The morphology and life history of Stylonema reniforme Kajimura (Stylonematales, Rhodophyta) from Japan were investigated and its taxonomic placement was discussed. This species has 6-30 discoid chloroplasts devoid of a pyrenoid in each cell. This is a typical feature of the genus Goniotrichopsis. The species reproduced only by monospores, which were formed by the direct transformation of the vegetative cells similar to the type species Goniotrichopsis sublittoralis Smith. Goniotrichopsis reniformis (Kajimura) Kikuchi comb. nov. was proposed. The asexual life history of the present species was completed in 3-10 weeks at 15-20°C in culture.

To advance seeding of conchospores of Porphyra dentata, P. seriata and P. tenera, the effect of light intensity on growth of shell-inhabiting conchocelis and formation and maturation of conchosporangia were studied from May to October in 1998. Growth of shell-inhabiting conchocelis of these species was similar to one another in early culture under natural light intensity, photoperiod and room temperature; growth of P. dentata and P. seriata was higher than that of P. tenera at 800 lux from August to September; growth of these three species was similar to one another at 800 lux in October. The color of shell-inhabiting conchocelis of P. dentata and P. seriata was red and the color of P. tenera black, but all the species were reddish-purple after mid-September. Formation rate of conchosporangia was 90% or more in P. tenera, 70% in P. seriata and less than 40% in P. dentata at September. Maturation of conchosporangia under 500 and 800 lux was better than 1,500 lux in the three species. Numbers of released conchospores was more at 18℃ than at 22℃, and the short-day treatment (8L:16D) gave rise to promotion of conchospore release. Numbers of conchospore germlings attached 1 ㎝ long netting-twine after 30 days of seeding were 35 individuals in P. tenera, 10 individuals in P. seriata and 3 individuals in P. dentata. Attached germlings of P. seriata were increased after 45 and 60 days; it suggests that monospores might be released in P. seriata.

Global warming affects critical natural resources, one of which is the oceans that occupy 70% of the total cover of the earth. In other words, ocean warming is a subset of global warming which needs to be addressed urgently. Purple laver (pyropia spp.) is one of the most vulnerable items to climate change although it is a major export product of Korean fisheries. The purpose of this study is to analyze the causality of how climate change caused by global warming affects the increase or decrease of PLP (purple laver production). The target area for analysis was set to Maro-hae between Jindo-gun and Haenam-gun. We selected marine environmental factors and meteorologic factors that could affect PLP as variables, as well as co-integration tests to determine long-term balance, and the Granger causticity tests. As a result, PLP and marine environmental factors WT (water temperature), pH, and DO confirmed that long-term equilibrium relationships were established, respectively. However, there is only causality with WT and it is confirmed that there is only a correlation between pH and DO (dissolved oxygen). There was no long-term equilibrium relationship between PLP and HDD (heating degree days) and there is a causal effect that HDD affects PLP; however, it was less clear than that of WT. The relationship between PLP and RF (rainfall), WS (wind speed), SS (percentage of sunshine), and FF (farm facilities) was all balanced in the long term, and causality exists. Based on the results of the analysis, policy proposals were made.

생리활성 기능을 갖고 있으면서 지구상에 cellulose 다음으로 많이 존재하는 탄수화물인 chitin으로부터 쉽게 얻을 수 있는 chitosan의 김양식에 대한 처리효과를 조사하였다. 패각사상체 배양에 있어 패각에 chitosan을 처리하였을 때 처리하지 않은 패각에 비해 사상체의 부착이 현저히 높았다. 또한 30 cps, 90 cps chitosan을 처리한 후 비교하였을 때 30 cps chitosan 처리구의 사상체 부착율이 높은것으로 나타나 chitosan 종류에 따라 그 효과가 다름을 알 수 있었다. 이 결과는 채묘시 망에 chitosan 처리를 함으로써 망에 김 부착율을 높이고 결과적으로 다른 잡조류의 부착율을 떨어뜨릴 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 한편 실내 실험에서 엽체 배양에 chitosan을 처리한 결과 30 cps chitosan 처리구가 101.2%, 90 cps chitosan 처리구가 92.1%의 무게증가율을 보인 반면 control는 72.9%로 30 cps chitosan 처리구가 90 cps chitosan 처리구보다 9.1%, control 보다 28.3%의 증가율을 보였으며 90 cps chitosan 처리구도 comtrol 보다 19.2% 증가 하였으며 chitosan을 처리했을 때가 control 보다 훨씬 부드럽고 윤기가 좋았다. 이 결과는 김양식 중에 chitosan을 처리함으로써 수확량 증가와 품질개선효과도 볼 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주고 있다. Chitosan are known to stimulate growth and defense responses of many land-plants. This led us to study whether chitosan affects laver, which is a sea-plant. Here we report that chitosan treatment affects the growth of laver (Porphyra) and attachment of conchocelis to the oyster shells. The oyster shells coated with 1% chitosan (74 kD molecular mass) showed higher attachment and growth of conchocelis compared to the non-treated oyster shells and the shells coated with 1% chitosan of 110 kD. During the cultivation of Porphyra in the laboratory, treatments of Porphyra with 0.1% chitosans of 74 kD and 110 kD showed increments of weight by 28.3% and 9.1 %, respectively, compared to the control (non-treated) Prophyra. Furthermore, chitosan-treated Porphyra appeared to be softer and brighter than control.

The random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of four sea cucumbers, Holothuria pardalis, H. monacaria, Stichopus japonicus and Cucumaria chronhjelmi from Geomun-do was performed. Ten primers of 10-mer arbitrary primer kit were used for PCR. Similarity was calculated by Jaccard’s equation. The band pattern was different in three of ten primers. The similarity between S. japonicus and C. chronhjelmi, H.pardalis and C. chronhjelmi, S. japonicus and H. monacaria, S. japonicus and H. pardalis, H. monacaria and C. chronhjelmi, and H. pardalis and H. monacaria was 0.42, 0.55, 0.63, 0.68 and 0.85, respectively.
