A methodology of selecting an optimal model is proposed for applying a SI method effectively. Instead of using a reduced finite element model, a reasonably detail finite element model is established first and then the model is identified by estimating its structural parameters. To satisfy the identifiability criterion, a parameter grouping scheme is applied to control the number of unknowns. Among the simulated member grouping cases, an optimal model is selected as the one with the minimal error. Some statistical criteria are introduced and their efficiencies in determining an optimal model are compared through simulation study. The proposed approach has been examined through simulation studies on a single span box-girder bridge.

The paper investigates the effectiveness of a frequency-domain SI(system identification) scheme on evaluating RC beams. Laboratory experiments were carried out with couple of RC beams reinforced by carbon fiber sheets or carbon fiber plates. The obtained results are discussed.

Baseline concepts and research outcomes associated with the developed safety inspection and maintenance manuals for pier-type port structures are summarized. Inspection procedure and the methodology of condition assessment are introduced for pier-type port structures. Differently from condition assessment on bridge structures, visual inspection is mainly applied for port structures. Through sample examples, the procedures of inspection and condition assessment are illustrated for each structural component, inspection unit, and for the whole structure.

A simple algorithm is proposed for computing dynamic displacements from measured dynamic strains. A beam theory is basically applied to relate the curvature and strain. Modal superposition using general coordinates are used to relate the curvature and displacement. Theoretical mode shapes of some of the lowest modes are used in the formulation. For the current study, only beam-type structures are tested. However, the idea may be easily extended to other types of structures.
