성인 발달장애인의 자기옹호 경험에 대한 질적 분석 -한국 피플 퍼스트 활동을 중심으로-

본 연구는 한국 피플 퍼스트 집단 활동을 중심으로 성인 발달장애인의 자기옹호 경험의 의미와 경험과정을 살펴보고자 Glaser의 근거이론방법을 적용하여 탐색하였고 이론적 표집방식에 근거하여 20명의 연구 참여자들을 심층면담 하였다. 개방코딩과 선택코딩을 통한 자료분석 결과, 136개의 개념과 70개의 하위범주, 22개의 범주가 도출되었다. 자기옹호경험의 중심현상은 ‘교류, 서로에게 힘이 되기’였으며, 핵심범주는 ‘널리 알려서 힘 갖기’로 나타났다. 연구결과, 한국 피플 퍼스트 집단 활동을 중심으로 한 성인 발달장애인의 자기옹호 경험의 의미는 피플 퍼스트를 널리 알려서 힘을 가짐으로써 피해자 지위에서 가치 있는 존재로서의 삶 재건하기로 나타났다. 이러한 자기옹호 경험은 개인수준에 근거한 자기옹호에서 집단수준에 근거한 자기옹호의 과정으로 나타났다. 그리고 본 연구결과에서 발달장애 자기옹호를 추동하는 주요한 속성으로는 관계, 주체성, 권리로 나타났다. 관계는 고립과 배제를 벗어난 사회적 통합을 의미하였고, 주체성은 시민으로서의 지위를 확보하는 것을 의미하였다. 권리는 ‘Inclusion, 평범한 인간으로’로 표현되었는데, 이는 삶에 요구되는 피플 퍼스트 지원체계에 대한 요청이자 시민권의 실현을 의미했다. This study explored the meaning and process of the self-advocacy experience for adults with learning difficulties, focusing on the activities of People First, through the Glaser’s Classic Grounded Theory. Based on Glaser’s theoretical sampling, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 20 subjects. The open coding and selective coding results showed 136 concepts, 70 sub-categories and 22 categories. The core phenomenon of self-advocacy was‘the mutual relationship: being supportive of each other’and the core category of the process was‘being widely-recognized and to be powerful.’ As a results, the meaning of experience of self-advocacy for adults with learning difficulties through Korean People First activities was to rebuild their lives as worthy being by making People First widely-recognized in the society and to be powerful. And experiences of self-advocacy have expanded from individual level to collective level. The study found that relationships, subjectivity, and rights were the main factors that led to the development of self-advocacy for adults with learning difficulties. Relationship meant social integration beyond isolation and exclusion, and subjectivity meant securing citizenship. Rights meant the realization of civil rights and a call for People First support system, which is required in life for‘Inclusion, Being Ordinary.’
