Purpose: This study was done to develop and evaluate multilingual education materials to promote health and adaptationto pregnancy for immigrant women in Korea. Methods: This study had three procedures: First, contents of theeducation materials were developed according to pregnant women’s needs, literature reviews, and group discussion. Details in contents were constructed based on Roy‘s adaptation model; Second, validity verification and translationof education materials were accomplished; Third, evaluation of the education materials was done through a surveyof immigrant women. Results: The education materials were developed in six languages (Korean, English, Chinese,Vietnamese, Filipino, and Cambodian). The title is "Healthy mother, happy family: eight-step guide to a healthy pregnancy". It was composed of an eight-step guide to healthy pregnancy, self-examination check list, websites for childbirtheducation and information, and guidelines on education materials in a brochure. In the evaluation, the averageresponse score for the questionnaire items was high (3.23 on a four-point Likert scale). The average score for Cambodianimmigrants was the highest of all immigrant women. Conclusion: Multilingual education materials developedin this research will help community health nurses to manage pregnancies for immigrant women and will be usefulfor health education for these women.

Purpose: The study investigated the relationship of health behavior with bone mineral density (BMD) for college students. Methods: A descriptive study was done using a convenient sampling of college students (n=116) enrolled in a health-related department. Height, weight, body mass index (BMI), health behaviors recognition of subjective health, smoking, drinking, exercise, food habits, intake of calcium, and family history of fracture were measured. BMD was measured at the right forearm using Hologic lunar duel-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA and multiple linear regression. Results: The prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis was 41.4% and 22.4%, respectively. Significant relationships were observed between BMD of right forearm and gender, BMI, subjective health recognition, drinking, and exercise (p<.05). Results of linear regression after adjusted BMD were increased concerning subjective health recognition and regular exercise (p<.05). Conclusions: Subjective health recognition and exercise carries positive effects on BMD. We recommend for college students that healthy behaviors like proper weight, smoking cessation, regular exercise, regular food habits, and health awareness are helpful to BMD.

Purpose: The study attempt to consider whether xylitol and sorbitol influences on oral health and relieved xerostomia in the Elderly. Method: This is a quasi-experimental study based on the pre-test/post-test experimental design. July to August 2003, 10 subjects in the xylitol group had 5.2gm of xylitol a day by chewing, and 9 subjects in the sorbitol group also had 5.3gm of sorbitol a day by chewing. Control group had no treatment. Collected data were analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA using the SPSS program. Result: As time proceeds, no significant difference was found in the oral health index and xerostomia among the three groups. However within the xylitol and sorbitol treatment groups. Xylitol group showed a significant change in the saliva flow rate, pH, total protein concentrations, and immunoglobulin levels, and xerostomia as time proceeds. Sorbitol group showed a significant change in all the indexes. Conclusion: Chewing of the gums containing xylitol or sorbitol increased saliva secretion, caused pH buffer effect of saliva, and elevated the total protein and immunoglobulin levels. This result has a significance beyond a mere increase of saliva flow rate in terms of the prevention of infection by increasing antibacterial ingredients.

Objective : The aim of the present study was to investigate the subjective health, drinking motives and drinking problems in young adults. Materials and Methods : The Data were collected through the structured questionnaire that including general characteristics, subjective health, four drinking motives and drinking problems survey targeting the 299 young adults from April 2002 to May 2002. In the first place, the present study tested a four-factor model of drinking motives recently proposed by Cox and Klinger (1988, 1990). Results : The prevalence of drinking problems was 36.5%, obstainers comparised 63.5% of the sample. Hazardous drinkers represented 26.4% and alcohol dependence 3.7% of the drinking problems. Through the multiple regression analyses, the effects of subjective health, drinking motives on drinking problems were examined. Results showed that drinking motives were found to have significant effects on drinking problems. Conformity motives, enhancement motives, social motives, coping motives, for example, influenced upon drinking problems indirectly through alcohol use, It was particularly noted that conformity motives, enhancement motives, coping motives and social motives were the strongest predictor in explaining the Hazardous drinking and alcohol dependence of drinking problems. While subjective health had only adjusted on drinking problems. Conclusions : In conclusion, the present study could work as a stepping stone for guiding the directions of further research. So efforts to prevent drinking problems in young adults can take many different drinking motives.

Objective changes of pelvic muscle contraction force were measured by perineometer. Results. Pre and post treatment maximal pelvic floor muscle contractile pressure(PMC pressure) showed statistically significant differences (p=0.012). When measured by the questionnaire, pre and post treatment changes in the severity of urinary incontinence and discomfort due to incontinence showed significant differences. The level of discomfort in daily life, social activity, physical activity, personal relations and discomfort due to urinary symptoms has largely changed.
