Vol.9 No.-
Bunyan considered "Justification only through the righteousness of Christ" more important than anyone else. For him, the doctrine of justification was not mere theoretical knowledge but a living truth that derived from his own painful experiences. Therefore, he could neither withstand a compromise on the doctrine of justification nor see it being distorted or destroyed in any way. The debate with Burrough and Fowler over justification took place on this background. In this debate, a big error with Burrough was his accepting humane elements such as ``conscience`` and ``a subjective image of Jesus`` as a basis for justification rather than Jesus`` historical works of salvation. A problem with Fowler was his treating Christ not as a savior but as an ethical teacher. The reason that Baxter condemned Bunyan as an Antinomian came from their disagreement on the conditions for justification. Whereas Bunyan held only onto the righteousness of Christ, Baxter had a wrong notion in which the ultimate justification is accomplished with a combination of the works of Christ and the works of man. Although all of the three people, Burrough, Fowler and Baxter, seemed to argue with a different theory, they were identical in the way they denied justification only through the righteousness of Christ and tried to combine the works of man with the righteousness of Christ as conditions for justification. For Bunyan, who had gone through long frustration and agony due to his reliance on man``s good works in his early years, it was not acceptable to make a compromise on conditions for justification. It is inappropriate to call Bunyan an antinomian. There was a considerable difference between his beliefs and the beliefs of Antinomians on justification and sanctification, faith and good works, and the role of the law. Bunyan could distinguish between sanctification and justification and he emphasized the need for holy life in Christians`` lives. On the other hand, Antinomians lost the need and the true meaning of justification and sanctification by combining them together. In terms of relationship between faith and good works, Bunyan found it impossible to ignore piety in a Christian``s life who obtained faith through justification. To Bunyan, the law was not the means of redemption but the norms for life of a Christian who has been redeemed. We can see that Bunyan stands firmly on the reformed theology. Also, his doctrine that says "only Christ" and "Justification onlythrough the righteousness of Christ" is an important doctrine that Korean churches of today should remember. It is a vital truth that teaches the identity and the missions of Christianity.
