자살은 우리나라의 주요 사망원인이고 빠르게 증가하고 있어, 의학적 견지에서 체계적이고 적극적으로 대처해야 한다. 본 논문에서는 자살에 대한 태도와 자살 관련행동 그리고 우울증에 대해 조사하여 이들의 관련성을 비교하였다. 과거자살관련행동은 현재의 우울증상과 밀접한 관련을 나타냈고, 현재 자살생각이 빈번할수록 우울증상이 심하였다. 특히 과거 자살시도경험이 있는 경우 현재도 자살생각을 갖는 경우가 유의하게 많았지만, 자살시도 후 정신의학적 치료를 받지 않은 경우가 적지 않았고 자살생각이 빈번한 사람들이 오히려 치료에 대해 부정적이었다. 또한 자살에 대해 허용적 태도를 갖는 경우 자살생각이 빈번한 것으로 나타나 자살에 대한 태도와 가치관을 바꿀 수 있는 교육과 계몽을 펼쳐가는 것이 자살 예방을 위해 필요할 것이다. 무엇보다도 자살시도를 한 사람들에게 적극적인 정신의학적 치료를 즉시 제공하고, 이들의 우울증상을 적극적으로 치료하는 것이 자살 예방을 위해 필요하다. Objectives: In Korea, the incidence of suicide has increased rapidly and has become the fifth leading cause of death. Therefore, an appropriate systematic psychiatric approach is essential. Methods: We investigated suicide-related behaviors such as thinking about, planning, and attempting suicide, 11 items of questionnaire about attitudes toward suicide, and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI). A total of 613 people participated in this survey. Results: People who had experienced suicidal behavior showed significantly high BDI scores. The more frequently individuals had suicidal ideas, the higher was their BDI scores. Moreover, those who had attempted suicide were those who had significantly more frequent current ideas of suicide. Up to half of the people surveyed who had attempted suicide were not receiving treatment at that time. In addition, individuals who frequently thought of suicide also had negative attitudes toward treatment for suicidal behaviors. Furthermore, people who had permissive attitudes toward suicide had significantly more frequent current suicidal ideas. Conclusion: Public education and a campaign aimed at understanding attitudes toward, and expanding knowledge of, suicide are warranted for suicide prevention. Most of all, psychiatric treatment should be given promptly to those who attempt suicide; additionally, active treatment for depression will be very important in reducing suicide rates.
