Currently, in Korea, all lengths are written in “meter” unit, and the non-statutory measuring units are banned for use. However, in some fields, traditional measuring units are widely used with necessary modifications, and people in such fields raise varying arguments on conversion to “meter” unit. This research examines traditional measuring units from historical and cultural viewpoints, and provides suggestions on how to improve consistency and standardization for more accurate and effective exchange of scientific opinions.

The paper proposes a rehabilitation program for hand-paralyzed patients using Attitude & Heading Reference System (AHRS) and muscle signal activity from the patient’s electromyogram. Unlike current rehabilitation programs using mechanical devices, this program not only helps the patients practice rehabilitation themselves using digital media, but also reflects the magnitude of the force under overloaded environment according to the stiffness of the muscle signal. The paper suggests the structure, shape, and realization of the program and evaluates the practicality of the MATLAB based program through simple applications and experiments.

Understanding the present condition of Oriental traditional medicine in different country is demanded for the Korean Traditional Medicine to prepare his orientation in future. Also it is not possible to separate the present condition of OTM from history of oriental medicine as a whole. This is valid for the introduction of TCM in the west. The first information have arrived in Europe by the terrestrial and maritime travelers accounts. The diplomatic way, with special reference to Jesuit fathers, has brought cultural and theoretical precise data. The physicians of East India Company and, later, of expeditionary forces, have supplied with practical data. Five periods follow one another: 1) Period when the source reached and are used in Europe. This first step is intimately involved with the use and comparaison of similar factor between the two medical systems ; 2) “Discovery” and use of needles ; 3) latent period when tehniques coming from acupuncture source were developed ; 4) “Chinese Acupunture” correctly speaking ; 5) modern period or investigating period, when Eastern and Western people are trying to correlate data of traditional medicine with those of western science. In particular the actual situation from 2000.

Objective: Much has been known that the systematical theory of acupuncture was developed from stone needle as therapeutic tools for orthopedic diseases in ancient times. Stone needle is very old therapeutic method like moxibustion and has been recognized that it was developed since the Stone Age in China so far. In the present study, it was examined for the origination and formation of stone needle based on stone relics of the Stone Age in Korean Peninsular, the medical and geographical literatures. Materials and methods: The facts of stone needle was examined and arranged on the ancient medical or geographical literatures such as The Yellow Emperor's Canon Internal Medicine, Shanhaijing as an ancient geographical book, etc. The clan societies and family related to an origination of stone needle was chased together with their cultural characteristics and origination. The stone relics which have been digged out of historic sites in the North-East Asia were examined for a relevance to stone needle. Results: In The Yellow Emperor's Canon Internal Medicine, it was referred to the stone needle that originated from a fishery zone related to the east coast district in North-East Asia. Through the examination of Shan Hai Jing as an ancient geographical book and its historical reviews, a Go-yi clan society who keep Go's family tree dealt well with the stone needle and jewels including jade in the North-East Asia before the publication periods of The Yellow Emperor's Canon Internal Medicine, and is comprised in the culture of Dong-yi clan society but not the Chinese culture. The obsidian stones, which have been digged out of historical sites in the North-East Asia since the Stone Age, are originated from volcanic areas combined with seashore that seems to be Baekdu mountain district in Korea and Kyushu district in Japan. Furthermore, obsidian stone tools which were found out at Laodung peninsula and the Korean peninsula are archeologically similar to the stone needle with regards to the shape, size and dual-use. In addition, specific obsidian stone tools have been used in orthopedic surgery as well-crafted obsidian blades have a cutting edge up to five times sharper than high-quality steel surgical scalpels. Conclusion: The origin of obsidian stone needle is well corresponded to the explanation about that of the stone needle. It is suggested that the stone needle which influenced in completion of acupuncture and Meridian theory in China seems to be an obsidian stone, and distribution of obsidian stone needle has been closely connected to Dong-yi clan society which are lived in the North-East Asia including Baekdu-mountain district.

With the decrease in the number of workers in the domestic agricultural population and the rapid aging of the population, the need for technology that minimizes the risk of disease and enables efficient work is emerging in agricultural sites. Robot technologies and devices for preventing and treating diseases of workers or patients are being developed in industrial and medical fields, but there is a limit to their application to agricultural work in which atypical work is mixed. In addition, considering that most of the agricultural population is elderly and female, it is essential to develop wearable suits that can experience muscle assistance effects with comfortable fit in various movements. In this paper, we developed a wearable suit system that considers wearability and weight as a muscle strength aid. And in order to evaluate the characteristics of the developed product, the performance is verified by measuring the degree of muscle fatigue through EMG tests.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to observe effects of manual acupuncture (MA), electro-acupuncture (EA) and moxibustion (MO) on the rat with loperamide-induced constipation. Methods: This study measured small intestinal motility and number of fecal pellets in rats with loperamide induced constipation. MA and EA (intensity, 5 times muscle twitch threshold) was applied for 30 minutes and MO was treated on 5 times moxa cautery to the groups divided with age and sex. Results: The small intestinal motility was decreased by ST36 EA and ST37 EA in 5 weeks male group and ST37 EA in 7 weeks male and female groups, and ST36 MO in 7 weeks female group, but it was increased by ST39 EA in 7 weeks male group and ST37 MO and ST39 MO in 7 weeks male group. The number of fecal pellets was decreased by MA, EA, MO of ST36 in all group except 5, 7 weeks male groups only, and MA, EA of ST37 in 5, 7 weeks male group and ST37 MO in 7 weeks female group, and ST39 EA in 5 weeks male group and 7 weeks female group and ST39 MO in 7 weeks female group, but increased by ST37 EA in 5 weeks female group and ST39 EA in 7 weeks male group. Conclusions: Although these differences do not have a established tendency, it suggests that acupuncture and moxibustion are experimentally dependent upon the sex and age on intestinal motility in rats.

Because there are few constraints on the structure design of a product in manufacturing, additive manufacturing technology aids to the simplification of many manufacturing processes in numerous industries. In instance, as compared to traditional cutting, casting, and clay modeling, it is able to produce prototype models relatively rapidly and simply. This is especially useful when employing additive manufacturing technologies to create robots or wearable platforms with complex shapes and many considerations. This article presents an application case for a wired power transmission type wearable suit system for a single actuator, with the assumption that it will be created using additive manufacturing technology to address issues with existing agricultural wearable robots.
