This study was investigated to statolith morphology, and examined applicability of the morphology to taxonomy the six Korean cephalopod species. The cephalopods used in the study were caught on the southern coast of Korea, and after transfer to the laboratory, statolith was extracted and observed. Observation results showed that the component parts of statolith were different between Octopoda and Decapoda consequently, it was possible to distinguish between Octopoda and Decapoda based on the statolith morphology. In Octopoda, the shape and location of the tip of the wing could be used as the taxonomic character. In Decapoda, Lateral dome and dorsal dome could be used for the taxonomic character. These morphological differences of statoliths are thought to be related to the ecology of each species.

The diet composition of john dory Zeus faber, was investigated using 266 specimens collected in the coastal waters of the South Sea, Korea. The specimens ranged in total length (TL) from 12.5 to 43.2 cm. The Z. faber fed mainly on Pisces and less often on Macrura. We further analyzed the data by dividing the specimens into five classes (<15.0 cm, 15.0-20.0 cm, 20.0-25.0 cm, 25.0-30.0 cm, ≥30.0 cm). The Z. faber diet shifted with size class from predominantly consuming Macrura to Pisces. The proportion of Macrura consumed decreased with increasing body size, whereas the consumption of Pisces increased gradually.

The age and growth of butter clams Saxidomus purpuratus were estimated using transmitted light on the shells of 364 samples from January 2017 to December 2017 in Jinhae Bay. Based on monthly variation in the marginal index (MI) of the shell, it is assumed that rings are formed once a year during the period from July to August in this species. The relationship between shell length (SL; mm) and shell height (SH; mm) was expressed by the equation SH=0.8053SL-2.9636 (R2=0.94) and between SL and shell width (SW; mm) by the equation SW=0.5648SL-3.7105 (R2=0.90). The relationship between SL and total weight (TW; g) was expressed by the following equation: TW=0.00009SL3.2141 (R2=0.96). von Bertalanffy’s growth parameters were estimated using the regression wizard in the SigmaPlot computer program (Systat Software, Inc., v. 10.0). The maximum shell length (SL∞) was 126.16 mm, growth rate was 0.2030/year, theoretical age at shell length 0 (t0) was -0.52 years, and asymptotic total weight (TW∞) was 509.17 g. Growth curves for SL and TW fitted to the von Bertalanffy’s equation were expressed as follows: SLt = 126.16(1-e-0.2030(t+0.52)), TWt=509.17(1-e-0.2030(t+0.52))3.2141.

The reproductive biology of largehead hairtail Trichiurus japonicus, from near Jeju Island, Korea was investigated based on 4,384 individuals collected by commercial vessel from November 2016 to October 2019. There were more female specimens than male specimens (2.64:1). T. japonicus preanal lengths (PL) ranged from 10.5 to 53.5 cm; the relationships between PL and body weight (BW) were BW=0.0103PL3.1293 for females and BW=0.0106PL3.1251 for males. Monthly changes in gonadosomatic index were analyzed to estimate spawning season. The spawning period ranged from June to November. The size-frequency distribution of eggs suggested that T. japonicus exhibits multiple-spawning during a spawning period. The minimum size of females at maturity was 18.2 cm, while the size at sexual maturity was 25.0 cm.

We investigated regional differences in the growth and maturation rate of Pacific cod in the East and Yellow Seas. Significant regional differences were detected in the von Bertalanffy growth equation and mean length at maturity (L50). Cod in the East Sea grew at a faster rate than those in the Yellow Sea, with females growing faster than males in both populations. Cod of both sexes matured earlier in the Yellow Sea (age of maturity: 2.3 years for males, 2.6 years for females) than in the East Sea (age of maturity: 3.9 years for males, 4 years for females). These regional differences suggest that Pacific cod in the Yellow Sea, which is at the southwestern extremity of global cod distribution and thus likely to be an inhospitable habitat for this species, have adapted to their environment by developing earlier maturation and slower growth than cod in the East Sea or the Korea Strait. These regional differences must be taken into account when setting biological reference points for management of the Pacific cod fishery in Korean waters.
남해 서부해역 저수온수 출현에 따른 진도 연안 낭장망에 채집된어류 군집구조 변화

We examined the community structure of fish off the coast of Jindo Island in response to a cold water appearance in the southwestern sea of Korea each August between 2013-2015. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 31 taxa during the study period, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. Collichthys lucidus and Neosalanx andersoni, which are mainly distributed in the western sea of Korea, increased in abundance and were dominant in August 2013, possibly due to the apparent intrusion of cold water (< 19°C) from offshore into the coastal waters of Jindo Island. Meanwhile, Scomberomorus niphonius and Sardinella zunasi, which are known as warmwater migratory species, increased in abundance and were dominant in August 2015, likely influenced by the warmer water (> 20°C) at the coast, which resulted in a noticeable lessening of the cold water in the study area. However, no significant differences were observed in fish community structure in the month of August between 2013 1015. This implies that the small-scale spatial and temporal variations in the cold water had limited effects on the fish community structure, even though the abundances of several dominant species varied in the coastal waters

We aimed to study the structure of the zooplankton community in the Southern Sea of the Republic of Korea. Zooplankton samples were collected in February (winter), May (spring), August (summer), and November (autumn) of 2020. The zooplankton collected belonged to a total of 166 taxa and 12 phyla, including some unidentified individuals and those from upper taxa. The number of taxa collected were the highest in winter at 117, and the lowest in May at 93. The dominant taxa were Oikopleura spp. in the winter, Gastropoda larvae in the spring, and Paracalanus parvus s.l. in the summer and autumn. The community structure of the zooplankton was clearly distinguishable between the seasons. The mean density of zooplankton was the highest in autumn and the lowest in summer (576,039 and 313,000 individuals/1,000 m3, respectively). Based on the analysis of relationships between the density of the six major taxa and environmental factors, a significant correlation (P<0.05) between the four taxa and environmental factors was found. Therefore, in order to understand changes in the zooplankton community, quantitative and qualitative investigations of biological factors as well as physical factors should be conducted.

We examined the comparative spawning ecology of daggertooth pike conger Mureanesox cinereus and common pike conger M. bagio in the South Sea of Korea from May 2018 to December 2019. In the South Sea of Korea, the mean total length (TL) of M. cinereus was significantly smaller than that of M. bagio. The sex ratios of both species were skewed toward females. The spawning period of M. cinereus was from June to October, while the spawning period of M. bagio was from August to October. The lengths at 50%, 75%, and 97.5% sexual maturity of M. cinereus females were estimated as 54.6 cm, 60.4 cm, and 74.1 cm TL, respectively. It was not possible to estimate lengths at sexual maturity for M. bagio in the South Sea of Korea due to the absence of immature stages.
