The effluence of veterinary antibiotics to the environment is of concern as it has potential risks such as development of antibiotics resistance bacteria requiring an efficient technology to eliminate the antibiotics in the environment. Therefore, the current study was carried out to examine the ability of zerovalent iron (ZVI) on degradation of the antibiotics (three tetracyclines; tetracycline, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline and three sulfonamides; sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole) in water. For this, 5 mg L-1 of each antibiotic solution was treated with ZVI at two different concentrations (2% and 5%) and then the residual concentrations of the antibiotics in solution were measured as time goes. It was appeared that most tetracyclines (>99%) were degraded within 0.5 min at both ZVI treatment levels and also most sulfonamides (>99%) were degraded with ZVI treatment even though the degradation time for sulfonamides was longer than that for tetracyclines. The half life of sulfonamides degradation was in a range of 2.68-3.43 min.
