Vol.34 No.1

Raymond, who adopted Le Corbusier"s Errazuris House Project, built Karuizawa Villa by incorporating Japan"s aspiration for Western modern architecture and strong convictions regarding the preservation of traditional culture heritage, which were prevalent in Japan at the time. Despite the controversy over his plagiarism, Karuizawa Villa shows several unique architectural characteristics. First, in terms of the arrangement and access system, the villa has a common space that affords a view of the lake by accessing from the mountain side. Second, in terms of spatial composition, the common space is connected to the mesonnette by placing a trail to enable enjoyment of natural scenery. In particular, personal space is planned in the shape of a cross by connecting several surfaces to the outside in order to secure enjoyment of the natural environment. Lastly, in the aspect of structure and materials, both architectural buildings adopted masonry by using natural stone as well as building materials suitable for each region and climate by using logs in constructing the main columns and beams. Through Karuizawa Villa, Raymond is considered to have established his own style by combining the standard of Western modern architecture and the elements of Japanese traditional architecture while valuing local architectural technology.

Vol.24 No.2

This study is conducted to investigate the early architectural concept of block unit housing based on Walter Gropius' social view and experimental spirit, which greatly affected the housing condition of low-income urban dwellers during the post- World War I. By analyzing 8 cases of block unit housing from Walter Gropius‘ architectural point of view, the structure is classified largely into 3 types: Basic type, Overlapping type, and Extension type. This classification will lead to the mass production of architectural materials as well as the rationalization of the dry construction method, and it eventually lead to an improved living condition and cost savings. The results of the analysis can be summarized as follows: 1) In response to a shortage of affordable housing for low-income urban dwellers after World War I, the standardization of housing types was introduced, and a prefabricated method was developed in order to mass-produce houses at low cost; 2) Also, a teamwork method, which combines the art work of architect and the financial support of enterprises, was introduced; 3) Even though the structure of block unit housing was classified into the 3 types, various styles were explored to avoid uniformity; and 4) In the block unit housing, standardization does not simply imply the mass production of standardized products, but it also means the possibility of various transformation. Since the 1990s, experiments with the housing units of LV home, Micro Compact Home, and Spacebox could develop various styles of housing units with the help of advanced architectural technology and production methods. However, more studies should be conducted on Gropius' block unit housing and architectural practice to establish a foundation for various styles of block unit housing.

Vol.27 No.8

Harumi Apartments are Japan’s first high-rise housing built by the Japanese Housing Corporation. It has high historical value in that it was an experimental housing prototype with purposes of reducing construction costs, exploring technical solutions for the construction of high-rise apartments, and examining the possibility of introducing collective housing as a form of urban residence in Japan. Since then, Harumi apartments have contributed to the expansion of collective housing. They also have historical significance in the architects of the twentieth century. This research analyzed Kunio Maekawa’s Hrumi Apartments (1958) that played an important role in establishing collective housing in Japan, and investigated the characteristics of Hrumi high-rise apartments that provided a turning point in Japanese modern architecture. It also conducted a comparative analysis between Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation (1952) and Hrumi Apartments to examine differences and similarities in their design and to find out how Western modern architecture has affected Japanese architecture. In particular, this study attempted to understand an architectural relationship between Kunio Maekawa and Le Corbusier based on previous studies on Unite d’Habitation. A literature review and an analysis of related data were conducted to investigate a design background and characteristics of Harumi Apartments and to examine Le Corbusier’s influence on Harumi Apartments.

Vol.28 No.5

This study investigates the early-period detached houses built by three Japanese followers of Le Corbusier. It shows the origin and essence of architecture by the three Japanese followers, who adhered to the principle of modern architecture and attempted to realize it in Japan. First of all, the characteristics of detached houses can be found from the traces of direct communion with Le Corbusier in the relationship with modern architecture. By adopting modern architecture, Kunio Maekawa and Junzo Sakakura also created a modern wooden house structure unique to Japan. Next, in the process of modernization, the adoption of Japanese building techniques and establishment of identity revealed the following characteristics: ① active acceptance of the design features of traditional houses; ② application of Japanese traditional window and door compositions to wooden structures through modern interpretations; and ③ harmonious composition of Western standing-style space and Japanese floor mat-style space. To incorporate Western modern architecture into Japanese detached houses, the three Japanese followers learned the principle of modern architecture from Le Corbusier, the best modern architect in contemporary times. Nonetheless, the integration of Japanese building techniques and modern architecture gave rise to unique architectural characteristics but still maintains contemporary features.

Vol.25 No.1

In this study, the role of Walter Gropius and the concept of ‘block unit’ are investigated by reviewing 6 cases, which are obtained from a literature review and an onsite survey of housing constructed during the advent and development of modern housing. The structures of the 'block unit' housing of Walter Gropius can be classified largely into 3 types: Basic type, Reiterate type, and Extension type. These structures were found to be presented as the combined styles , such as the low-rise reiterate housing, the mid-to-high rise flat-type housing, and the expansion style housing. The cases of block unit housing were analyzed, and the results are summarized as follows: 1) In response to the desperate need for low-income housing after World war, a method of mass producing the housing units at low cost was invented by standardizing housing types. 2) Even if the structures of ‘block unit’ housing can be classified into the above 3 types, variations of the types were explored to avoid uniformity. 3) In the case of the low-rise reiterate type housing, the advantages of the single detached housing and the complex housing as well as those of the urban style and the rural style were pursued. In the case of the mid-to-high rise flat-type housing, which repeats the basic block unit, the demand for the mass-produced housing at the time was apparent. Due to his design of the flat-type high-rise housing, Walter Gropius has been criticized as a culprit architect who created an urban space which has non-characteristic appearances and creates anonymous and dehumanizing atmosphere. However, his design intent should be re-evaluated in the context of housing problems of the time.
