This study`s aim is to isolate and characterize plant growth promoting Enterobacter species for the biological control of gray leaf spot in pepper. Screening was carried out from the rhizosphere of Agropyron tsukushiensi var. transiens (Hack.) Ohwi in Dok-do. Rhizobacterial isolates were partially identified by 16S rDNA sequencing and Enterobacter species were tested for plant growth promoting capabilities and the induction of systemic resistance in pepper against gray leaf spot caused by Stemphylium solani. Isolates were tested for production of indole-acetic acid and siderophore, and for phosphate solubilization. The application of isolates was effective in controlling gray leaf spot in pepper with E. asburiae (KNUC5007) and E. cancerogenes (KNUC5008 and KNUC5010) having the highest efficacy in reducing gray leaf spot severity. This is the first report of the biological control of gray leaf spot in pepper using rhizobacteria and it is hoped that this study will increase the utilization of Enterobacter species as plant growth promoters and biocontrol agents.

Background: The clinical significance of the apolipoprotein E (Apo E) ε4 allele in vascular dementia (VaD) has been a subject of debate. VaD is the most common subtype of dementia in Korean population. Apo E allele frequencies were evaluated in Korean patients with VaD diagnosed by the Erkinjuntti criteria of subcortical vascular dementia and mini-mental-state examination(MMSE) in this study Methods: Forty patients participated in the study. 20 patients with VaD and 20 controls with no risk factors for stroke who had absolutely normal brain MRI findings The Apo E genotype was determined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and allele specific hybridization using the Apo E typing test kit Results: The Apo E ε4 allele frequency in the VaD group was 20% and was not significantly different from those of normal controls (15%) The severity of dementia assessed by K-MMSE was not different between the VaD patients with Apo E ε4 allele and the VaD patients without Apo E ε4 allele Conclusions: These results did not show neither increased frequency of Apo E ε4 allele in Korean VaD patients, nor any differences in trends compared to control subjects.
GPS(Glycidoxypropyl Trimethoxysilane)을 이용한 친수성 코팅 필름의 제조

고분자 필름의 무적성을 향상시키기 위하여 우수한 친수성 및 높은 가시광선 투과율을 보이는 유기-무기 혼성 코팅용액을 졸-겔법으로 합성하였다. 코팅용액은 입자 직경이 15㎚ 크기의 무기물인 콜로이드 실리카 용액(Ludox)에 유기 조성을 함유한 화합물인 GPS을 첨가하여 제조되었다. 실란 커플링제인 GPS는 콜로이드 실리카와 주변의 매트릭스(matrix)인 고분자 필름에 각각 강한 결합을 형성하여 두 개의 서로 다른 물질을 강하게 연결하는 결합제 역할을 한다. 강산성 조건 하에서 제조된 혼성 코팅용액으로 고분자 필름 위에 코팅한 경우는 코팅필름의 표면이 거의 균열이 없는 매끈한 미세구조를 보이는 반면, 약산과 염기성 조건 하에서 제조된 혼성 코팅용액으로 코팅한 경우에는 균열이 심한 미세구조를 보였다. 또한 pH 2의 산성 조건에서 제조한 필름은 우수한 친수성 및 높은 가시광선 투과율을 보인 반면, 염기성 조건으로 제조한 코팅필름은 친수성이 좋지 않았으며, 낮은 가시광선 투과율을 보였다. In order to improve the anti-fogging property of polymer films, organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions which have good hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPS) to a colloidal silica(15㎚) suspension(Ludox). GPS as silane coupling agent forms strong bonds to the colloidal silica and surrounding polymer matrix and links two different materials together. Solutions prepared by addition of GPS at the acidic condition resulted in coatings that were less prone to cracking, while those at the basic condition caused coatings with more cracking. These resulted in better hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light for the solution prepared at the acidic condition(pH 2). Compared with coatings under acidic conditions, coatings prepared at basic conditions showed worse hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light.
