This study was conducted to investigate effects of dietary recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) to moist pellet (MP) diet on growth and body composition of olive flounder (Paralichtys olivaceus). Experimental fish (average body weight:25 g) were divided into 4 groups, and each group was fed MP (raw fish and commercial compound meal was 7:3) with rBST addition levels 0, 2, 4 and 6 ppm/㎏ for 8 weeks. The growth and feed efficiency of the rBST addition groups was significantly higher than that of the control group (P〈0.05), and there were no significant difference with the rBST addition levels. Moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and crude ash content of whole body and liver in olive flounder were not significantly different between experimental groups. But crude lipid content of dorsal muscle and viscera of rBST addition groups were significantly lower than that of the control group. HSI (hepatosomatic index), VSI (visceralsomatic index), CF (condition factor), Ht (hematocrit) and Hb (hemoglobin) were not significantly different between experimental groups. The results indicate that the addition of 2 ppm/㎏ MP diet can improve growth and feed efficiency.

The 10-week feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimum dietary protein level of spotted sea bass (Lateolarbrax maculatus). Two replicate groups of fish initially averaging body weight 7.7g were fed the five commercial extruded pellet diets containing different protein level from 30, 40, 45, 50 and Taiwan product 50% (50T). Weight gain was the highest in the 50T group, and the lowest in the 30% protein level. Feed efficiency tended to increase with increase of dietary protein level, but decreased in 50% group. Protein efficiency ratio was decreased with increase of dietary protein level, but there were no significantly difference among experimental groups. There were no significantly difference among experimental groups in whole body moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and crude ash contents. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) and visceralsomatic index (VSI) of the fish fed 50T was significantly higher than the others groups. But there were no significantly differences among experimental groups in condition factor. For gastric evacuation rate (PER), all feed were emptied from the stomach and intestine in the 50T group on the 24th hours. Posterior intestine feed were not emptied in the 30% group, and little feed remained from stomach and intestine in 45% group on the 24th hours. But much feed were not emptied from stomach and intestine in 40% and 50% group on the 24th hours. Results from this study suggest that a 45% protein level could be recommended for the optimum protein level of juvenile spotted sea bass, Lateolabrax maculatus.

We investigated a nematode infection in the epithelial tissue of rockfish Sebastes schlegeli cultured in Cheonsu Bay, western Korea, from May 2013 to April 2014. Nematodes infected the epithelial tissues of various external organs, including the fins, operculum, nares, mouth, and head. Over a 1-year period, the overall nematode infection rate in rockfish was 55% (n=89/163): 56.7% (n=17/30) in May 2013, 88% (n=29/33) in August 2013, 0% (n=0/30) in October 2013, 70% (n=21/30) in January 2014, and 55% (n=22/40) in April 2014. During this study, the only massmortality of cultured rockfish in Cheonsu Bay was in August 2013, when we identified skin wounds on the rockfish caused by the nematodes escaping from their hosts. During this period, the accumulated mortality for 2 weeks was1.4-22.4% in different farms. In addition, several pathogenic bacteria (Photo bacterium damselae, Vibrio spp., and Streptococcus iniae) were isolated from the moribund rockfish; these were thought to be transmitted through the skin wounds caused by the nematodes.
