Insulation failure in power cables generally has several main causes, including corrosive vapors, excessive heat and moisture, electrical stress, mechanical damage, chemical problems, and natural deterioration due to aging. Insulation failure can generate problems ranging from short circuits, and fault current and fires to fatal accidents and personal injury. Thus, the insulation of cable is very important for reliable power system operation. The focus of this paper is the degradation of insulation resistance in TFR(Tray Frame Retardant) and VCTF(Light PVC Sheathed Circular Cord) cables in response to temperature variations. The insulation resistances were measured with a Megger insulation tester(S1-1568), an infrared radiation heater, and a data acquisition system. The insulation resistances showed sudden decreases in response to increasing temperature because of pyrolysis and thermal deformation occurring in the cable at temperature above room temperature.
