The edible periods of kimchi containing 2% CSP in kimchi by investigating pH and acidity were after 30 days. CSP in kimchi showed strong neutralization action and buffer action after 25 days during fermentation. The 98% neutralization action of 4% CSP in 1.5% lactic acid solution for 10 days was observed.
Lycopersicum esculentum 'cherry tomato'의 葯培養에 관한 硏究
鄭海駿,李永馥 培材大學校 1984 論文集 Vol.5 No.-
Anthers at the stage of uninucleate microspore of Lycopersicum esculentum 'cherry tomato' were cultured on the Murashige and Skoog's medium suppllemented with NAA and BA. Most of the binucleate microspores were equationally divided whereas the unequational division was relatively rare. The two nuclei formed were again divided into multinuclei, which were further developed into calli. After one month of culture, calli there formed on the MS medium containing BA 2mg/l and NAA 0.25mg/l. Shoot of embryoid-like body was not formed from the calli after subculture on the medium with reduced amounts of auxins.

Dietary Lactose as a Potential Risk Factor for Coronary Heart Disease and Ovarian Cancer
Yeong Ran Jeong, Yoon-Bok Lee 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2012 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.13 No.2
Lactose is a disaccharide consisting of a glucose and a galactose. Milk is a sole source of lactose in natural food. Lactase hydrolyzes lactose into glucose and galactose, which are absorbed in the intestine and utilized by the body. After weaning, lactase activity declines. Therefore, the majority of adults have hypolactasia. The prevalence is above 50% in South America, Africa, and Asia. A significant amount of lactose is consumed as cow milk-based food products. However, it has no special nutritional importance for adults, and it is suspected as a dietary risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) and ovarian cancer. The aim of this study is to review the evidence and to propose possible mechanisms regarding the relations between lactose intake and CHD and ovarian cancer. Epidemiological studies support the connection of lactose and CHD. Although several mechanisms for elucidation of this connection have been suggested, calcium theory is the most plausible. Galactose is known to be toxic to ovary. Galactose has been suggested to induce ovarian cancer through hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Some epidemiological data support this but others do not. Consumption of lactose or galactose can induce CHD and ovarian cancer; however, more research will be needed in order to determine the relation between lactose and these diseases.

<P>Among the possible delivery routes, the oral administration of a protein is simple and achieves high patient compliance without pain. However, the low bioavailability of a protein drug in the intestine due to the physical barriers of the intestinal epithelia is the most critical problem that needs to be solved. To overcome the low bioavailability of a protein drug in the intestine, we aimed to construct a recombinant Pichia pastoris expressing a human growth hormone (hGH) fusion protein conjugated with a transcytotic peptide (TP) that was screened through peroral phage display to target goblet cells in the intestinal epithelia. The TP-conjugated hGH was successfully produced in P. pastoris in a secreted form at concentrations of up to 0.79 g/l. The function of the TP-conjugated hGH was validated by in vitro and in vivo assays. The transcytotic function of the TP through the intestinal epithelia was verified only in the C terminus conjugated hGH, which demonstrated the induction of IGF-1 in a HepG2 cell culture assay, a higher translocation of recombinant hGH into the ileal villi after oral administration in rats and both IGF-1 induction and higher body weight gain in rats after oral administration. The present study introduces the possibility for the development of an effective oral protein delivery system in the pharmaceutical and animal industries through the introduction of an effective TP into hGH.</P>

Background: We have reported that arterial micro-calcifi cation (AMC) of vascular access has a negative impact on access patency and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Reasons behind increased cardiovascular mortality in AMC are not fully understood, but it is believed that aortic stiffness is a major contributing factor. Whereas, coronary artery calcifi cation (CAC) is quite common in HD patients and it is known as predictor of future cardiovascular events and all cause mortality in HD patients. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between AMC and CAC in HD patients. Methods: One hundred HD patients who received vascular access operation were included in this study. The AMC was diagnosed by pathologic examination of arterial specimen by von Kossa stain, which was acquired during the operation. All patients underwent a multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) imaging procedure and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) was calculated. Patients were classifi ed into two groups, according to the CACS, as low (<100), in 40 patients, and high (≥100), in 60 patients. We compared CACS between the patients with and without AMC. Results: Mean age was 65.1 ± 12.7 years and the male gender was 63 (63.0%). The incidence of AMC was 60.0% (n=60). The mean CACS was 486.8 ± 857.6 (0-5674.1), and the median value was 161.2. Patients with the positive AMC group showed a signifi cantly higher prevalence of diabetes (85.7% vs 45.5%, p=0.000). Positive AMC group showed high incidence of high CACS compared to negative AMC group (76.8% vs 38.6%, p=0.000). By binary logistic regression, high CACS was independently associated with positive AMC (OR 7.566, 95% CI 1.771-32.322, p=0.006). Conclusions: The present study suggests that AMC is closely associated with CACS in HD patients.

<P>Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been suggested as suitable materials for biomedical applications, especially in the neural area. It is essential not only to investigate the biocompatibility of CNTs with the neural system but also to determine proper methods for applying CNTs to neuronal growth. This work represents the first application of CNTs by electrospun poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds for a neural system. We synthesized electrospun nanocomposites of PLGA and single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized by carboxylic acid groups (c-SWNTs), and investigated neurite outgrowth from SH-SY5Y cells on these nanocomposites as compared to that on fibrous PLGA alone. Cells on our PLGA/c-SWNT nanocomposite showed significantly enhanced mitochondrial function and neurite outgrowth compared to cells on PLGA alone. We concluded that c-SWNTs incorporated into fibrous PLGA scaffolds exerted a positive role on the health of neural cells.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have distinctive characteristics such as high conductivity which could help the promotion of neuronal function. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) involves persistent inflammation and fibrosis, leading to respiratory failure and even death. Adult tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show potential in ILD therapeutics but obtaining an adequate quantity of cells for drug application is difficult. Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s MSCs (DW-MSCs) derived from embryonic stem cells sustain a high proliferative capacity following long-term culture and expansion. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of DW-MSCs in experimental mouse models of ILD. DW-MSCs were expanded up to 12 passages for in vivo application in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis and collagen-induced connective tissue disease- ILD mouse models. We assessed lung inflammation and fibrosis, lung tissue immune cells, fibrosis-related gene/protein expression, apoptosis and mitochondrial function of alveolar epithelial cells, and mitochondrial transfer ability. Intravenous administration of DWMSCs consistently improved lung fibrosis and reduced inflammatory and fibrotic markers expression in both models across various disease stages. The therapeutic effect of DW-MSCs was comparable to that following daily oral administration of nintedanib or pirfenidone. Mechanistically, DW-MSCs exhibited immunomodulatory effects by reducing the number of B cells during the early phase and increasing the ratio of Tregs to Th17 cells during the late phase of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Furthermore, DW-MSCs exhibited antiapoptotic effects, increased cell viability, and improved mitochondrial respiration in alveolar epithelial cells by transferring their mitochondria to alveolar epithelial cells. Our findings indicate the strong potential of DW-MSCs in the treatment of ILD owing to their high efficacy and immunomodulatory and anti-apoptotic effects.
