Although it is known that hypothyroidism can cause cardiac dysfunction, it is very hard to find a case report on sudden death due to hypothyroidism. There are only two reported cases on mediline; one is about a 15-year-old girl who died suddenly of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the other is about a 31-year-old man who also died suddenly of hypothyroidism associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. Recently we found a young woman who unexpectedly died while she was sleeping. She was diagnosed as hypothyroidism when she went to hospital about a month before she died. At autopsy there were roughly four abnormal findings; Hashimoto's thyroiditis, mild chronic active hepatitis, diverticulosis and accessory spleen. Trace of chlorpheniramine was detected in gastric remains and blood alcohol level was 0.37 percent. To our knowledge, this is the first case reporting sudden and unexpected natural death associated with hypothyroidism in Korea.

The 7th International Workshop of the Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology (ASGO) was held by the Chinese Society of Gynecologic Oncology (CSGO) and Peking Union Medical College Hospital on 27th to 28th August 2022. The 2022 workshop was the first ASGO congress that was held in mainland China. Due to the COVID situation, this workshop was conducted virtually. Five hundred eighty-seven participants from 13 countries/regions (Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, and United State of America) attended the meeting (Table 1). Dr. Beihua Kong (Shandong, China), president of CSGO, served as the president. Dr. Yang Xiang, president-elect of Chinese Medical Association (CMA) Gynecologic Oncology division, served as the executive president of the 7th ASGO workshop. Following the 18th ASGO council meeting on August 26th (Fig. 1), the workshop was grandly held on August 27th and 28th virtually.

There is growing evidence that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is associated with increased risks of psychiatric sequelae. Depression, anxiety, cognitive impairments, sleep disturbance, and fatigue during and after the acute phase of COVID-19 are prevalent, long-lasting, and exerting negative consequences on well-being and imposing a huge burden on healthcare systems and society. This current review presented timely updates of clinical research findings, particularly focusing on the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the neuropsychiatric sequelae, and identified potential key targets for developing effective treatment strategies for long COVID. In addition, we introduced the Formosa Long COVID Multicenter Study (FOCuS), which aims to apply the inflammation theory to the pathogenesis and the psychosocial and nutrition treatments of post-COVID depression and anxiety.

Objective: To compare patient survival outcomes between completion hysterectomy and conventional surveillance in locally advanced adenocarcinoma of the cervix after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Methods: Patients with adenocarcinoma of the cervix after CCRT were identified in a tertiary academic center database from 2004 to 2018. Patients received completion hysterectomy or surveillance after CCRT. We compared the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between the patients with or without adjuvant hysterectomy. Surgery features, operative complications, and pathologic characteristics were documented. Patient outcomes were also analyzed according to clinicopathologic factors. Results: A total of 78 patients were assigned to completion surgery and 97 to surveillance after CCRT. The PFS was better in the surgery group compared to the CCRT only group, at 3 years the PFS rates were 68.1% and 45.2%, respectively (hazard ratio [HR]=0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.282–0.749; p=0.002). Adjuvant surgery was also associated with a higher rate of OS (HR=0.361; 95% CI=0.189–0.689; p=0.002), at 3 years, 87.9% and 67%, respectively. Tumor stage, size, lymph-vascular space invasion (LVSI), lymphadenopathy were associated with PFS but not with OS. Hysterectomy specimens revealed 64.1% (50/78) of the patients had pathologic residual tumor. Patients age less than 60, tumor size over 4 cm, stage IIB and persistent residual disease after CCRT were most likely to benefit from hysterectomy. Hysterectomy was associated with a lower rate of locoregional recurrence but did not reach statistical significance (5.13% vs. 13.5%, p=0.067). Conclusion: Completion hysterectomy after CCRT was associated with better survival outcome compared with the current standard of care.
