      • Fabrication of highly efficient coatable polarizer from tolane-based smectic reactive mesogen

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This work is aimed to fabricate ultra-thin coatable polarizers on a single substrate based on “host-guest” effect between highly ordered smectic reactive mesogen (RM) and dichroic dye. We designed and synthesized a new tolane-based RM with a highly ordered smectic A phase at room temperature. Polymerizable “host-guest” mixture was formulated from the host RM, dichroic dye and additives, then spin-coated on a single substrate having an alignment layer. Subsequent in-situ photopolymerization by UV irradiation successfully resulted in a coatable polarizer with good polarizing properties. The fabricated coatable polarizer showed a dichroic ratio (DR) of 16.4 and a degree of polarization (DOP) of 99.3% with the thickness of 4 μm. The resulting coatable polarizer possessed a considerable solvent resistance, good thermal stability and robust mechanical properties. Moreover, we prepared a TN-mode LC cell by using the prepared coatable polarizers inside the cell (in-cell), in which the coatable polarizers acted as a polarizer and an alignment layer, simultaneously. The resulting TN cell with in-cell polarizers exhibited a decent electro-optical behavior.         Stanniocalcin-1 protects bovine intestinal epithelial cells from oxidative stress-induced damage

        Chronic enteritis can produce an excess of reactive oxygenspecies resulting in cellular damage. Stanniocalcin-1(STC-1)reportedly possesses anti-oxidative activity, the aim of thisstudy was to define more clearly the direct contribution ofSTC-1 to anti-oxidative stress in cattle. In this study, primaryintestinal epithelial cells (IECs) were exposed to hydrogenperoxide (H2O2) for different time intervals to mimic chronicenteritis-induced cellular damage. Prior to treatment with 200μM H2O2, the cells were transfected with a recombinantplasmid for 48 h to over-express STC-1. Acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB) double staining and trypan blueexclusion assays were then performed to measure cell viabilityand apoptosis of the cells, respectively. The expression of STC-1and apoptosis-related proteins in the cells was monitored byreal-time PCR and Western blotting. The results indicated thatboth STC-1 mRNA and protein expression levels positivelycorrelated with the duration of H2O2 treatment. H2O2 damagedthe bovine IECs in a time-dependent manner, and this effectwas attenuated by STC-1 over-expression. Furthermore, overexpressionof STC-1 up-regulated Bcl-2 protein expression andslightly down-regulated caspase-3 production in the damagedcells. Findings from this study suggested that STC-1 plays aprotective role in intestinal cells through an antioxidant mechanism.

        A Highly Stretchable, Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on the Dry Printing Method

        Use of Electronic skin (E-skin) has attracted significant attention, as it has broad application prospects in medical care, wearable electronic equipment, and body monitoring — particularly with respect to human motion detection. In this work, we developed a flexible, tensile strain sensor based on the dry printing method. A conductive layer, with a miniaturized network structure, was obtained by: (1) packing the grooves of a grid-like silicon template with a conductive powder composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles; (2) infiltrating liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) into the powder voids using a coated, flexible PDMS substrate cover; (3) transferring the solidified, patterned conductive powder onto the flexible substrate by peeling the PDMS substrate cover off the template; (4) fabricating metal electrodes at both ends of the conductive layer and (5) encapsulating the strain sensor with liquid PDMS. After manufacture, the strain sensor was tested using the tensile test. Results from the tensile test demonstrate that the sensor has excellent electrical conductivity, including super high-sensitivity (GF > 1450), a large strain range (up to 35%), and good transparency; as ultraviolet (UV) spectrum analysis shows that the transmittance can reach > 60%. Thus, the sensor is potentially applicable to numerous sub-specialties that require specialized electronics.

        Immobilization of Lactase onto Various Polymer Nanofibers for Enzyme Stabilization and Recycling

        Five different polymer nanofibers, namely, polyaniline nanofiber (PANI), magnetically separable polyaniline nanofiber (PAMP), magnetically separable DEAE cellulose fiber (DEAE), magnetically separable CM cellulose fiber (CM), and polystyrene nanofiber (PSNF), have been used for the immobilization of lactase (E.C. 3.2.1.23). Except for CM and PSNF, three polymers showed great properties. The catalytic activities (kcat) of the free, PANI, PAMP, and magnetic DEAE-cellulose were determined to be 4.0, 2.05, 0.59, and 0.042 mM/min·mg protein, respectively. The lactase immobilized on DEAE, PANI, and PAMP showed improved stability and recyclability. PANI- and PAMP-lactase showed only a 0-3% decrease in activity after 3 months of vigorous shaking conditions (200 rpm) and at room temperature (25oC). PANI-, PAMP-, and DEAE-lactase showed a high percentage of conversion (100%, 47%, and 12%) after a 1 h lactose hydrolysis reaction. The residual activities of PANI-, PAMP-, and DEAE-lactase after 10 times of recycling were 98%, 96%, and 97%, respectively.

      • Primary Thyroid Lymphoma: Multi-Slice Computed Tomography Findings

        Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the MSCT characteristics of PTL in order to enhance the awareness of this uncommon entity among both clinicians and radiologists. Materials and Methods: The clinicopathological data and MSCT images of 27 patients with PTL were retrospectively reviewed. The MSCT appearances were classified into three types: type 1, solitary nodule surrounded by normal thyroid tissue; type 2, multiple nodules in the thyroid, and type 3, enlarged thyroid glands with a reduced attenuation with or without peripheral thin hyperattenuating thyroid tissue. Results: The patients were enrolled in the study with a mean age of 68 years (range, 51-86years) and compression symptoms or enlarged cervical lymph nodes at diagnosis. Hashimoto's thyroiditis was in 20 patients. All patients had non-Hodgkin lymphoma of B-cell in origin, including 22 cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and 5 of low-grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). For MSCT appearance, type 1 pattern was observed in 2 patients, type 2 in 8, and seventeen type 3 in 17. The lesions occurred in more than one lobe with a mean maximal transverse diameter of 6.9 cm and an ill-defined margin. Most tumors showed a homogeneous attenuation equal to that of surrounding muscles before contrast and obvious enhancement after contrast. Cervical lymph node involvement and invasion of the trahea and (or) esophagus were mainly observed in patients with DLBCL. Conclusions: PTL should be clinically considered in elder patients presenting with a history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and cervical lymphadenopathy. The MSCT characteristics of PTL includes a mass diffusely affecting more than one thyroid lobe, isointense to muscle and obvious enhancement before and after contrast. DLBCL, the most common histological subtype of PTL, is associated with a higher invasive tendency.

        Reactive melt processing of polyamide 6/reduced graphene oxide nano-composites and its electrically conductive behavior

        Based on the industrialized reduced graphene oxide (RGO) product, the graphene precursor of RGO-TDI with reactive sites of isocyanate groups was prepared with high grafting ratio, and a series of PA6/RGO-TDI composites were prepared via reactive melt processing. The PA6 molecules were confirmed to reactively intercalate into RGO layers through covalent and hydrogen bonding, which had high grafting ratio and layer thickness, exhibiting almost monolayer dispersion state. The molecular bridge effect of exfoliated RGO-TDI lowered activation energy of electrically conductive network formation, which resulted in a rapid increase of electrical conductivity of the composites with a low threshold percolation.

        Syntheses and Properties of New Smectic Reactive Mesogens and Their Application in Guest-Host Polarizer

        We designed and synthesized new smectic liquid crystalline monomers containing photopolymerizable acrylate groups and a mesogenic core unit composed of two benzene rings, one pyrimidine-based heteroaromatic ring and an acetylene linking group. The structures of monomers were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and their mesomorphic behaviors were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. Both of monomers showed an enantiotropic phase transition behavior with exhibiting both nematic phase and highly ordered smectic phase. Both of monomers showed smectic phases during the cooling process in the temperature range of 144.2-94.0oC and 154.0-85.8oC, respectively. Neither of these compounds showed a homogeneous alignment even at various temperatures, and therefore, their 50:50 mixture was chosen for the preparation of guest-host mixture because of its lowest crystallization point, wide smectic phase temperature range and superior aligning property. Polymerizable “host-guest” mixture formulated from the host liquid crystalline monomer mixture, dichroic dye and additives was injected into the sandwiched glass substrates having rubbed alignment layers at the isotropic temperature. Subsequent in-situ photopolymerization by UV irradiation at room temperature successfully resulted in a thin film polarizer with good polarizing properties. The fabricated guest-host polarizer showed a dichroic ratio (DR) of 13.1 and a degree of polarization (DOP) of 95.5% with the thickness of 5 μm.

        Study on Mechanical Properties Modification of Styrene Butadiene Rubber Composites Filling with Graphene and Molybdenum Disulfide

        Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites, incorporated with graphene, molybdenum disulfide and their hybrid in different filling ratio, were fabricated by a two roll-mill. The dispersion states of all the samples' matrix were employed by carbon black dispersion tester. The curing properties of the pre-vulcanized rubber composites were investigated, after molding by heating press machine, the tensile strength, storage modulus, friction coefficient, the swelling property had also been tested according to ASTM. The composite G1M10 (filling with 1 phr graphene and 10 phr molybdenum) showed the best mechanical properties and viscoelastic properties in this research with a better filler dispersion state and more compact matrix structure.

        In situ synthesis of monomer casting nylon-6/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites: Intercalation structure and electrically conductive properties

        Based on the industrialized reduced graphene oxide (RGO) product, MC nylon-6/RGO composites were insitu synthesized through anchoring effect of polyetheramine (PEA). Nylon-6 chains were confirmed tointercalate into RGO layers with high grafting ratio by formation of covalent bond and intermolecularhydrogen bond. By presence of PEA, RGO was well exfoliated by the nylon-6 chains and the average layerthickness increased remarkably. Moreover, the stacking of RGO layers was much more weakened andexhibited almost monolayer homogenous dispersion state in the matrix, resulting in the establishment ofthe electrically conductive network with a low threshold percolation.
