        4000年前全球降温事件与中国五帝联盟的诞生

        Archaeology of Neolithic era proved that Chinese civilization originated diversely and developed independently. Archaeologist Su Bingqi divided Neolithic culture into six parts: Yangshao, Hongshan, Liangzhu, Dawenkou, Majiayao and Qujialing cultural districts. By the Longshan culture period, social development of each cultural district had reached to a very high level. Global cooling and flood, drought triggered by it in 4200-4000 ago brought enormous disaster to five cultural districts except for Yangshao. The tribes in these five districts started to migrate to the middle reaches of the Yellow river. Finally, a huge tribal alliance-the five emperors’ league was established through mutual compromise. Then Chinese civilization changed form “starring night” to “the YellowRivercivilization”stage. 4200—4000前的全球降温及其引发的洪水、旱灾给 仰韶之外的五大文化区带来了巨大灾难,这些地区居住的部落向黄河中游地区迁徙。这些部落与 居住在黄河中游原住部落之间爆发了冲突,最终通过相互妥协得到了解决,建立了一个庞大的部落联盟,这就是五帝联盟。中国文明 由此由“漫天星斗”转为“黄河文明”阶段。

        Effects of Glucagon-Like Peptide-2-Expressing Saccharomyces cerevisiae Not Different from Empty Vector

        Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) have been employed to improve the intestinal development of weaned animals. The goal of this study was to determine whether either exogenous S. cerevisiae or GLP-2 elicits major effects on fecal microbiotas and cytokine responses in weaned piglets. Ninety-six piglets weaned at 26 days were assigned to one of four groups: 1) Basal diet (Control), 2) empty vector-harboring S. cerevisiae (EV-SC), 3) GLP-2-expressing S. cerevisiae (GLP2-SC), and 4) recombinant human GLP-2 (rh-GLP2). At the start of the post-weaning period (day 0), and at day 28, fecal samples were collected to assess the bacterial communities via sequencing the V1-V2 region of the 16SrRNA gene, and piglets’ blood was also sampled to measure cytokine responses (i.e., IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ). This study revealed that, on the one hand, although S. cerevisiae supplementation did not significantly alter the growth of weaned piglets, it induced increases in the relative abundances of two core genera (Ruminococcaceae_norank and Erysipelotrichaceae_norank) and decreases in the relative abundances of two other core genera (Lachnospiraceae_norank and Clostridiale_norank) and cytokine levels (IL-1β and TNF-α) (p < 0.05, Control vs EV-SC; p < 0.05, rh-GLP2 vs GLP2-SC). On the other hand, GLP-2 supplementation had no significant influence on fecal bacterial communities and cytokine levels, but it produced better body weight and average daily gain (p < 0.05, Control vs EV-SC; p < 0.05, rh-GLP2 vs GLP2-SC). Therefore, altered fecal microbiotas and cytokine response effects in weaned piglets were due to S. cerevisiae rather than GLP-2.

        Reports : IGF1 potentiates BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells through the enhancement of BMP/Smad signaling

        Engineered bone tissue is thought to be the ideal alternative for bone grafts in the treatment of related bone diseases. BMP9 has been demonstrated as one of the most osteogenic factors, and enhancement of BMP9-induced osteogenesis will greatly accelerate the development of bone tissue engineering. Here, we investigated the effect of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) on BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation, and unveiled a possible molecular mechanism underling this process. We found that IGF1 and BMP9 are both detectable in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Exogenous expression of IGF1 potentiates BMP9-induced alkaline phosphatase (ALP), matrix mineralization, and ectopic bone formation. Similarly, IGF1 enhances BMP9-induced endochondral ossification. Mechanistically, we found that IGF1 increases BMP9-induced activation of BMP/Smad signaling in MSCs. Our findings demonstrate that IGF1 can enhance BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation in MSCs, and that this effect may be mediated by the enhancement of the BMP/Smad signaling transduction triggered by BMP9.         Assessment of the Severity of Coronavirus Disease: Quantitative Computed Tomography Parameters versus Semiquantitative Visual Score

        Objective: To compare the accuracies of quantitative computed tomography (CT) parameters and semiquantitative visual score in evaluating clinical classification of severity of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 187 patients with COVID-19 treated at Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College from February 15, 2020, to February 29, 2020. Demographic data, imaging characteristics, and clinical data were collected, and based on the clinical classification of severity, patients were divided into groups 1 (mild) and 2 (severe/ critical). A semiquantitative visual score was used to estimate the lesion extent. A three-dimensional slicer was used to precisely quantify the volume and CT value of the lung and lesions. Correlation coefficients of the quantitative CT parameters, semiquantitative visual score, and clinical classification were calculated using Spearman’s correlation. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to compare the accuracies of quantitative and semi-quantitative methods. Results: There were 59 patients in group 1 and 128 patients in group 2. The mean age and sex distribution of the two groups were not significantly different. The lesions were primarily located in the subpleural area. Compared to group 1, group 2 had larger values for all volume-dependent parameters (p < 0.001). The percentage of lesions had the strongest correlation with disease severity with a correlation coefficient of 0.495. In comparison, the correlation coefficient of semiquantitative score was 0.349. To classify the severity of COVID-19, area under the curve of the percentage of lesions was the highest (0.807; 95% confidence interval, 0.744–0.861: p < 0.001) and that of the quantitative CT parameters was significantly higher than that of the semiquantitative visual score (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The classification accuracy of quantitative CT parameters was significantly superior to that of semiquantitative visual score in terms of evaluating the severity of COVID-19.

      • AEROSOL SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION IN URBAN AREAS OF NORTHERN CHINA

        Based on monitoring data collected in the northern cities of China since 1980, the particle size spectra, distribution modes and the elements distribution features are dicussed in this article. It is found that the major aerial contaminant in urban aerosol of northern China is fine dust. It makes up about 70% of the total suspended particulate matter by mass concentration. The spectra of aerosol particles in the range 0.5-15.0㎛ are all unimodal structures. Regardless of narrow or broad profiles, their peak values fall between 0.5 and 1.0㎛, while their surface area spectra present a trimodal structure. The three peaks are in the range 0.5-1.8, 2-8 and 10.20 ㎛, respectively. Of these peaks the surface area concentration of particulates had made a large contribution to the first and the second peaks. The shape of mass distribution also presents a trimodal structure, and the positions of the three peaks are the same as those found in the surface area pattern. Mineral elements mainly exist in large size particles. The anthropogenic pollution elements, however, are contained in corpuscles (<2.0㎛). Compared to the situation in winter, some element concentrations of particulates in summer are found to have generally decreased. Copyright ⓒ 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

      • Expression of Pituitary Tumor Transforming Gene 1 is an Independent Factor of Poor Prognosis in Localized or Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer Cases Receiving Hormone Therapy

        We investigated the prognostic value of pituitary tumor transforming gene 1 (PTTG1) expression according to clinicopathological features among localized or locally advanced prostate cancer cases receiving hormone therapy. A retrospective study involved 64 patients receiving combined androgen blockade treatment was performed. PTTG1 expression was determined by immunohistochemical staining using initial needle biopsy specimens for diagnosis. Associations of PTTG1 with various clinicopathological features and disease-free survival were examined via uni- and multivariate analyses. No association between PTTG1 expression and clinical T stage, Gleason score, pretreatment PSA levels, risk groups was found (p =0.682, 0.184, 0.487, 0.571, respectively). Univariate analysis revealed that increased PTTG1 expression, T3 stage and high risk group were associated with increased risk of disease progression (p =0.000, 0.042, and 0.001), and high PSA level had a tendency to predict disease progression (p =0.056). Cox hazard ratio analysis showed that PTTG1 low expression (p =0.002), PTTG1 high expression (p =0.000) and high risk group (p =0.0147) were significantly related to decreased disease-free survival. In conclusion, PTTG1 expression determined by immunohistochemical staining in needle biopsy specimens for diagnosis is a negative prognostic factor for progression in localized or locally advanced prostate cancer receiving hormone therapy.

        姬姓周部落及其婚族圖騰探索

        The surname Ji is the family name of both the rulers of Zhou Dynasty in Chinese history and the ancestor of Huaxia - the Yellow Emperor. Inspecting the tribal totems of Zhou Tribes with the surname Ji is of great importance to get to know the origin of Zhou Tribes, the early Zhou history and Huaxia formation history. With respect to the tribal totems of Zhou Tribes with the surname Ji, predecessors put forward quite many views that include bears, turtles, millet and earthworms etc., which are sort of reasonable but contain huge one-sidedness. Starting from the auspicious sign during Emperor Wu of Zhou Dynasty’s crusade that is claimed by Zhou Dynasty, this paper ascertains that the tribal totem of Zhou Tribes with the surname Ji is a kind of red bird - Chiwu, also known as Yuezhuo. Judged from the document like <The Book of songs·Epics·The Birth of People>, the tribal totem which has marriage link with Zhou Tribes with the surname Ji are cattle, sheep, snakes and fishes etc. Bears, turtles, millet and earthworms which are put forward by predecessors are just marriage totems of Zhou Tribes with the surname Ji or related cultural characteristics, but not the totems of Zhou Dynasty people.

        Characteristics of Ozone Concentration in the Rural Area of Korea

        Continuous measurements of ground-level ozone (O_3) were made in five minutes intervals in the rural area of Korea from July 1993 to June 1994. This site is located in Chongwon, near latitude 36.4˚ N, longitude 127.6˚ E. The results show that the one-year mean value was 17 ppb, and monthly mean ranged from 6 to 47 ppb. A pronounced maximum in summer and a minimum in winter were found, and these were related to anthropogenic emission and photochemical reaction. Diurnal variations of ozone concentration showed a normal distribution with a maximum at 15:00 - 16:00 and a minimum at 07:00 - 08:00. During the period when ozone concentration was very high (> 80 ppb), the stable winds were from N and NW; on the other hand, when ozone concentration was very low, air movement in the large scale was from the North Pacific Ocean. This suggests that in the rural area the long range transport of anthropogenic pollutants from distant sources can contribute to the larger contribution than the generation of ozone from local sources in the rural area.

        Biphasic effects of TGFβ1 on BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells

        We have found that the previously uncharacterized bone morphogenetic protein-9 (BMP9) is one of the most osteogenic factors. However, it is unclear if BMP9 cross-talks with TGFβ1 during osteogenic differentiation. Using the recombinant BMP9 adenovirus, we find that low concentration of rhTGFβ1 synergistically induces alkaline phosphatase activity in BMP9-transduced C3H10T1/2 cells and produces more pronounced matrix mineralization. However, higher concentrations of TGFβ1 inhibit BMP9-induced osteogenic activity. Real-time PCR and Western blotting indicate that BMP9 in combination with low dose of TGFβ1 potentiates the expression of later osteogenic markers osteopontin, osteocalcin and collagen type 1 (COL1a2), while higher concentrations of TGFβ1 decrease the expression of osteopontin and osteocalcin but not COL1a2. Cell cycle analysis reveals that TGFβ1 inhibits C3H10T1/2 proliferation in BMP9-induced osteogenesis and restricts the cells in G0/G1 phase. Our findings strongly suggest that TGFβ1 may exert a biphasic effect on BMP9-induced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. [BMB Reports 2012; 45(9): 509-514]
