A snake model, proposed by Kass et al., may yield different forms of image contours depending on an energy functional being minimized and a minimization procedure used. This paper addresses the problem of minimizing the energy functional so that a resulting snake may represent desired image contours. We show that good results can be obtained by shaking a search area over which an energy functional is to be minimized.

평야지재배 적응 조생종 벼 품종의 선발 및 품종 육성의 기초 자료로 활용코자 극조생종(1품종)과 조생종(10품종) 및 준조생(3품종)등 총 14품종을 산간지(운봉)와 평야지(익산)에 지역별 표준재배법으로 공시한 결과, 1. 극조생종 및 조생종들은 감온성이 커 산간지에서 출수가 빠르나, 준조생종에 속하는 상미벼, 영덕34호, 히또메보레 등은 감광성이 감온성보다 커, 평야지재배에서 4일정도 빨리 출수하였다. 2. 수량성은 대부분의 품종들이 산간지재배에 비해 평야지 재배에서 높았고 대체로 출수가 빠른 품종일수록 지역간의 수량차가 크게 나타났으며, 출수가 다소 늦은 준조생종들은 산간지와 평야지의 재배에서 수량차가 크지 않아 산간지 뿐만 아니라 평야지에서도 적응성이 높았다. 3. 단백질함량은 숙기가 다소 늦은 품종일수록 낮은 경향을 보였고 산간지보다는 평야지에서 낮았으며, 품종간에는 오대벼, 운봉30호, 영덕34호, 신석조생, 상미벼 등이 함유량이 낮았다. 4. 식미치는 산간지재배가 평야지에 비해 보다 높게 나타났고, 출수가 늦을수록 높았으며, 지역간 차가 크게 나타난 품종은 극조생종인 키라라397이었고, 출수가 늦은 상미벼와 히또메보레는 차가 적었다. 5. 산온도와 수량과의 상관은 산간지에서만 영향이 있을 뿐 평야에서는 영향이 적고 일사량과 일조시수가 수량에 보다 상관성이 높았으며, 식미치는 적산온도와는 부의상관, 생육 일수와는 정상관을 보였다. This experiment was carried out to clarify the difference of rice yield and the quality of rice in southern plan area and in alpine area. Yield and quality of fourteen early varieties were investigated under the different transplanting dates and planting densities in southern plan area(Iksan) and in alpine area(Unbong). In the alpine area, extremely early variety and early varieties headed early compared to the plain area, but medium early varieties headed about 4 days late unlike the alpine area. The yield difference of most early varieties including Kilara 397 of extremely early flowering variety were greater in plain area than in alpine. The different of yield between plain and alpine area was less in varieties with Sinseogjosaeng, Odaebyeo, Akidagomachi, and Yeungdeuk34. The rate of protein was lower in plain area than alpine and more lately flowering than early, but palatability of milled rice was higher at the alpine area and more lately flowering varieties. Correlation coefficients between yield and meterological data during maturity, yield shower the significant correlation with integrated solar radiation and sunshine hours at cultured in southern plan area, but it showed only cumulative temperature in alpine area. Palatability of miller rice was positive correlation at growth duration but negative correlation at cumulative temperature.
Current Techniques for Treating Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors in the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract

Most gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) arise from the proper muscle layer of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract and have a low malignant potential. They are sometimes accompanied by symptoms, but in most cases are detected by chance. Endoscopic surgery of subepithelial tumors in the upper GI tract has been actively performed, and its merits include the need for fewer medical devices compared with other surgical procedures and post-resection organ preservation. However, because endoscopic procedures are still limited to small or pilot studies, a multidisciplinary approach combining laparoscopy and endoscopy is needed for more effective and pathologically acceptable management of GISTs. Many new endoscopic surgeries have been developed, and this review describes the current status of and the new approaches for endoscopic surgery of GISTs in the upper GI tract.

The concept of using natural orifices to reduce the complications of surgery, Natural Orifices Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery,has also been applied to therapeutic endoscopy. Endoscopic submucosal surgery (ESS) provides more treatment options for variousgastrointestinal diseases than traditional therapeutic endoscopy by using the submucosal layer as a working space. ESS has beenperformed in various fields ranging from transluminal peritoneoscopy to peroral endoscopic myotomy. With further advances intechnology, ESS will be increasingly useful for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

A 49-year-old woman visited our hospital with dysphagia and chest pain. In another hospital, she was diagnosed as reflux esophagitis. Although she had taken proton pump inhibitor and prokinetics drugs for a long time, she was not relieved of any symptoms. On the basis of high resolution manometry and endoscopic ultrasonography findings, Jackhammer esophagus was diagnosed. In this patient, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) was performed for long myotomy of thickened circular muscle. During the procedure, there were no significant complications and she was discharged uneventfully. Symptoms were completely improved during three months after POEM. Here, we report on a case of Jackhammer esophagus treated by POEM. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2014;64:370-374)

Hyperbilirubinemia is commonly observed following allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). It is sometimes associated with severe complications after HSCT with a major impact on transplant outcomes. Here, we describe a case of a Ph-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patient with moderate thrombocytopenia who developed subdural hemorrhage (SDH) following allogenic HSCT. He presented with hyperbilirubinemia after a HSCT, so drugs that were known to cause hepatotoxicity were stopped and his situation was reexamined to rule out other causes. But the hyperbilirubinemia was continuous, and we came to the conclusion that hyperbilirubinemia was caused by the blood from the ruptured blood vessel that occurred with the appearance of increased intracranial pressure.

<P><I>Codonopsis lanceolata</I> (<I>C. lanceolata</I>) is a traditional medicinal plant used for the treatment of certain inflammatory diseases such as asthma, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis. We evaluated whether steamed and fermented<I> C. lanceolata</I> (SFC) extract improves amyloid-<I>β</I>- (A<I>β</I>-) induced learning and memory impairment in mice. The Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests were used to evaluate the effect of SFC extract. Moreover, we investigated acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling in the hippocampus of mice to determine a possible mechanism for the cognitive-enhancing effect. Saponin compounds in SFC were identified by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). SFC extract ameliorated amyloid-<I>β</I>-induced memory impairment in the Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests. SFC extract inhibited AChE activity and also significantly increased the level of CREB phosphorylation, BDNF expression, and ERK activation in hippocampal tissue of amyloid-<I>β</I>-treated mice. Lancemasides A, B, C, D, E, and G and foetidissimoside A compounds present in SFC were determined by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS. These results indicate that SFC extract improves A<I>β</I>-induced memory deficits and that AChE inhibition and CREB/BDNF/ERK expression is important for the effect of the SFC extract. In addition, lancemaside A specifically may be responsible for efficacious effect of SFC.</P>

Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) traditionally have been used as a tonic and to treat patients with lung abscesses. Recently, it was proposed that the extract and some compounds isolated from C. lanceolata reversed scopolamine-induced memory and learning defi cits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the improvement of cognitive enhancing effect of C. lanceolata by steam and fermentation process in scopolamine-induced memory impairment mice models by passive avoidance test and Morris water maze test. The extract of C. lanceolata or the extract of steamed and fermented C. lanceolata (SFCE) was orally administered to male mice at the doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg body weight. As a result, mice treated with steamed and fermented C. lanceolata extract (SFCE) (300 mg/kg body weight, p.o.) showed shorter escape latencies than those with C. lanceolata extract or the scopolamine-administered group in Morris water maze test. Also, it exerted longer step-through latency time than scopolamine treated group in passive avoidance test. Furthermore, neuroprotective effect of SFCE on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity was assessed in HT22 cells. Only SFCE-treated cells showed signifi cant protection at 500 μg/ml. Interestingly, steamed C. lanceolata with fermentation contained more phenolic acid including gallic acid and vanillic acid than original C. lanceolata. Collectively, these results suggest that steam and fermentation process of C. lanceolata increased cognitive enhancing activity related to the memory processes and neuroprotective effect than original C. lanceolata.
