• Observation of the Talbot effect using broadband hard x-ray beam

        Kim, Jae Myung,Cho, In Hwa,Lee, Su Yong,Kang, Hyon Chol,Conley, Ray,Liu, Chian,Macrander, Albert T.,Noh, Do Young The Optical Society 2010 Optics express Vol.18 No.24

We demonstrated the Talbot effect using a broadband hard x-ray beam (?관/관 ~1). The exit wave-field of the x-ray beam passing through a grating with a sub micro-meter scale period was successfully replicated and recorded at effective Talbot distance, Z(T). The period was reduced to half at Z(T)/4 and 3/4Z(T), and the phase reversal was observed at Z(T)/2. The propagating wave-field recorded on photoresists was consistent with a simulated result.

      • Thermally Stable Silver Nanowires-Embedding Metal Oxide for Schottky Junction Solar Cells

        Kim, Hong-Sik,Patel, Malkeshkumar,Park, Hyeong-Ho,Ray, Abhijit,Jeong, Chaehwan,Kim, Joondong American Chemical Society 2016 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.8 No.13

Thermally stable silver nanowires (AgNWs)-embedding metal oxide was applied for Schottky junction solar cells without an intentional doping process in Si. A large scale (100 mm(2)) Schottky solar cell showed a power conversion efficiency of 6.1% under standard illumination, and 8.3% under diffused illumination conditions which is the highest efficiency for AgNWs-involved Schottky junction Si solar cells. Indium tin-oxide (ITO)-capped AgNWs showed excellent thermal stability with no deformation at 500 degrees C. The top ITO layer grew in a cylindrical shape along the AgNWs, forming a teardrop shape. The design of ITO/AgNWs/ITO layers is optically beneficial because the AgNWs generate plasmonic photons, due to the AgNWs. Electrical investigations were performed by Mott-Schottky and impedance spectroscopy to reveal the formation of a single space charge region at the interface between Si and AgNWs-embedding ITO layer. We propose a route to design the thermally stable AgNWs for photoelectric device applications with investigation of the optical and electrical aspects.

The synthesized phosphors have scheelite tetragonal structure. The elemental mapping suggests the uniform distribution of elements in the samples. The oxidation state of samples were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) which indicates the existence of Ba2+, Mo6+, O, Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+ in samples. The presence of rare earth ions was also verified by observation of specific absorption peaks in diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The tunable multicolor upconversion (UC) emissions were successfully obtained under 980 nm NIR excitation by precisely adjusting the concentration of rare earth ions. • The DOF transcription factor Dof5.1 influences leaf axial patterning by promoting Revoluta transcription in Arabidopsis

        Kim, Hyung-Sae,Kim, Sung Jin,Abbasi, Nazia,Bressan, Ray A.,Yun, Dae-Jin,Yoo, Sang-Dong,Kwon, Suk-Yun,Choi, Sang-Bong Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2010 The Plant journal Vol.64 No.3

Summary

Dof proteins are transcription factors that have a conserved single zinc finger DNA-binding domain. In this study, we isolated an activation tagging mutant Dof5.1-D exhibiting an upward-curling leaf phenotype due to enhanced expression of the REV gene that is required for establishing adaxial–abaxial polarity. Dof5.1-D plants also had reduced transcript levels for IAA6 and IAA19 genes, indicating an altered auxin biosynthesis in Dof5.1-D. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay using the Dof5.1 DNA-binding motif and the REV promoter region indicated that the DNA-binding domain of Dof5.1 binds to a TAAAGT motif located in the 5′-distal promoter region of the REV promoter. Further, transient and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays verified binding activity of the Dof5.1 DNA-binding motif with the REV promoter. Consistent with binding assays, constitutive over-expression of the Dof5.1 DNA-binding domain in wild-type plants caused a downward-curling phenotype, whereas crossing Dof5.1-D to a rev mutant reverted the upward-curling phenotype of the Dof5.1-D mutant leaf to the wild-type. These results suggest that the Dof5.1 protein directly binds to the REV promoter and thereby regulates adaxial–abaxial polarity.

Religion, Business, and Global Visions: An Exploration of South Korea’s Discourse on Halal

Ray Kim(레이 킴) 고려대학교 한국사연구소 2021 International Journal of Korean History Vol.26 No.2

Driven by economic exigencies, the Korean government began to strategize entering the rapidly expanding Islamic economy during the early 2000s. Subsequently, decisions to invest into the global halal market ignited public opposition from Korean evangelicals who rejected the positive economic framing of halal—an Islamic concept most commonly used to inform Muslim dietary laws. Based on fieldwork in Korea and analysis of Korean media sources, this article tracks the development of this “halal discourse” through a frame analysis of the discourses created by the Korean government, economic actors, and anti-halal evangelicals, and evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of their arguments. As these competing voices debated halal’s place in Korean society, the supporters of halal had to respond to evangelical pushback against halal, leading to notable shifts in the public discourse on halal, an issue that was rooted in deeper underlying debates concerning multiculturalism, globalization, and competing visions of Korea.

      • Temperature-Responsive Tensile Actuator Based on Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube Yarn

        Kim, Hyunsoo,Lee, Jae Ah,Sim, Hyeon Jun,Lima, Má,rcio D.,Baughman, Ray H.,Kim, Seon Jeong Springer Berlin Heidelberg 2016 Nano-micro letters Vol.8 No.3

Many temperature indicators or sensors show color changes for materials used in food and medical fields. However, they are not helpful for a color-blind person or children who lack judgment. In this paper, we introduce simply fabricated and more useful low-temperature indicator (~30 °C) for devices that actuates using paraffin-infiltrated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coiled yarn. The density difference of MWCNT yarn provides large strain (~330 %) when heat causes the melted polymer to move. Furthermore, the MWCNT yarn decreases the melting point of paraffin. These properties allow control of the actuating temperature. In addition, mechanical strength was enhanced by MWCNT than previously reported temperature-responsive actuators based on shape memory polymers. This simply fabricated temperature indicator can be applied in latching devices for medical and biological fields.

Electronic supplementary material

The online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s40820-016-0084-6) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Role of RIN4 in Regulating PAMP-Triggered Immunity and Effector-Triggered Immunity: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Ray, Sujit Kumar,Macoy, Donah Mary,Kim, Woe-Yeon,Lee, Sang Yeol,Kim, Min Gab Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2019 Molecules and cells Vol.42 No.7

As sessile organisms, plants have developed sophisticated system to defend themselves against microbial attack. Since plants do not have specialized immune cells, all plant cells appear to have the innate ability to recognize pathogens and turn on an appropriate defense response. The plant innate immune system has two major branches: PAMPs (pathogen associated molecular patterns)-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI). The ability to discriminate between self and non-self is a fundamental feature of living organisms, and it is a prerequisite for the activation of plant defenses specific to microbial infection. Arabidopsis cells express receptors that detect extracellular molecules or structures of the microbes, which are called collectively PAMPs and activate PTI. However, nucleotidebinding site leucine-rich repeats (NB-LRR) proteins mediated ETI is induced by direct or indirect recognition of effector molecules encoded by avr genes. In Arabidopsis, plasmamembrane localized multifunctional protein RIN4 (RPM1-interacting protein 4) plays important role in both PTI and ETI. Previous studies have suggested that RIN4 functions as a negative regulator of PTI. In addition, many different bacterial effector proteins modify RIN4 to destabilize plant immunity and several NB-LRR proteins, including RPM1 (resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola 1), RPS2 (resistance to P. syringae 2) guard RIN4. This review summarizes the current studies that have described signaling mechanism of RIN4 function, modification of RIN4 by bacterial effectors and different interacting partner of RIN4 in defense related pathway. In addition, the emerging role of the RIN4 in plant physiology and intercellular signaling as it presents in exosomes will be discussed.
