Virtual graphic representation of construction equipment for developing a 3D earthwork BIM
Moon, Sungwoo,Seo, Jongwon Technika 2017 Journal of Civil Engineering and Management Vol.23 No.8
<P> BIM provides a visualization of the construction design that allows a construction manager to review the construction process and the information that is associated with the progress. BIM is usually applied to modeling structural objects with parametric geometry where the sequence of process can be predefined. However, BIM technology can also be applied to objects with irregular shape where parametric modeling is not possible such as earthwork topography based on TIN (Triangular Irregular Network). The objective of this research is to develop a 3D earthwork BIM methodology and provide a graphic simulation that is capable of assisting construction equipment operators during excavation work. The 3D earthwork BIM presents a modeling technique that involves integrating hardware and software technologies. This combination of technologies is used to represent the actual excavator configuration in a 3D virtual environment. When it is applied to actual excavation work, it was proved that the 3D earthwork BIM could synchronize the virtual excavator configuration with the actual excavator configuration during excavation work in real time. </P>
Exploring the Natural Pigment Absorption Property of Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) on Textiles
( Sungwoo Moon ),( Youngjoo Chae ) 한국감성과학회 2021 추계학술대회 Vol.2021 No.0
This study quantitatively analyzed the color shifts of fabric dyed with different concentrations of reduced graphene oxide (rGO), mixed with natural dyes in different hues. Results showed that mixing different concentrations of rGO in natural dyeing can produce various colors of fabrics in terms of all the lightness, chroma, and hue. It was also found that the lightness of fabrics increased while the chroma decreased with the increment of the concentration of rGO, confirming rGO’s natural pigment absorption property.
Prototyping a remotely-controlled machine for concrete surface grinding operations
MOON, Sungwoo,KIM, Jeonghwan,SEO, Jongwon Vilnius Gediminas Technical University 2017 Journal of Civil Engineering and Management Vol.23 No.2
<P>The surface of concrete pavement needs to be flattened for the smoothness and comfortability of highways. Surface grinding can provide flatness in the hardened concrete surface, and improve adhesion between the existing concrete surface and the subsequent layer. The surface grinding process, however, is executed under hazardous work conditions and the outcome is affected by a machine operator’s skill. Automation of this process can provide a hazard-free work environment and increase the quality of the ground surface. This paper presents an application of an automated concrete surface grinding machine that an operator can remotely control with computer assistance. A combination of hardware and software technologies was applied to prototype automated functions of the machine. Field tests demonstrated that remote control of concrete surface grinding is feasible and can be utilized as a semi-automated scheme on actual construction sites.</P>
Creation of Robust Design Alternatives for Temporary Construction in Value Engineering
Moon, Sungwoo,Choi, Eungi,Hong, Soonheon American Society of Civil Engineers 2016 Journal of construction engineering and management Vol.142 No.3
<P>A temporary structure serves mainly to protect permanent building structures from the natural environment during the construction operation. When exposed to the natural environment, a temporary structure should effectively resist the variations in external factors that exist at construction sites. The objective of this paper is to provide a methodology for creating robust design alternatives for temporary construction in value engineering (VE). A combined effort is presented by integrating the problem-solving principles of theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) in conjunction with robust design. In this approach, the design parameters are planned to minimize the impact of external factors on the intended design functions of temporary structures; consequently, a new alternative is selected to be more robust to withstand the surrounding site conditions. A case study conducted on a retaining wall and its related temporary structures demonstrated that the creation of robust design alternatives can be achieved by integrating the problem-solving principles with the external factors in robust design. In this research, we quantitatively analyzed people's perception of color differences in the fashion commerce environment between online and offline spaces. Additionally, we analyzed the color factors that influence people's subjective perception of these color differences. For this purpose, display samples and fabric samples representing online and offline environments were produced, and visual color assessment was conducted along with physical color measurement. As a result, we observed a large discrepancy between the actual physical color difference and the people's subjective color difference perception. This was found to be influenced by color factors such as the composition ratio of magenta(M) and black(K) among the CMYK primary colors used in the production of the two types of samples and the Lightness(L*10) and Chroma(C*ab,10) of the display sample. This study proposes a color control method in an online environment that allows consumers to perceive color differences that occur between online and offline environments at a level similar to the actual difference, which increases consumers' positive color satisfaction with fashion e-commerce.
