Effect of Patellar Taping on Quadriceps Muscle of Knee Joint
Sung Eun Lee,Shin Gyun Kim,Sung Hyoun Cho,Yoo Rim Choi,Chang Sook Kim,Sung Joon Kim,Ki San Nam,Gyung Kim 국제물리치료학회 2012 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.3 No.1
This study aims to examine the effect of patellar taping common to patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome on the change of knee joint location. The total number of participants is 12 patients with no pain in their knee. There are three different experiments: no-taping, placebo taping, and patellar taping. After application, they squat on their hams. As a result, both the muscle activity of vastus medialis and that of vastus lateralis increased in placebo taping compared to no-taping, which wasn't statistically significant. However, the muscle activity of vastus medialis and that of vastus lateralis decreased in patellar taping compared to no-taping, which was statistically significant. This suggests that patellar taping causing the lateral attraction of knee joint is more influential to the dynamics of knee joint than skin afferent input in placebo taping. Therefore, patellar taping is effective to change the location of knee joint, affect the muscle activity of quadriceps muscle of thigh, and thus correct the misalignments of the knee joint.

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of mistletoe (Viscum album var. coloratum) growing on Carpinus laxiflora BL. on proliferation and differentiation of HL-60 acute promyelocytic leukemia cells. Aqueous extract and its (NH₄)₂SO₄ saturated fractions of the mistletoe exhibited potent anti-proliferation activity against HL-60 cells. Moreover, when HL-60 cells were treated with 0~30% and 30~70% (NH₄)₂SO₄ saturated fractions of the mistletoe, HL-60 expressed CD 66b or CD 14 cell surface antigens and showed activity to reduce nitroblue tetrazolium, indicating that mistletoe induces the differentiation of HL-60 into granulocytes or monocytes. To understand how mistletoe induces the differentiation, we investigated the expression of molecules for modulating the proliferation and differentiation of leukemia cells, such as c-Myc and myeloblastin. The 0~30% (NH₄)₂SO₄ saturated fraction of the mistletoe reduced the mRNA levels of c-Myc and myeloblastin in a time-dependent manner. The results indicate that the mistletoe induces the differentiation of HL-60 cells via the decrease of c-Myc and myeloblastin expressions. Thus, it is suggested that mistletoe has a therapeutic potential for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Objective: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in pregnancy is rare. It is believed that the changes of hormone levels may increase thrombogenic risk and interrupt cochlear microcirculation, causing the development of sudden deafness in pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and to evaluate the risk factors associated with SSNHL during pregnancy. Methods: We enrolled 401,470 Korean women who had delivery between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2014 including 459 women with SSNHL. And we had undergone a national health screening examination through the National Health Insurance Corporation. Results: We evaluated the risk factors between 459 women with SSNHL in pregnancy and 401,011 without SSNHL. There were no statistically significant differences in the maternal age, parity, method of delivery, and gestational age at delivery. There were no differences in BMI, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, and cholesterol level between the two groups. After the adjustment of maternal age on multivariate analysis, SSNHL in pregnancy did not increase the risk for gestational hypertension, preterm birth less than 37 weeks gestation, small-for-gestational age, large-for-gestational age, postpartum hemorrhage, placental previa, and placental abruption. Conclusion: SSNHL can occur throughout the pregnancy and is not associated with maternal identified systemic diseases. It also does not increase risks during delivery or adverse perinatal outcome.
The Effect of Pelvic Inclination on Gait Elements and Weight Bearing of Healthy Adults
Sung hyoun Cho,Cheol Yong Kim 국제물리치료학회 2011 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.2 No.2
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the static pelvic inclination and declination in the static standing position on weight bearing rate and gait elements. Fourteen healthy adults in their twenties were participated. Two groups of healthy adults were allocated in this study: above and below the average of pelvic tilt. The correlation between the pelvic inclination, weight bearing rate and gait elements were measured. There was a statistical correlation between the pelvic tilt and step. Also, there was a statistical difference when we compared anterior declination with swing period and posterior declination with step. There was an asymmetric correlation between pelvic tilt and step. However, there was no statistical difference between the groups above and below the average of pelvic tilt. This result indicates that dipper pelvic inclination doesn't affect the asymmetry of step.

Ketene-forming eliminations from C4H3(S)CH2C(O)O-C6H3-2-X-4-NO2 (1) promoted by R2NH in MeCN have been studied kinetically. The reactions are second-order and exhibit Brnsted b = 0.51- 0.62 and |blg| = 0.47-0.53. Hence, an E2 mechanism is evident. The Brnsted b increased from 0.33 to 0.53 and |blg| remained nearly the same by the change of the base-solvent from Bz(i-Pr)NH/Bz(i-Pr)NH2+ in 70mol% MeCN(aq) to Bz(i-Pr)NH-MeCN, indicating a change to a more symmetrical transition state with similar extents of Cb-H and Ca-OAr bond cleavage. When the b-aryl group was changed from thienyl to phenyl in MeCN, the b value increased from 0.53 to 0.73 and |blg| decreased from 0.53 to 0.43. This indicates that the transition state became skewed toward more Cb-H bond breaking with less Ca-OAr bond cleavage. Noteworthy is the greater double bond stabilizing ability of the thienyl group in the ketene-forming transition state.

In this study, we developed a Gd2O2S:Tb screen with a parylene-C-based antireflective (AR) layer and evaluated its optical and X-ray response properties; in particular, we focused on developing an AR coating layer to improve transmission efficiency. The phosphor screen with the parylene-C-based AR layer can be fabricated via screen printing and chemical vapor deposition. In particular, experimental results obtained using the AR layer showed improvements of 1.47% in luminescence intensity, as well as a lower full width at half maximum of 9.40, compared to the case without using the AR layer. We observed that the roughness of the AR layer was higher than that of the phosphor screen; the image resolution improved owing to the narrow distribution of the secondary photons resulting from forward scattering attributable mainly to Mie scattering. These results indicate that parylene-C is suitable for developing AR coating materials to improve exposure efficiency while maintaining resolution in radiography systems. Therefore, we believe that the number of photons would be further increased if the AR layer were utilized in commercial products.
