<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Reactive oxygen species are believed to be the central mediators of beta-cell destruction that leads to type 1 and 2 diabetes, and calcium has been reported to be an important mediator of beta cell death. In the present study, the authors investigated whether Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> plays a role in hydrogen peroxide (H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>)-induced MIN6N8a mouse beta cell death. Treatment with low concentration H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> (50?μM) was found to be sufficient to reduce MIN6N8a cell viability by 55%, largely via apoptosis. However, this H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced cell death was near completely blocked by pretreatment with BAPTA/AM (5?μM), a chelator of intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>. Moreover, the intracellular calcium store channel blockers, such as, xestospongin c and ryanodine, significant protected cells from 50?μM H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced cell death and under extracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-free conditions, 50?μM H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> elicited transient [Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> increases. In addition, pharmacologic inhibitors of calpain, calcineurin, and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II were found to have a protective effect on H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced death. Moreover, H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced apoptotic signals, such as c-JUN N-terminal kinase activation, cytochrome <I>c</I> release, caspase 3 activation, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage were all down-regulated by the intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> chelation. These findings show that [Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> elevation, possibly due to release from intracellular calcium stores and the subsequent activation of Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-mediated apoptotic signals, critically mediates low concentration H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>-induced MIN6N8a cell death. These findings suggest that a breakdown of calcium homeostasis by low level of reactive oxygen species may be involved in beta cell destruction during diabetes development.</P>

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

This paper is concerned with the formulation for the finite element analysis of a 3-dimensional structure, which is composed of spot-welded plates. A spot element is introduced to represent a spot-welded point, which corresponds to an elastic connection infinite element. Since the spot element is a modified one of the 3-dimensional beam element, it has 6-d.o.f. at each nodal point. The shell element used here has 6-d.o.f. at each nodal point including a rotational d.o.f. perpendicular to itself, which can be viewed as the decoupled superposition of membrane and bending elements. The spot element connects two plates attached. The numerical results of the spot welder plate models with one or more spot welding points are as follows. (1) Under the transverse loading, the displacements of the spot welded plate models are in good agreement with those of the plate without spot welding. (2) Under the tensile loading, the displacements of the spot welded plate models are in good agreement with those of the plate without spot welding when the array of the spot welding points is the same direction as the loading direction. (3) Under inplane bonding, the displacements of all the spot welded plate models except one spot plate model are in good agreement with the plate without spot welding.

A 7 years old intact male Maltese dog with masses on the neck region, intraabdominal and popliteal region was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. Neck and popliteal masses were symmetrical. Right neck mass size was 4 cm in width, 3 cm in length and 3 cm in height and left neck mass size was 3.5 cm in width, 3 cm in length and 3 cm in height. This case was diagnosed as the multicentric lymphoma by physical examination, laboratory examination, radiography, ultrasonography, CT, fine needle aspiration and histopathologic examination. The dog followed by treatment with L-CHOP protocol. The dog revealed that complete remission duration(CRD), first remission duration(FRD), second remission duration(SRD) and survival time was 7days, 115days, 99days and 214days, respectively.

Platelet aggregation is the final pathway of acute coronary syndrome such as acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina. Platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa is a membrane receptor for fibrinogen and yon Willebrand factor and it plays an important role in platelet aggregation and in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome. It is known that polymorphism of the gene that encoding platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa(PI^A1/A2) is strongly related to acute coronary syndrome in Caucasian, but not in Koreans. We investigated relationship between platelet glycoprotein llb/Illa gene polymorphism and restenosis of coronary artery after angioplasty in Koreans. Total 371 patients(M=251. F=120) were enrolled. Angioplasty group comprised 143 patients who underwent coronary angioplasty, and in the angioplasty group, restenosis group comprised with the 65 patients who had restenotic lesion over 50% of luminal diameter in follow-up coronary angiography. Normal group comprised 153 patients who had no significant angiographic lesion and variant angina group comprised 75 patients who were positive in ergonovine test. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral arterial blood. To determine the frequency of P1^A1/A2 genotype, polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was done and the product was restricted with Mspl. 3%. agarrose gel electrophoresis showed restriction fragment length polymorphism. Clinical profile and risk factor were also reviewed. Among all 371 patients of study group, genotype of only one patients in restenosis group if is proven to be PI^A1/A2 heterozygote. All patients of normal study group, no restenosis group, and the other patients in restenosis group have an PI^A1 homozygote genotype. In our study, platelet glycoprotein IIb/Illa polymorphism has no relationship with restenosis of the coronary artery after angioplasty in Koreans. But the genotypic frequency of platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa gene polymorphism in Koreans is concordant with that of previous studies.

The photoactivities of colloidal semiconductors ?? which are good photocatalysts for H2 production by visible light radiation were studied. Using DHP(dihexadecylphosphate) and HMP(hexametaphosphate) vesicles as colloidal stabilizer various ?? were in situ generated on the vesicle surface. The photoactivities of the systems approached to that of CdS with Cd2+ increasing and that of ZnS with ?? decreasing. HMP showed better absorbance than DHP but DHP was better than HMP in relative fluorescence intensity. The wavelength showing maximum peaks of fluorescence intensity were 490nm for CdS and 350, 400nm for ZnS.
