유수환(Suhwan Yu),조용상(Yong Sang Cho),조영삼(Young-Sam Cho),손동우(Dongwoo Sohn) 대한기계학회 2017 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2017 No.11

This paper is concerned with microstructure modeling and analysis of porous scaffolds fabricated by the salt-leaching method. To model the pores and their interconnectivity generated by leaching cubic salt particles, packing and compression processes of salt particles are simulated using the discrete element method. Subsequently, finite element meshes of microstructures of pores are generated and the effective diffusivity of porous scaffolds is predicted using the finite element method. From the numerical results, it is demonstrated that the volume fractions and configurations of salt particles affect the effective diffusivity that can represent cell-culture characteristics.

Propofol abuse among healthcare workers: an analysis of criminal cases using the database of the Supreme Court of South Korea’s judgments

        Cho Hye-Yeon,Hwang Yoonbin,Shin SuHwan,Yoon Susie,이호진 대한마취통증의학회 2022 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.75 No.5

Background: Due to its abuse potential, propofol has been classified as a controlled substance since February 2011 in South Korea. Healthcare workers are exposed to propofol abuse considering their easy access to this substance in hospitals. Therefore, we aimed to investigate propofol abuse among healthcare workers through the database of the Supreme Court in South Korea. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed adjudicated criminal cases related to propofol abuse among healthcare workers from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2020, using the database of the Supreme Court of South Korea’s judgments. We collected the clinical characteristics and punishment-related information of healthcare workers who abused propofol. Results: Of the 194 cases collected using the search term ‘propofol,’ 20 were included in the final analysis. The most common healthcare workers who abused propofol were nursing aides (n = 15). Among them, 40% (n = 8) of the defendants had previously been punished for substance abuse, and 35% (n = 7) had a history of psychological disease. Of the defendants, 65% (n = 13) self-administered propofol more than twice, and the median number of self-administrations was three. Except for two, the defendants were sentenced to imprisonment, including suspended sentences, and the median values of their duration of prison and probation were 9 months and 24 months. Conclusions: Despite propofol being strongly regulated as a controlled substance in South Korea, its abuse among healthcare workers remains. Healthcare workers should be vigilant against its abuse among themselves.

Analysis of endotracheal intubation-related judicial precedents in South Korea

        Cho Hye-Yeon,Shin SuHwan,Lee SangJin,Yoon Susie,이호진 대한마취통증의학회 2021 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.74 No.6

Background: Medical malpractice during endotracheal intubation can result in catastrophic complications. However, there are no reports on these severe complications in South Korea. We aimed to investigate the severe complications associated with endotracheal intubation occurring in South Korea, via medicolegal analysis. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the closed judicial precedents regarding complications related to endotracheal intubation lodged between January 1994 and June 2020, using the database of the Supreme Court of Korea. We collected clinical and judicial characteristics from the judgments and analyzed the medical malpractices related to endotracheal intubation. Results: Of 220 potential cases, 63 were included in the final analysis. The most common event location was the operating room (n = 20, 31.7%). All but 3 cases were associated with significant permanent or more severe injury, including 31 deaths. The most common problems were failed or delayed intubation (n = 56, 88.9%). Supraglottic airway device was used in 5.2% (n = 3) cases of delayed or failed intubation. Fifty-one (81%) cases were ruled in favor of the plaintiff in the claims for damages, with a median payment of Korean Won 133,897,845 (38,000,000, 308,538,274). The most common malpractice recognized by the court was that of not attempting an alternative airway technique (n = 32, 50.8%), followed by violation of the duty of explanation (n = 10, 15.9%).Conclusion: Our results could increase physicians’ awareness of the major complications related to endotracheal intubation and help ensure patient safety.

      • ADAR1 and MicroRNA; A Hidden Crosstalk in Cancer

Cho, Charles J.,Myung, Seung-Jae,Chang, Suhwan MDPI 2017 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.18 No.4

The evolution of cancer cells is believed to be dependent on genetic or epigenetic alterations. However, this concept has recently been challenged by another mode of nucleotide alteration, RNA editing, which is frequently up-regulated in cancer. RNA editing is a biochemical process in which either Adenosine or Cytosine is deaminated by a group of RNA editing enzymes including ADAR (Adenosine deaminase; RNA specific) or APOBEC3B (Apolipoprotein B mRNA Editing Enzyme Catalytic Subunit 3B). The result of RNA editing is usually adenosine to inosine (A-to-I) or cytidine to uridine (C-to-U) transition, which can affect protein coding, RNA stability, splicing and microRNA-target interactions. The functional impact of these alterations is largely unclear and is a subject of extensive research. In the present review, we will specifically focus on the influence of ADARs on carcinogenesis via the regulation of microRNA processing and functioning. This follows a brief review of the current knowledge of properties of ADAR enzyme, RNA editing, and microRNA processing.

신수환 ( Suhwan Shin ),최성준 ( Sungjun Choi ),양성규 ( Seong Gyu Yang ),조수익 ( Soo Ick Cho ) 대한피부과학회 2020 대한피부과학회지 Vol.58 No.10

Background: Although the rates of illegal cosmetic procedures performed by beauticians are increasing, there is a dearth of relevant information in the literature regarding these procedures. Objective: This study was aimed to investigate illegal cosmetic procedures that were performed by beauticians with the help of judicial precedents. Methods: The Supreme Court of South Korea’s Written Judgement Management System was searched for judicial precedents regarding illegal cosmetic procedures performed by beauticians. This system included cases that were sentenced in the lower courts, the appellate courts, and the supreme court from the year 1997 to 2019. Results: Twenty-three litigation cases related to these illegal cosmetic procedures were selected. There were 21 criminal cases and two civil cases. Common illegal procedures included tattooing (n=11), use of laser and intense pulsed light device (n=6), administration of intradermal injection (n=3), and application of topical agents (n=2). Two civil cases reported facial deformity and accidental macular damage caused by illegal use of lasers by the beauticians. Conclusion: In this study, illegal cosmetic procedures performed by beauticians were identified. Continuous monitoring of these illegal procedures is necessary as they can cause adverse effects in patients. (Korean J Dermatol 2020;58(10):669∼673)

        Ju Suhwan,Cho Seong-Sik,Kim Jung Il,Ryu Hoje,Kim Hyunjun 대한직업환경의학회 2023 대한직업환경의학회지 Vol.35 No.1

Background: In Korea, little research has focused on the relationship between discrimination in the workplace and sleep health. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between such discriminatory experiences and insomnia, a common sleep disorder, using Korean employees’ data. Methods: This study used data from the 6th Korea Working Conditions Survey. Discrimination experiences due to age, ethnic background, nationality, race, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, educational level, hometown, and employment status were investigated. The Minimal Insomnia Symptom Scale estimated insomnia symptoms. The association between discrimination experience and insomnia symptoms were analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression analysis. Results: Based on experiences of discrimination over the past 12 months, insomnia symptoms were associated with discrimination experience due to religion (odds ratio [OR]: 3.70; 95% confidential interval [CI]: 1.58–8.69), sex (OR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.87–3.37), age (OR: 2.30; 95% CI: 1.88–2.81), hometown (OR: 2.07; 95% CI: 1.44–2.97), employment status (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.37–2.10), and educational level (OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.31–2.14). Furthermore, the prevalence of insomnia symptoms increased with the number of discrimination experiences. Conclusions: In this study, discrimination experiences due to religion, sex, age, hometown, employment status, and educational level were significantly associated with insomnia symptoms. Furthermore, as the number of discrimination experiences increased, so did the prevalence of insomnia. Preventing workplace discrimination may improve workers’ sleep health.

      • An Economic Analysis of Construction Materials Considering the Logistical Cost and An Optimized Routing for Supply&Demand

        Jeongyeon Cho,Sungjin Hong,Suhwan Lim,Jihoon Park,Hojung Lee,Hyunwook Kim,Intai Kim 한국도로학회 2018 한국도로학회 학술대회 발표논문 초록집 Vol.2018 No.05

Recently in Construction field, It has been the big issues to produce an Eco-friendly Construction material and to solve problems about the First grade–Aggregates’ supply&demand. While the Eco-friendly Construction materials which are refurbished and reproduced from construction wastes and industrial by-products have a great deal of effectiveness such as cost or CO2 emission reduction, there is an additional logistical cost due to go through with some processes for recycle such as Intermediary treatments or management and collection of materials. Furthermore, Demand of the First grade-Aggregates is rising and spreading all over the nation for the improvement of Road driving performance, But there is also an additional logistical cost for supply&demand due to the cost of transport growth by sites of construction. In this study, the process and methodology of the new material supply and demand route routings using the Arc Gis Program and the calculation of the available distance through economic analysis are presented. After examining the cost status of construction materials and logistics costs by examining the literature review and related industry, economic feasibility was obtained by comparing the price of general construction materials with the total cost of comparable materials and logistics costs. After an economic analysis, ArcGis3.0 was used to visualize the materials’ supply&demand route and As a result, We can observe the economically secured route from the construction materials’ production plant to where the domestic transportable route and nodes mapped. Throughout the study, the pre-groundwork for an efficient use of the construction materials is able to be prepared and It will be helpful to invigorate supply&demand. In addition to the economic analysis in the future, If the real-time traffic information (traffic volume, speed, environment, etc.) and the performance (structure, functionality, etc.) of each construction materials are reflected, It will be possible to build a decision system for selecting construction materials which meet consumers’ various needs.
