Annexin-1 (ANX1) is an anti-inflammatory protein as well as an important modulator in inflammation. However, the precise action of ANX1 remains unclear. To elucidate the protective effects of ANX1 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced murine macrophage Raw 264.7 cells, we constructed a cell-permeable Tat-ANX1 protein. The transduced Tat-ANX1 protein markedly inhibited the expression of cyclooxygenase-2, production of prostaglandin E2, and generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the cells. Furthermore, transduced Tat-ANX1 protein caused a significant reduction in the activation of nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). The results indicate that Tat-ANX1 inhibits the production of inflammatory response cytokines and enzymes by blocking NF-kB and MAPK. Therefore, Tat-ANX1 protein may be useful as a therapeutic agent against various inflammatory diseases.

Watermelon (2n = 2x = 22) is the economically important fruit crop worldwide. Gummy stem blight (GSB) is one of the most damaging diseases encountered during watermelon cultivation. Plant breeders need sources of resistance that can be incorporated into adapted breeding lines to help control the GSB. We collected 22 accessions previously reported to GSB resistance from USDA-ARS watermelon germplasm collection. The experiment was a randomized complete block with three replications, and five plants per plot. The KACC 40937 isolate was used for evaluation of GSB resistance. The resistant check was PI 189225 and the susceptible check was ‘920533’. Finally, five accessions (PI 500334, PI 500335, PI 482276, PI 482315, PI 482284) were selected for GSB resistance and these were performed to self-pollination four to five times for increasing homozygosity. These accessions would be used for developing commercial varieties resistant to GSB and identification of genes related to GSB resistance.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 2nd most common cause of cancer related death in Korea and well-known malignancy with poor prognosis. Sorafenib is the first-line molecular targeted agent in patients with extra-hepatic spread of HCC. However, complete response is extremely rare in patients treated with sorafenib and the disease control rate is only 43%. We report a 53-year-old man with advanced HCC with pulmonary metastasis who showed complete response by cytotoxic chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cisplatin with relatively tolerable adverse effects after failure of treatment with sorafenib. The frequeney of fasting hyperlipidemia increases in most hypothyroid patients. However, the cause and mechanism of hyperlipidemia in primary hypothyroidism is not known. In this study, the genetic factor of the hyperlipidemia in primary hypothyroidism patients by the apolipoprotein E(Apo E) gene polymorphism was investigated. Apo E gene polymorphism of the 51 primary hypothyroidism patients and healthy control persons was analysed by modified Amplification Refractory Mutation System(ARMS) technique. Concurrently, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol and total T₃, free T₄, TSH were measured by standard laboratory methods. The apo E gene allele and phenotype frequency in hypothyroid patients were similiar with those in healthy control person. The ap E3 allele frequency of hypercholesterolemic group was slightly decreased and the apo E4 allele frequency showed the increasing tendency. The apo E3/3 phenotype of hypercholesterolemic group was decreased and apo E2/4 and apo E3/4 phenotype of hypercholesterolemic group was increased. In conclusion, there was no difference in Apo E polymorphism between hypothyroid patiesnts and healthy control. Apo E polymorphism seemed to be associated with hypercholesterolemia in primary hypothyroidism. Further investigation is needed for the another cnadidate genes and apolipoprotein analysis in primary hypothyroidism and environmental factors.
