        Important main odorous compounds and VOCs(volatile organic compounds) possibly emitted from the Jeon-Ju Industrial Sites were identified and measured in amount through making air sampling over Jeon-Ju Industrial Sites and analyzing them with the sate of the art analytical instrument. Sampling sites were chosen 8 points by considering the industrial characteristics for the 1,2 Industrial Sites and 2 points for the 3 Industrial. Site Sampling times were two times, the first one was March. 2002 - April. 2002, and the second was May. 2002 - July. 2002. Canister sampling units and polyester bags were used to collect 6 liters air samples during 1hour or 3minutes for VOCs and polyester bags were used to sample 10 - 50 liters of air for 3 minutes depending on analytic characteristics of odor compounds. The important main VOCs were measured as acetone, ethyl benzene, n-hexane, m,p-xylene, toluene, M.E.K.(methyl ethyl ketone), isopropanol, ethyl acetate, o-xylene, n-butyl acetate, ethanol, benzene as in order of average concentration for the Industrial Sites. The main odorous compounds were COS, H2S, CS2, MM(methyl mercaptan), form aldehyde, acetaldehyde for the 1,2 Industrial Sites and COS, H2S, form aldehyde, acetaldehyde were measured as main species for the 3 Industrial Site. NH3 was measured as below the detection limit of the instrument. The concentrations of sulfide compounds for the 1,2 Industrial Sites were relatively higher than ones for the 3 Industrial Site. Among aldehydes, form aldehyde, acetaldehyde were detected very highly as 0.1- 1ppm over all the Industrial Sites.

        수리조선 작업장에서의 공기중 석면 노출에 관한 연구

        This paper aims to provide basic data for work environment control, prevention of worker exposure to asbestos and improvement of air quality to protect workers ‘health after measuring the level of airborne asbestos and workers' exposure in a shipbuilding repair businesses. For this study, a total of 27 samples were collected from 27 workers who had been exposed to asbestos during engine, piping, boiler and other manufacturing processes in 'A' Shipbuilding Repair Company in Gyeongnam. This research was conducted from Oct. 1 to 30, 2007 and had the following results: The target group (27 workers) consisted of all men with an average age of 35.9 years and 6.6 years of work on average. Among them, fifteen 15 (55.6%) were smokers. In terms of their duties at work, there were 12 plumbing repair engineers (44.4%), 8 boiler repair engineers (29.6%) and 7 engine engineers (25.9%). The geometric mean concentration of airborne asbestos was 0.004 f/cc. A total of 4 samples exceeded the exposure limit. In particular, three exceeded the legal limit by more than double, which means that some workers have been highly exposed to asbestos. In terms of the concentration of asbestos fibres by work process, plumbing repair was the highest (0.0071 f/cc($0.001{\sim}0.57\;f/cc$)) while boiler was the lowest (0.0015 f/cc($0.001{\sim}0.007\;f/cc$)). Based on this study, proper action needs to be taken as soon as possible to protect workers from the threat of asbestos.

        Rapid Micropropagation by Axillary Buds Cultures of Smilax china

        An efficient method for the rapid propagation of Smilax china from axillary buds was established. Plants with thick leafage were selected from Korea native S. china population. Axillary buds of S. china collected from selected plant and were cultured in various culture media (2MS, MS, 1/2MS, WPM, B5 and SH medium). Shoot was induced from axillary bud on MS basal medium after 4 weeks of culture. 1/2MS medium showed a higher growth rate than those of the others, while the lowest shoot growth was obtained in 2MS medium. Among the sucrose concentrations, 5% sucrose was the optimum level for shoots growth from axillay buds. Among cytokinins, 0.5 mg L -1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) treatment showed the best performance on shoot multiplication, yielding average shoot multiplication forming about 2.4. Rooting was induced directly near the base of the shoot on 1/2MS medium containing with three-auxins α-napthalene acetic acid (NAA), indole acetic acid (IAA) and β-indolebutyric acid (IBA) (0.5 and 1.0 mg L -1 ). The 1.0 mg L -1 IBA treatments induced earliest rooting with maximum of root number and root growth. These rooted plantlets were successfully transferred to pots for 4 weeks hardening process, and were transferred to soil with above 90% survival rate.

        A 4-years old pointer dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with chief compliment of anorexia, exercise intolerance, hemoptysis, coughing and ascites. It was diagnosed as heartworm disease (class 3) by physical and laboratory examination, radiography, ultrasonography and electrocardiography. This dog was undertaken by adulticidal therapy. Normal conditions and good appetite after therapy were observed.

        한국과 일본의 인터넷에서의 기본 소생술 정보의 신뢰성과 정확성 비교

        Purpose: The internet is a vast resource for consumers. The internet is a decentralized, global medium, so quality management of health information is difficult for the lay person. Basic Life Support (BLS) is basic information provided for the lay person in the province of emergency medicine. The writers searched for BLS information on Korean and Japanese Web sites and assessed the quality of that information. Methods: We used the search engine 'Yahoo! Korea' in Korea and 'Yahoo! Japan' in Japan. The search references were 'Basic Life Support' and 'Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The assessment was based on three 'Credibility' and seven 'Content' factors. 'Credibility' factors composed of 'Source', 'Context' and 'Currency'. 'Content' factors composed of six factors of accuracy of six course of BLS and one factor of 'Original Source Stated'. We make our own criteria for each factors. And, If the web site fitted the criteria, we give 1 point, if not, give 0point. So, 'Credibility' factors point is 3 points full mark and 'Content' factors point is 7 points full mark. Results: Eight Korean and fifteen Japanese sites were found as a result of the search. No difference in 'Credibility' factors existed between the two nations' web sites. There was, however, a statistical difference in the 'Content' factors between the two nations' web site. The mean of 'Content' factors points is 3.75 and 5.06 in 7 points full mark, Korean web site and Japanese web site respectively. Conclusion: Improvement in the quality of BLS on internet web sites in needed, especially BLS on 'Recovery position', 'Assessment of circulation', and 'Cardian compression'.

      • Cryoprotective effect of an antifreeze protein purified from <i>Tenebrio molitor</i> larvae on vegetables

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are natural cryoprotectants that reduce the freezing point of water. They bind to the surface of a growing ice crystal and restrict its growth. The objectives of this study were to identify and purify the AFP from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I>, and to evaluate the use of this naturally occurring AFP for treating vegetables before freezing to minimize freeze-thaw damage. The purified <I>T. molitor</I> AFP possessed a structure similar to that of a β-helix. An amide Ι peak was evident at 1635 cm<SUP>−1</SUP> using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, whilst the thermal hysteresis activity of purified <I>T. molitor</I> AFP was around 3.5 °C at 15 mg mL<SUP>−1</SUP>. Cucumber, carrot, zucchini, and onion samples treated with AFP or the control were frozen to measure their breaking force. AFP treated vegetables displayed a higher breaking force than the controls at all temperatures assessed. No change in breaking force was observed in any AFP-treated vegetable stored for 13 days at 0 °C, assuming that the breaking force at day 0 was 100%. In particular, the texture of cucumber was most effectively maintained when treated with AFP. These results indicate the potential value of the AFP from <I>T. molitor</I> larva in inhibiting ice crystal formation and preserving the quality of frozen vegetables.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This is the first report of cryoprotective effect of an antifreeze protein from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I> larvae on vegetables. </LI> <LI> The fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy spectrum peak of antifreeze protein was assigned to helix structures. </LI> <LI> Antifreeze protein retains ice recrystallization inhibition activity. </LI> <LI> Antifreeze protein from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I> larvae treatment has a cryoprotective effect on onion, cucumber, carrot, zucchini texture retention at 4, 0, −2, and −20 °C for 13 days. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Chromium oxide supported on Zr modified alumina for stable and selective propane dehydrogenation in oxygen free moving bed process

        <P>Propane dehydrogenation in oxygen free environment over alumina-supported chromium oxide catalysts with different chromium loading was studied within short time-on-stream range for the fluidized moving bed applications. For this purpose, a series of CrOx/Al2O3 and CrOxar-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared and examined. Increase in the chromium loading resulted in reduction of monochromate species, possibly leading to formation of polychromate species. Further increase of chromium loading led to formation of Cr2O3 species. Accordingly, specific activity of the catalyst decreased with increasing chromium loading. Propane conversion significantly decreased and propylene selectivity increased during an induction period due to the rapid consumption of limited lattice oxygen in the catalyst. Equilibrated and artificially aged catalysts were characterized in order to investigate the factors affecting propylene selectivity and catalyst durability by pore analysis, temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR), temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After an artificial catalyst aging treatment, all catalysts showed reduction in catalytic activity and the most drastic activity decrease was found in the catalyst with the highest loading of 20 wt% Crhi-Al2O3 sample. The activity loss was mainly due to agglomeration of the chromium species, reduction of the surface area, and transformation of Cr6+ species into stable Cr2O3 species. Cr species were agglomerated on the surface of alumina support during the aging treatment and the agglomeration was more pronounced at the high Cr loading. Moreover, Raman spectroscopy and XRD analyses revealed the formation of chromia/alumina solid solution in the catalyst after the aging treatment which also significantly contributed to the activity loss. Contrarily, Zr modified alumina support successfully suppressed the formation of chromia/alumina solid solution phase and substantially improved the catalytic activity after the aging treatment by increasing the dispersion of chromium oxide. Zr-Al2O3 support showed lower catalytic activity toward propylene than Al2O3 support, which also contributed to the higher propylene yield of Cr/Zr-Al2O3. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.</P>
