In this paper, the image binarization method using standard specifications of the vehicle license plate to recognize characters on the plates is proposed. The global binarization method that had a threshold over entire image pixels cannot acuratelly binarize in case that local average brightness are varied to each plates characters regions. The proposed method uses the characters regions in the standard specifications of the korean vehicle license plates as binarization blocks. For installed cameras on national roads and parking areas, the computer simulation results showed average characters recognition rate about 5% higher than the otzu global binarization method.

This paper proposed an extracting algorithm of human facial components for the recognition of facial expressions. First face image is acquired using the Haar-like feature mask from an input image. The face image is divided into two images. One is the upper image including eye and eyebrow. The other is the lower image including mouth and jaw. The extraction of facial components, such as eye and mouth, begins getting eye image and mouth image. Then eigenfaces are produced by the PCA training process with learning images. An eigeneye and an eigenmouth are produced from eigenfaces. Result eye image is obtained by template matching the upper image with the eigeneye, and the mouth image is obtained by template matching the lower image with the eigenmouth. The simulation results show that the proposed method has superior extraction ratio than previous method.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most serious diseases in barley and wheat, as it is usually accompanied by the production of harmful mycotoxins in the grains. To identify FHB-resistant breeding resources, we evaluated 60 elite germplasm accessions of barley (24) and wheat (36) for FHB and mycotoxin accumulation. Assessments were performed in a greenhouse and five heads per accession were inoculated with both Fusarium asiaticum (Fa73, nivalenol producer) and F. graminearum (Fg39, deoxynivalenol producer) strains. While the accessions varied in disease severity and mycotoxin production, four wheat and one barley showed <20% FHB severity repeatedly by both strains. Mycotoxin levels in these accessions ranged up to 3.9 mg/ kg. FHB severity was generally higher in barley than in wheat, and Fa73 was more aggressive in both crops than Fg39. Fg39 itself, however, was more aggressive toward wheat and produced more mycotoxin in wheat than in barley. FHB severity by Fa73 and Fg39 were moderately correlated in both crops (r = 0.57/0.60 in barley and 0.42/0.58 in wheat). FHB severity and toxin production were also correlated in both crops, with a stronger correlation for Fa73 (r = 0.42/0.82 in barley, 0.70 in wheat) than for Fg39.
Effect of Ovarian Extract on Oocyte Maturation and Early Embryonic Development in Pigs

Various factors in the ovary are known to regulate oocyte maturation and hormone secretory functions; however, the effect of ovarian extract (OE) on oocyte maturation and embryonic development in pigs remains unknown. In this study, we first evaluated whether OE supplementation in the in vitro maturation (IVM) medium alters the oocyte maturation capacity by affecting glucose/amino acid metabolites, meiotic maturation, cumulus cell (CC) expansion, and antioxidants. Various OE concentrations (50, 100, 200, 500, and 5000 μg/mL) were included in the IVM medium. Only the oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE exhibited an improved meiotic maturation rate when compared with that of the other groups (non-treated group, 78.6 ± 3.0% vs. 100 μg/mL OE-treated group, 81.6 ± 4.3%); however, the difference was not significant. To observe the changes in glucose and amino acid metabolism in the OE-treated oocytes, we measured the amounts of diverse constituents (glucose, lactate, glutamine, and ammonia) in the IVM medium containing OE. Lactate and ammonia levels in the OE-treated group after 44 h of IVM were higher (p < 0.01) than those in the non-treated group. In addition, the expression of the CC expansion factors (Has2 and Tnfaip6) significantly increased (p < 0.05), whereas the mRNA expression levels of antioxidative enzymes (Sod1, Cat, and Gpx1) significantly diminished (p < 0.05) in the OE-treated group. Moreover, mature oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE demonstrated increased subsequent embryonic development rates after 144 h of IVM. Thus, the addition of OE in IVM mediums may improve oocyte maturation capacity which could enhance antioxidative enzyme activation, energy metabolism, and expression of the CC expansion factors in porcine oocytes.

<P>Herein, we report the formation of multinuclear Ir<SUB>4</SUB>, Ir<SUB>6</SUB>, and Ir<SUB>12</SUB> supramolecular complexes via the bridge-driven self-assembly of tetrazolyl ligands. The synthesis of dimeric half-sandwich Ir units was made by the reaction of half-sandwich Ir units and tetrazolyl ligands in a molar ratio of 1:2. The use of different ligands containing multiple tetrazolyl units resulted in the formation of different Ir supramolecular architectures. The reaction of [Cp*IrCl<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUB>2</SUB>, AgOTf, and 1,2- or 1,3-ditetrazolyl benzene in a molar ratio of 1:3:1 resulted in the formation of rectangular tetranuclear or truncated trigonal pyramidal hexanuclear Ir complexes, respectively. On the other hand, the reaction of [Cp*IrCl<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUB>2</SUB>, AgOTf, and 1,3,5-tritetrazolyl benzene in a molar ratio of 6:18:4 produced a supramolecular dodecanuclear iridium complex. The molecular structure of the complex resembled a truncated tetrahedral structure with a large inner cavity, as determined by X-ray crystallography.</P><P>Tetra-, hexa-, and dodeca-nuclear Ir supramolecules have been synthesized from the bridge-driven self-assemblies of [Cp*IrCl<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUB>2</SUB> and multitetrazolyl benzene in the presence of AgOTf.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Rice can be the major contributor to exposure of inorganic arsenic (iAs). A total of 485 domestic rice (polished rice, n = 368; husked rice, n = 117) samples produced in 2014 were determined for total arsenic (tAs) and As species. The determination of As species was conducted by HPLC-ICP-MS. AsIII was the major detected species. AsV, DMA, and MMA were occurred in lower level in both types of rice. In polished rice, iAs represented 43–91% of tAs: tAs = 0.088 ± 0.021 mg/kg; iAs = 0.060 ± 0.013 mg/kg. In husked rice, iAs ranged from 55% to 91% of tAs; tAs = 0.160 ± 0.042 mg/kg, iAs = 0.114 ± 0.029 mg/kg. The iAs level of polished rice samples was below the current maximum limit of the Chinese and German standard (0.2 mg/kg for inorganic arsenic in milled rice). Also, husked rice samples did not exceed the standard for iAs. Average dietary exposure to iAs from polished rice consumption was calculated as 0.17 ± 0.21 μg/kg·bw/day which was 8.09% level of Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake. Quality of Communication Life in Prelingually Deafened Adults with Cochlear Implant

배경 및 목적: 청각장애인들은 부족한 의사소통 능력으로 인해 인간관계에서 끊임없이 좌절을 경험하고, 사회 적응에 여러 제약을 받아 건청인과 비교하여 상대적으로 낮은 삶의 질을 보인다. 본 연구는 인공와우이식을 받은 선천성 농 성인과 건청 성인 간의 의사소통 관련 삶의 질(quality of communication life, QCL)을 비교하여 QCL의 하위요인별(의사소통 효능감, 자아 존중 및 역할, 일상생활 참여, 의사소통 태도) 차이를 파악하고, 그들의 의사소통 능력(단음절 단어검사의 음소점수, 이음절 단어검사의 음소점수, 문장검사 단어점수, 조음정확도, 수용어휘 점수) 중 QCL을 예측할 수 있는 변인을 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 만 19-39세의 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인 18명과 생활연령을 일치시킨 건청 성인 18명을 대상으로 QCL에 대한 설문을 진행하였고, 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인의 의사소통 능력을 평가하였다. QCL의 하위요인에 따라 집단 간의 유의한 차이가 있는지를 살펴보기 위해 t-검정을 실시하였고, 의사소통 능력과 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인의 QCL 간의 관계를 살펴보기 위해 피어슨 상관분석을 실시하였다. 또한 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인의 QCL에 대한 예측 변인을 알아보고자 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 결과: 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인의 QCL은 건청 성인에 비해 유의하게 낮았고, QCL의 하위요인별 분석에서는 ‘의사소통 효능감’, ‘일상생활 참여’, ‘의사소통 태도’에서 인공와우이식 선천성 농 성인의 점수가 유의하게 낮게 나타났다. 또한, 의사소통 능력 중 듣기능력(단음절, 이음절, 문장)과 조음정확도가 QCL과의 상관을 보였으며, 그 중 이음절 듣기능력이 QCL에 대한 30% 정도의 예측력을 보였다. 논의 및 결론: 인공와우이식을 받은 청각장애인은 성인이 되어서도 듣기능력과 말산출 능력 향상을 위한 중재를 꾸준히 받는 것이 QCL을 향상시키고, 궁극적으로 전반적인 삶의 질을 증진시킬 수 있음을 시사한다. 또한 언어장애전문가는 QCL 측정을 통해 더 효율적인 개별 중재 프로그램을 제공할 수 있는 근거 자료를 확보할 수 있다. Objectives: The present study was designed to compare the quality of communication life (QCL) between prelingually deafened adults with cochlear implants (ACI) and adults with normal-hearing (ANH), seeking to determine the relationship between QCL and communication abilities of ACI while investigating the predictors of QCL. Methods: The QCL scale of 18 ACI and 18 age-matched ANH was measured. Communication abilities of ACI, such as listening, receptive vocabulary and articulation were also evaluated. A t-test was conducted to examine the differences between the groups according to sub-factors of QCL. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between the communication ability and QCL of ACI. Finally, multiple regression analysis was performed to evaluate predictor factors of QCL for ACI. Results: ACI scored significantly lower than ANH on the QCL scale. They also showed significantly lower scores among the sub-factors of QCL: communication efficacy, daily life participation, and communication attitude. Among the communication abilities, listening ability (monosyllabic word, bisyllabic word, sentence) and articulation accuracy were correlated with QCL. Also, bisyllabic word listening ability was significantly correlated with QCL, predicting 30.2% of QCL. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the need to improve QCL of ACI by participating in aural rehabilitation programs and that improving listening ability will have a positive influence on the overall quality of life of adults with cochlear implant.
