      • The Research on the Sustainable growth of Listed Companies in Chinese Steel Industry

        Steel industry is one of the important raw materials industries in China. In the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, steel industry is included in the plan for ten big industries to be adjusted and developed, which shows its important position in the national economy. In the first 10 years of this century, continuous and extraordinary growth is a prominent feature of China's steel industry. Between the year 2000-2010, steel production has rose from 127 million tons to more than 600 million tons, an increase of about 4 times, which built a solid foundation for a big steel country and made China a veritable big country famous for steel production. At the same time, the rapid development of China's steel industry has also resulted in tremendous energy and resource consumption, which influences the industry's sustainable growth and hinder Chinato become a powerful country of iron and steel based on qualitative and quantitative standards. Extensive growth mode, merely pursuing the increase of quantity, is not desirable. It is very important for China to seek a sustainable growth pattern for steel industry. This paper studies sustainable growth of China's steel industry from a financial point of view, which will contribute to systematically analyze the sustainable growth of the listed companies in China, to identify the problems and make more evidence-based, sensible decisions in marketing, finance and manufacturing. Also, the studies can provide timely guidance for the growth strategies of other steel companies which have been listed, to be listed, and other small and medium enterprises to promote their healthy and stable developments. And it will lay a solid foundation for the sustainable development of China's steel industry and plays an important role for China in becoming a powerful country of iron and steel.Based on the theory of enterprises' sustainable development, this essay has made a comparative analysis on typical models of sustainable growth and analyzed the internal and external factors affecting listed companies' sustainable growth. Based on the development status of listed companies in China's steel industry, this essay selected 33 companies in the steel industry listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange before 2006 after removed those having special conditions, such as "ST" companies whose stock exchanges were specially treated because of consecutive losses, and companies experienced a major business restructuring, etc. With the Robert Higgins' sustainable growth model, we tested the sustainable growth of the selected listed companies in the steel industry between 2006-2010 by using Wilcoxon's signed rank test. The empirical results show that the samples have not achieved sustainable growth whether as a whole or separated year by year. We also concluded that there was a increasing gap between the real growth rates and the sustainable growth rates in five years, which indicated that it was very serious for these companies to blindly pursue high-speed growth, and the financial sustainable growth in the steel industry has not got enough attentions in these companies. So it is not optimistic to achieve sustainable growth for listed companies in the steel industry.

        Influences of Solution pH and Redox Potential on the Bioleaching of $LiCoO_2$ from Spent Lithium-ion Batteries

        The influences of solution pH and redox potential on bioleaching of $LiCoO_2$ from spent lithium-ion batteries using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Bioleaching at different initial pH and ferrous ion ($Fe^{2+}$) concentrations were carried out, and electrochemical behavior of $LiCoO_2$ dissolution was examined to study the effect of solution redox potential on the bioleaching process. The results showed maximum cobalt dissolution at initial pH of 1.5 and initial $Fe^{2+}$ concentration of 35 g/L, and cobalt dissolution showed only slight relationship with pH of solution. Nonetheless, there was improvement of cobalt dissolution at higher redox potential. The cyclic voltammograms showed that dissolution rates increase when the solution potentials are higher than 0.4 V, and rapid decrease at 1.3 V. The anodic polarization curves indicated that the corrosion, primary passive, and passivation potentials were 0.420, 0.776 and 0.802 V, respectively.

        Improvement of heat and drought photosynthetic tolerance in wheat by overaccumulation of glycinebetaine

        Within their natural habitat, crops are often subjected to drought and heat stress, which suppress crop growth and decrease crop production. Causing overaccumulation of glycinebetaine (GB) has been used to enhance the crop yield under stress. Here, we investigated the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) photosynthesis to drought, heat stress and their combination with a transgenic wheat line (T6) overaccumulating GB and its wild-type (WT) Shi4185. Drought stress (DS) was imposed by controlling irrigation until the relative water content (RWC) of the flag leaves decreased to between 78 and 82%. Heat stress (HS) was applied by exposing wheat plants to $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. A combination of drought and heat stress was applied by subjecting the drought-stressed plants to a heat stress as above. The results indicated that all stresses decreased photosynthesis, but the combination of drought and heat stress exacerbated the negative effects on photosynthesis more than exposure to drought or heat stress alone. Drought stress decreased the transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs) and intercellular $CO_2$ concentration (Ci), while heat stress increased all of these; the deprivation of water was greater under drought stress than heat stress, but heat stress decreased the antioxidant enzyme activity to a greater extent. Overaccumulated GB could alleviate the decrease of photosynthesis caused by all stresses tested. These suggest that GB induces an increase of osmotic adjustments for drought tolerance, while its improvement of the antioxidative defense system including antioxidative enzymes and antioxidants may be more important for heat tolerance.

      • Meta-analysis of Outcomes Compared between Robotic and Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer

        This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate and compare the outcomes of robotic gastrectomy (RG) and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for treating gastric cancer. A systematic literature search was carried out using the PubMed database, Web of Knowledge, and the Cochrane Library database to obtain comparative studies assessing the safety and efficiency between RG and LG in May, 2013. Data of interest were analyzed by using of Review Manager version 5.2 software (Cochrane Collaboration). A fixed effects model or random effects model was applied according to heterogeneity. Seven papers reporting results that compared robotic gastrectomy with laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer were selected for this meta-analysis. Our metaanalysis included 2,235 patients with gastric cancer, of which 1,473 had undergone laparoscopic gastrectomy, and 762 had received robotic gastrectomy. Compared with laparoscopic gastrectomy, robotic gastrectomy was associated with longer operative time but less blood loss. There were no significant difference in terms of hospital stay, total postoperative complication rate, proximal margin, distal margin, numbers of harvested lymph nodes and mortality rate between robotic gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastrectomy. Our meta-analysis showed that robotic gastrectomy is a safe technique for treating gastric cancer that compares favorably with laparoscopic gastrectomy in short term outcomes. However, the long term outcomes between the two techniques need to be further examined.

        Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Carbon Nanofibers from Immiscible PAN/PVDF Polymer Blends as Electrode Materials

        Most previous work on the preparation of electrode materials has usually used to grind carbon nanofibers and addnon-reactive binders, which lead to limited surface area and lower electrochemical performance in electrode materials. In thisstudy, porous carbon nanofibers were prepared from non-miscible PAN/PVDF polymer blends by electrospinning andcarbonization to obtain electrode materials with high performance and high specific surface area. In the process of preparingelectrode materials, carbon nanofibers can be directly prepared as electrodes with high-performance and flexibility withoutadding any inactive materials, such as polymer binders or electronic conductors. Results showed that PF-C-50 has themaximum specific surface area of 773 m2 g-1 and the specific capacitance as high as 181 F/g at the current density of 0.4 A/gand 134 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g. PF-C-80 exhibits a specific capacitance as high as 156 F/g at the current densityof 0.4 A/g and 117 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g with the smallest IR drop and Rct. The prepared porous carbonnanofiber electrode improves the electrochemical performance and flexibility of the electrode material. These uniquestructures and characteristic materials can be excellent candidates for high-performance flexible electrodes, laying a goodfoundation for wearable devices.

        The Fingerprinting of Huangjinju Powder for Injection on Chinese Patent Medicine by XRD Fourier

        The purpose is to study the identification method of Huangjinju powder for injection and the medicinal materials by the fingerprint off-ray Diffraction Fourier (XRDF). We used the same method on both the studying of Huangjinju and the medicinal materials. Then we selected a few components alignment to compare. We analyzed the data by setting up the deviation d(a) as ±0.05 to calculate the rate of special mark on the sample (Px) and on the patent (P). The special XRDF of Huangjinju[d(a)/(I/I0)] have 5 peaks that have not expressed in medicinal materials. Therefore Px is 22.73%. Flos Trollii Chinensis has 3 special marks and Px is 17.65%. Flos Chrysanthemi Indici has 1 special mark and Px is 3.57%. Its coincided interplanar spacing with the patent is 2.907a. Flos Lonicerae Japonicae has 6 special marks and Px is 23.08%. Its special mark in the patent are 4.95/14 and 4.50/15, respectively. The P is 9.09%. Its coincided interplanar spacing with the patent is 2.910a and 3.05a, respectively. The number of special XRDF mark peaks of baicalin is 9 and Px is 18.37%. Its coincided interplanar spacing with the patent is 2.910a. It has visible mark and specificity adopting XRDF fingerprint to identify Huangjinju and medicinal materials. Establishing the quality standard is a synthetic index that depends both on special marks in the medicinal materials of the patent and on the coincidence peak data.

        Influence of a community of buildings on tornadic wind fields

        To determine tornadic wind loads, the wind pressure, forces and moments induced by tornadoes on civil structures have been studied. However, in most previous studies, only the individual building of interest was included in the wind field, which may be suitable to simulate the case where a tornado strikes rural areas. The statistical data has indicated that tornadoes induce more significant fatalities and property loss when they attack densely populated areas. To simulate this case, all buildings in the community of interest should be included in the wind field. However, this has been rarely studied. To bridge this research gap, this study will systematically investigate the influence of a community of buildings on tornadic wind fields by modeling all buildings in the community into the wind field (designated as “the Community case under tornadic winds”). For comparison, the case in which only a single building is included in the tornadic wind field (designated as “the Single-building case under tornadic winds”) and the case where a community of buildings are included in the equivalent straight-line wind field (designated as “the Community case under straight-line winds”) are also simulated. The results demonstrate that the presence of a number of buildings completely destroys the pattern of regular circular strips in the distribution of tangential velocity and pressure on horizontal planes. Above the roof height, the maximum tangential velocity is lower in the Community case under tornadic winds than that in the Single-building case under tornadic winds because of the higher surface friction in the Community case; below the roof height, greater tangential velocity and pressure are observed in the Community case under tornadic wind fields, and more unfavorable conditions are observed in the Community case under tornadic winds than under the equivalent straight-line winds.

      • Refining and Validating a Two-stage and Web-based Cancer Risk Assessment Tool for Village Doctors in China

        The big gap between efficacy of population level prevention and expectations due to heterogeneity and complexity of cancer etiologic factors calls for selective yet personalized interventions based on effective risk assessment. This paper documents our research protocol aimed at refining and validating a two-stage and web-based cancer risk assessment tool, from a tentative one in use by an ongoing project, capable of identifying individuals at elevated risk for one or more types of the 80% leading cancers in rural China with adequate sensitivity and specificity and featuring low cost, easy application and cultural and technical sensitivity for farmers and village doctors. The protocol adopted a modified population-based case control design using 72, 000 non-patients as controls, 2, 200 cancer patients as cases, and another 600 patients as cases for external validation. Factors taken into account comprised 8 domains including diet and nutrition, risk behaviors, family history, precancerous diseases, related medical procedures, exposure to environment hazards, mood and feelings, physical activities and anthropologic and biologic factors. Modeling stresses explored various methodologies like empirical analysis, logistic regression, neuro-network analysis, decision theory and both internal and external validation using concordance statistics, predictive values, etc..
