<P>Thermoelectric device is a promising next-generation energy solution owing to its capability to transform waste heat into useful electric energy, which can be realized in materials with high electric conductivities and low thermal conductivities. A recently synthesized silicon allotrope of Si<SUB>24</SUB> features highly anisotropic crystal structure with nanometer-sized regular pores. Here, based on first-principles study without any empirical parameter we show that the slightly doped Si<SUB>24</SUB> can provide an order-of-magnitude enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit at room temperature, compared with the cubic diamond phase of silicon. We ascribe the enhancement to the intrinsic nanostructure formed by the nanopore array, which effectively hinders heat conduction while electric conductivity is maintained. This can be a viable option to enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit without further forming an extrinsic nanostructure. In addition, we propose a practical strategy to further diminish the thermal conductivity without affecting electric conductivity by confining rattling guest atoms in the pores.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

We study the effects of oxygen content in indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO) thin films on the output characteristics of IGZO thin-film transistors (TFTs) under high current driving conditions. Output curves were characterized at a high gate-to-source voltage (= 40 V) from both oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor IGZO TFTs. Characterization results showed that the drain current (ID) decreased with an increase in the drain-to-source voltage (VDS) under high-VDS conditions in the oxygen-rich IGZO TFTs, but abruptly increased with VDS in the oxygen-poor IGZO TFTs. From the detailed analysis of the transfer and capacitance-voltage curves obtained after output curve characterization by varying the VDS sweep range, the abnormal behavior of the output curves was mainly attributed to the increased number of trapped electrons within the gate dielectric and that of the doubly ionized oxygen vacancies in IGZO during the output curve characterization at high VDSs in oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor IGZO TFTs, respectively. The abnormality of the output curve was more significant in a wider channel device in both TFTs, which was attributed to the increased device temperature due to the self-heating effects.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Microchannels must have appropriate physical (e.g., shape, size and surface roughness) and chemical (e.g., functional groups and wettability) properties to be used in microfluidic devices. In general, microchannels, which are made of polymeric materials, are produced through a molding process and chemically treated to have proper wettability. However, mold fabrication and chemical treatment require a significant amount of time and cost. In this study, we used a micromilling process to fabricate a microchannel on polymer material. The contact angle on the machined surface was changed according to the wettability model by varying the surface roughness controlled by cutting parameters. By mechanical cutting of the naturally hydrophobic polymer, the contact angle could be physically changed from 76° to 109° by changing cutting parameters without any chemical change.</P>

<P>This study evaluated the prevalence of <I>Eimeria</I> species, particularly <I>E bovis</I>, <I>E zuernii</I> and <I>E auburnensis</I> that are pathogenic to cattle, in faecal samples collected from cattle with diarrhoea reared in the Republic of Korea by using microscopy and PCR. In addition, the prevalence of <I>Eimeria</I> species was analysed according to age, type of cattle, region, season and nature of diarrhoea. Overall, <I>Eimeria</I> species were identified in 279 of the 1261 (22.1 per cent) faecal samples through microscopy, and statistical analysis revealed a lower prevalence in calves aged than three weeks or less and higher prevalence in cattle with haemorrhagic diarrhoea. Of the 279 microscopy-positive samples, <I>E bovis</I>, <I>E zuernii</I> and <I>E auburnensis</I> were identified in 100 (7.9 per cent), 83 (6.6 per cent) and 27 (2.1 per cent) faecal samples, respectively, by using PCR. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to apply PCR for epizootiology of bovine coccidiosis.</P>
상부 견갑하 건 완전파열의 관절경 하 봉합술과 변연절제술의 전향적 비교

목적: 견갑하근 상부의 완전 파열 시 봉합나사를 이용한 파열 부 봉합술과 변연절제술을 비교하여 보고자 한다. 대상 및 방법: 2003년 5월부터 2007년 10월까지 본원에서 견갑하근 상부의 완전 파열에 대해 봉합나사를 이용한 관절경 감시하의 봉합술을 시행한 69예와 변연절제술을 시행한 30예의 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 견갑하근 손상의 범위는 상부 1/3인 경우를 대상으로 하였다. 결과의 판정은 최초 내원 시점과 최종 추시의 UCLA 와 ASES 중 일상생활지수 (ADL)과 통증 점수를 비교하였다. 결과: 1군과 2군 모두 UCLA, ASES score, ASES score 중 통증에 대한 VAS 점수, 5점을 만점으로 한 내 회전 근력평가평가에서 술 전 보다 술 후 결과가 향상되었다. 1군과 2군의 비교에서 술 후 UCLA 및 VAS 점수는 p>0.05로 차이가 없었고, ASES점수 및 내 회전 근력에 대한 평가는 p<0.05로 의미 있는 차이가 있었다. 결론: 견갑하근의 상부 완전파열 시 견갑하근 봉합술은 단순 변연절제술보다 좋은 치료방법으로 고려할 수 있다. Purpose: To evaluate the results from arthroscopic repair versus debridement for full-thickness tears of the upper subscapularis tendon. Materials and Methods: Ninety-nine patient outcomes were evaluated and compared prospectively. Sixty-nine patients with full-thickness tears of the upper subscapularis tendon underwent arthroscopic repair (group I) and thirty patients underwent simple debridement (group II) between May 2003 and October 2007. In all patients, the tear was localized to the superior one third of the upper subscapularis tendon. The results of the treatment were assessed by evaluating the UCLA, ASES, and VAS for pain and internal rotation strength scores before and after the operation. Results: In groups I and II, UCLA, ASES, VAS, and internal rotation muscle power (perfect score = 5) scores were improved after surgery. In comparing group I and group II, the UCLA and VAS scores were not significantly different (p>0.05), while the ASES and internal rotation strength scores were significantly different (p<0.05). Conclusion: The arthroscopic repair of full-thickness tears of the upper subscapularis tendon was a better surgical method than simple debridement.
