      • Challenging Approach to International Relations Studies: The New Shifting Paradigms from Western Theoretical Settings to The East Common Nature

        ( Abdullah Sumrahadi ),( Musa Maliki ) 한국EU학회 2014 Asia-Pacific Journal of EU Studies Vol.12 No.1

This article is aimed to build a common understanding that archaeological discourse in international relations theory is about description of the rise and fall of a discourse practice in any history. The study of international relations is determined by how strong a mainstreaming process from a discourse, particularly from the strongest discourse. In line with this is how to win a battle in the realm of power and knowledge. In this context, we use qualitative approach. One of qualitative approaches to use is discourse analysis or deconstruction method. Some other scholars sometimes call it post-structuralism method. To be specific, this article will utilize the post-structural approach developed by Michel Foucault, a French philosopher. Foucauldian approach here emphasizes the relation between power and knowledge implied in the grand narrative theory of international relations. We will show using a method that international relations theories tend to be particularly the west. After localizing the archeological mainstream in the study of international relations as locally the West discourse, the east positions itself both culturally and philosophically. This is what scholars called Occidentalism. Postcolonial approach is considered more appropriate to look at the context of the study of international relations in the East. It is more sensitive because it can explain power relations theory in the colonial period and power distribution in producing knowledge. In contrast, Western epistemology, including positivism is no less sincere. It tends to perceive everything as if it were natural, positive and value-free in the context of knowledge.
