      • An S-locus receptor-like kinase in plasma membrane interacts with calmodulin in <i>Arabidopsis</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Calmodulin-regulated protein phosphorylation plays a pivotal role in amplifying and diversifying the action of calcium ion. In this study, we identified a calmodulin-binding receptor-like protein kinase (CBRLK1) that was classified into an S-locus RLK family. The plasma membrane localization was determined by the localization of CBRLK1 tagged with a green fluorescence protein. Calmodulin bound specifically to a Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-dependent calmodulin binding domain in the C-terminus of CBRLK1. The bacterially expressed CBRLK1 kinase domain could autophosphorylate and phosphorylates general kinase substrates, such as myelin basic proteins.       • FORREST II 궤양 출혈의 적절한 치료 유용성 : 전향적 무작위 연구

        Objectives : This study is to compare the clinical and cost effectiveness of various pharmacologic therapies with of without endoscopic procedure in the Forrest II ulcer. Methods : Between May 2001 and June 2002, total of 58 Forrest II bleeding activity patients (37 cases of NBVV, 6 adherent blood clots, 9 flat red spot, and 6 flat black spot) with gastric ulcer(32 cases) and duodenal ulcer(26 cases) were analyzed. UGI endoscopy was performed within 12 hours of the first bleeding episodes, and underwent repetitive endoscopy after 48h. All the patients were randomly assigned to receive somatostatin(group I), PPI(omeparzole : group II), only H2 blocker (famotidine, group III), or endoscopic injection therapy followed by famotidine (group IV). We compared with rebleeding rates, changes of ulcer size, and modified estimated costs for 3 day-hospital in four groups respectively. Results : 1) Twelve patients experienced rebleeding(20.7%). 2) The rates of rebleeding were 16.6% (2/12) in group I, 28.6%(4/14) in group II, 5.9%(1/17) in group III, 26.7% in group IV. There was no significant difference in rebleeding rate among the groups, but there was low rebleeding tendency in group III, compared with group II(p=0.087).3)Type of stigmata including non-bleeding visible vessels and adherent clots were associated with an increased rate of recurrent bleeding(p=0.01).4) When modified estimated costs were calculated, group III could be treated at the lowest cost(p<0.05). Conclusion : In Forrest II bleeding ulcer, medical therapy, especially famotidine could be suggested prudently as a proper treatment modality for this lesion, considering the cost-effecti-veness. 목적: 위십이지장의 궤양성 출혈은 대부분 특별한 치료없이 보존적인 치료만으로 지혈된다. 그러나 활동성 출혈이 있는 Forrest II 궤양의 경우는 흔히 내시경적인 치료를 하게 되는데 최근 여러 연구에서 약물치료와 비교 연구가 있었으나 다양한 약물들과 내시경 치료의 효과 및 비용-효용성의 비교는 이루어지지 않았다. 방법: 2001년 5월부터 2002년 6월가지 Forrest II 궤양출혈 환자 68명을 전향적으로 포함시켰고 이중 위암으로 진단된 경우와 내시경의 추적 검사를 거부한 경우 또는 다른 중증의 내과적 질환이 동반된 경우를 제외시켜 58명의 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 대상 환자 58명은 위궤양이 32명이고 십이지장 궤양이 26명으로 비출혈성노출 혈관 37명, 신선 부착 혈괴 6명, 적색반 9명, 그리고 흑색반 6명이었다. 초기 상부 위장관 내시경은 내원 후 12시간 이내에 이루어졌고 추적 검사는 48시간 이후에 시행되었다. 치료는 네 개의 군으로 나누어 무작위로 소마토스타틴 투여군(1군), 프로톤펌프 억제제 투여군 (2군), H₂수용체 차단제 투여군(3군), 그리고 내시경적 지혈제 주사군(4군)으로 치료하였고 각 군의 재출혈 여부, 혈압, 수혈, 궤양의 크기, 급성 출혈 흔적 등을 비교 관찰하였고 입원 3일간의 입원치료비용을 계산하였다. 결과: 1) 재출혈은 12명(20.7%) 에서 발생하였다. 2) 각군에서의 재출혈은 제1군이 16.6%(2/12), 제2군에서 28.6%(4/14), 제3군이 5.9%(1/17), 제4군이 26.7%(4/15)로 각 군의 재출혈 빈도는 차이가 없었으나 제3군에서 제2군에 비해 재출혈이 낮은 경향을 보였다.(p=0.087).3) 재출혈에 영향을 미치는 인자는 노출 현환과 신선 혈괴였다(p=0.01). 4)평균 입원치료 비용은 제3군이 가장 적어 높은 치료 비용-효과를 보였다.(p<0.05).

        Repellent efficacy of essential oils and plant extracts against Tribolium castaneum and Plodia interpunctella

        This study was conducted to investigate the repellent efficacy of essential oils (Origanum vulgare, Pimpinella anisum, and Tanacetum cinerariifolium) and four plant extracts (Agastache rugosa, Capsicum annuum, Citrus reticulata, and Ginkgo biloba) against Tribolium castaneum (adults and larvae) and Plodia interpunctella (larvae). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of carvacrol, anethole, and jasmolin I as the predominant constituent in O. vulgare, P. anisum, and T. cinerariifolium, respectively. Furthermore, ethyl hexopyranoside, 9,12‐octadecadienoic acid, cyclopentanol, and 2‐cresol were identified in A. rugosa, C. annuum, C. reticulata, and G. biloba, respectively. The repellent efficacy of each essential oil, plant extract, and the combination of oils was evaluated using a specially designed cylinder trap for 120 h. Among the three oils, O. vulgare and T. cinerariifolium had greatest repellent efficacy against P. interpunctella larvae. T. cinerariifolium exhibited effective repellence against the adults and larvae of T. castaneum. Therefore, O. vulgare (O) and T. cinerariifolium (T) were selected for further investigation of combined effects. Two essential oils were mixed in three different ratios of OT1 (1:3), OT2 (1:1), and OT3 (3:1). The repellent efficacies of OT1 and OT2 against the adults of T. castaneum were significantly greater than that of OT3. OT1 was effective against the larvae of T. castaneum, whereas OT2 was effective against the larvae of P. interpunctella. OT1 enhanced the repellent efficacy by approximately five times against larvae of T. castaneum, compared with that of T. cinerariifolium. Overall, OT1 was selected as the best repellent substance against all the tested insects.

        New polymorphic microsatellite markers in the Korean mi-iuy croaker, $Miichthys$ $miiuy$, and their application to the genetic characterization of wild and farmed populations

        Eighteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for the Korean mi-iuy croaker ($Miichthys$ $miiuy$, Perciformes, Sciaenidae), and allelic variability was compared between a wild population in Mokpo, Korea, and a hatchery population in Tongyeong, Korea. All loci were amplified readily and demonstrated allelic variability, with the number of alleles ranging from 5 to 37 in the wild population, and from 4 to 12 in the farmed population. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated, respectively, to be 0.74 and 0.78 in the hatchery population samples, and 0.79 and 0.86 in the wild samples. These results indicate lower genetic variability in the hatchery population compared with the wild population, and significant genetic differentiation between the wild population and the hatchery samples ($F_{ST}$=0.058, P<0.001). These microsatellite loci may be valuable for future population genetic studies, monitoring changes in the genetic variation within stocks in a commercial breeding program, conservation genetics, and molecular assisted selective breeding of the mi-iuy croaker in the future.

        Edible flower means a flower that is good to eat is subject to either cooking or appetizing. In general, people eat edible flower as raw so that the loss of vitamin and inorganic are minimal. Edible flower is usually utilized as salad material or aromatic, decoration for jelly or cake and solid stuff in soup. Thus, decorating food by edible flower improves flavor, fragrance and appetite. Edible flower serves various purposes both east and west. In Korea, Edible flower is mainly subject to soup, cooked potherbs, frying, tea stuff, brewing and etc, whereas in Japan, its various usage covers cooked potherbs, pickle, sliced raw fish, frying, salad, jelly and decoration. On the other hand, Edible flower is used as numerous salad and tea stuff, condiment, roasting, meat, sweets and desserts in Western Hemisphere.

        낙동강 원수의 생물활성탄 및 오존처리공정에 따른 수질 변화 및 폴리오바이러스의 제거특성

        오존처리는 음용수중의 유해한 미생물을 소독하는 처리기술로 주로 이용되고 있으며, 생물활성탄 처리기술 역시 오염물질 제거를 포함한 음용수 제조과정에 여러 가지 이점을 제공한다. 이글의 병행처리는 원수중의 여러 물질을 제거하는데 효과적인 공정으로 간주되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 낙동강 하류의 매리취수장 원수를 사용하여 생물활성탄 정수처리공정 및 오존에 의한 수질 변화와 함께 폴리오바이러스 제거 효율을 조사하였다. 수질인자들은 BAC 여과를 거치면서 $NH^{+}_{4}-N$등을 포함한 모든 항목들은 거의 제거되는 것으로 나타났다. Pilot-plant를 이용한 정수처리공정별 폴리오바이러스 제거실험에서는 전오존 접촉에 의해 $96.8\%$, 침전단계에서$99.3\%$, 여과단계에서 $99.6\%$의 바이러스가 제거되었으며, 후오존을 거친 BAC 여과수 시료에서는 세포배양법과 ICC-PCR 방법에서 바이러스가 $100\%$ 제거되어짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 오존농도에 의한 폴리오바이러스 제거실험 결과 0.4mg/1에서 5분간 접촉되었을 때는 약 $61.1\%$ 이상이, 0.8mg/1에서 10분 이상 접촉시킨 후에는 바이러스의 $100\% $가 불활성화 되어졌음을 알 수 있었다. Ozonation is a disinfection technique of harmful mi-crobes commonly used in the treatment of drinking water. And Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) treatment also provides numerous benefits for drinking water utilities, including removal of micro- pollutants, improved treatment processes. The multiful-stage ozonation and BAC play roles as effective methods for removing several materials in raw water. Water quality variation in Nak dong river and the removal efficiency of viruses by ozonation-BAC process were investigated on pilot scale. During the period of survey, most of water quality parameters including $NH_{4}^{+}-N$ were highly improved after passing through the BAC. The removal efficiency of poliovirus type III in water treatment process using pilot-plant,$ 99.6\% $ of viruses were removed by pre-ozonation, sedimentation and sand filteration process, $ 100\% $ were removed after in BAC filteration step. In the removal survey of viruses by ozonation, ap-proximately $ 61.1\% $ or polioviruses were inactivated by ozone of 0.4 mg/l within 5 min. and $ 100\% $ were inactivated by ozone of 0.8 mg/l over 10 min.

      • Systematic Review of Heavy Metal Concentrations in Fish and Shellfish in Korea

        Objectives: Heavy metals ingested through the consumption of aquatic products can accumulate in the human body over the long-term and cause various health problems. This study aims to present comprehensive data on the amount of heavy metals found in fish and shellfish in Korea using a systematic review of studies that report on that issue. Methods: The study used the following databases: PubMed, Korean Studies Information Service System, and Research Information Sharing Service. The search terms for PubMed included fish OR shellfish OR seafood AND mercury OR cadmium OR lead OR heavy metal AND Korea. The search terms for Korean Studies Information Service System and Research Information Sharing Service included eoryu sueun, eoryu kadeumyum, eoryu nab, eoryu jung-geumsog, paeryu sueun, paeryu kadeumyum, paeryu nab, paeryu jung-geumsog, eopaeryu sueun, eopaeryu kadeumyum, eopaeryu nab, and eopaeryu jung-geumsog. Results: A total of 32 articles were selected for review. The total mercury, lead, and cadmium concentrations in fish and shellfish reported in each of the articles are summarized, as are the species of fish and shellfish with relatively high concentrations of heavy metals. Total mercury concentrations tended to be higher in predatory fish species, such as sharks, billfishes, and tuna, while lead and cadmium concentrations tended to be higher in shellfish. Conclusion: This paper is the first to report a comprehensive summary of the concentrations of heavy metals in fish and shellfish. This data could be used as evidence to protect Koreans from exposure to heavy metals due to the consumption of highly polluted aquatic products.
