In 2017, Talaromyces variabilis was isolated during a survey of fungal diversity in field soils in Korea. This isolate was described based on its morphological and molecular characteristics and it was identified molecularly using the partial 18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-28S rDNA region and calmodulin (CaM)-encoding gene sequence data. Thus, this study reported morphological and multigene sequence characterization of T. variabilis.

Penicillium pimiteouiense was discovered in South Korea during an investigation of fungal communities in soil collected from the Gyeongsangbuk-do province. In this study, we performed molecular analysis of this fungal isolate using internal transcribed spacer rDNA, β-tubulin, and Calmodulin gene sequences. We also performed morphological analysis using five agar media, potato dextrose, oatmeal, malt extract, czapek yeast extract, and yeast extract sucrose. In this study, the molecular and morphological analyses of P. pimiteouiense with detailed descriptions and figures has been carried out.

Three new records of Ascomycota species (Chaetomium acropullum, Phialemonium globosum, Phialemonium atrogriseum) from field soils in Korea are presented in this study. These newly discovered fungal isolates were isolated from field soils from various places across Gyeongnam, Korea in 2016. All the isolates were identified and described based on morphological characteristics, and rDNA internal transcribed spacer and β-tubulin gene sequence data. Morphological features of these fungal species were studied on different agar media: potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full description and illustrations of their morphological characters are provided. These fungal species have not officially been previously reported in Korea.

Nannizziopsis mirabilis (KNU17-67) was isolated from a field soil sample collected from Jejudo in 2017. This fungal isolate was identified and described by its morphological characters and the internal transcribed spacer rDNA gene sequencing. Potato dextrose agar medium was used to study its macro and micromorphology. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed for its precise confirmation as N. mirabilis . This fungal isolate has not officially been reported previously in Korea.

Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB), which is caused by Acidovoraxcitrulli, is a serious threat to watermelongrowers around the world. The present study wasconducted to screen effective rhizobacterial isolatesagainst 35 different A. citrulli isolates and determinetheir efficacy on BFB and growth parameters of watermelon. Two rhizobacterial isolates viz. Paenibacilluspolymyxa (SN-22), Sinomonas atrocyanea (NSB-27) showed high inhibitory activity in the preliminaryscreening and were further evaluated for their effecton BFB and growth parameters of three different watermelonvarieties under greenhouse conditions. Thegreenhouse experiment result revealed that SN-22 andNSB-27 significantly reduced BFB and had significantstimulatory effect on total chlorophyll content, plantheight, total fresh weight and total dry weight comparedto uninoculated plants across the tested threewatermelon varieties. Analysis of the 16S ribosomalRNA (rRNA) sequences revealed that strains SN-22belong to P. polymyxa and NSB-27 to S. atrocyaneawith the bootstrap value of 99% and 98%, respectively. The isolates SN-22 and NSB-27 were tested forantagonistic and PGP traits. The result showed thatthe tested isolates produced siderophore, hydrolyticenzymes (protease and cellulose), chitinase, starch hydrolyticenzymes and they showed phosphate as wellas zinc solubilizing capacity. This is the first report ofP. polymyxa (SN-22) and S. atrocyanea (NSB-27) asbiocontrol-plant growth promoting rhizobacteria onwatermelon.

Knowledge and better understanding of functions of the microbial community are pivotal for crop management. This study was conducted to study bacterial structures including Acidovorax species community structures and diversity from the watermelon cultivated soils in differ- ent regions of South Korea. In this study, soil samples were collected from watermelon cultivation areas from various places of South Korea and microbiome analysis was performed to analyze bacterial communities in- cluding Acidovorax species community. Next generation sequencing (NGS) was performed by extracting genom- ic DNA from 92 soil samples from 8 different provinces using a fast genomic DNA extraction kit. NGS data analysis results revealed that, total, 39,367 operational taxonomic unit (OTU), were obtained. NGS data results revealed that, most dominant phylum in all the soil samples was Proteobacteria (37.3%). In addition, most abundant genus was Acidobacterium (1.8%) in all the samples. In order to analyze species diversity among the collected soil samples, OTUs, community diversity, and Shannon index were measured. Shannon (9.297) and inverse Simpson (0.996) were found to have the highest diversity scores in the greenhouse soil sample of Gyeonggi-do province (GG4). Results from NGS se- quencing suggest that, most of the soil samples consists of similar trend of bacterial community and diversity. Environmental factors play a key role in shaping the bacterial community and diversity. In order to address this statement, further correlation analysis between soil physical and chemical parameters with dominant bacterial community will be carried out to observe their interactions.

Two new fungal species of the genus Talaromyces, Talaromyces purpurogenus and Talaromyces trachyspermus from the Trichocomaceae family, were recovered during an investigation of fungal communities in soil collected from the Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do provinces of Korea. These two species have not been previously officially reported from Korea. In this study, detailed descriptions of internal transcribed spacer rDNA and beta-tubulin gene regions of these two fungi are presented. Morphological features of the two fungi in five agar media, potato dextrose, oatmeal, malt extract, czapek yeast extract, and yeast extract sucrose, are also reported. The species were identified on the basis of molecular and morphological analysis, and herein we present data with detailed descriptions and figures.
Westerdykella reniformis: A New Record from Field Soils in Korea
( Mahesh Adhikari ),( Sang Woo Kim ),( Byeong Heon Gwon ),( Han Jun Ju ),( Hyang Burm Lee ),( Youn Su Lee ) 한국균학회 2020 韓國菌學會誌 Vol.48 No.1
During a survey of fungal diversity in different provinces of South Korea in 2017, a new fungal isolate was discovered. This fungal isolate was identified as Westerdykella reniformis, based on its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S ribosomal DNA (28S rDNA) sequence data. To our knowledge, W. reniformis has not previously been reported in South Korea. Thus, in this study, we report a new record of a species from the Dothideomycetes class in Korea, and provide a detailed description with morphological illustrations.
