Serum TSH Level in Healthy Koreans and the Association of TSH with Serum Lipid Concentration and Metabolic Syndrome

Background/Aims: The proper treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism and the normal range of serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration are intensely debated. However, few reports have investigated TSH concentrations in Asian ethnic groups. Therefore, the present study was designed to define the TSH reference range in a Korean population and to investigate the metabolic significance of TSH concentration. Methods: We enrolled patients who underwent medical examination at the CHA Bundang Medical Center. Anthropometric data were evaluated, and serum TSH, free T4, and lipid profiles were assayed. Results: A total of 7,270 subjects were included. Mean TSH concentration of the study population was 1.82 ± 0.95 mU/L, and we observed a sex-related difference in TSH concentration (male, 1.67 ± 0.87 mU/L; female, 2.02 ± 1.01 mU/L; p < 0.01). When the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles were calculated, 95% TSH reference limits were 0.52-4.29 mU/L. TSH concentration was higher in elderly subjects, during winter, in postmenopausal women, and in obese males. Moreover, TSH showed significantly positive correlations with serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol regardless of sex, age, season, obesity, or menopausal status (all p < 0.01). Finally, TSH concentration was positively related to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: We demonstrated the association between TSH concentration within the normal reference range and serum lipid levels. TSH concentration varies according to sex, age, season, and body mass index (only in males). Moreover, high normal TSH levels were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome, which may be of importance when evaluating subjects with high normal TSH concentration.

Antimutagenic Effects of Ginsenoside Rb$_1$, Rg$_1$ in the CHO-K1 Cells by Benzo[a]pyrene with Chromosomal Aberration Test and Comet Assay

The usage and types of chemicals are advancing, specializing, large-scaled increasing, and new chemical exposed workers are concerning to occupational disease. The generation of reactive oxygen in the body from carcinogen, mutation and DNA damage in cancer is protected by natural antioxidants (phytochemicals) with antimutagenic effect. There were many reports of ginsenoside Rb$_1$, Rg$_1$ grievances of the genetic mutation to suppress the effect confirm the genetic toxicity test with chromosomal aberration test and the Comet (SCGE) assay confirmed the suppression effect occurring chromosomal DNA damage. We had wanted to evaluate the compatibility and sensitivity between the chromosomal aberration (CA) test and the Comet assay. We used the CA test and Comet assay to evaluate the anti-genotoxicity of ginsenoside Rb$_1$ and Rg$_1$, in CHO-K1 (Chinese hamster ovary fibroblast) cell in vitro, composed negative control (solvent), positive control (benzo[a]pyrene), test group (carcinogen+variety concentration of ginsenoside) group. The positive control was benzo[a]pyrene (50 $\mu$M), well-known carcinogen, and the negative control was the 1 % DMSO solvent. The test group was a variety concentration of ginsenoside Rb$_1$, Rg$_1$ with 10$^{-8}$%, 10$^{-6}$%, 10$^{-4}$%, 10$^{-2}$%, 1%, 10%. In chromo-somal aberration test, we measured the number of cells with abnormally structured chromosome. In Comet assay, the Olive tail moment (OTM) and Tail length (TL) values were measured. The ratio of cell proliferation was increased 8.3% in 10$^{-8}$%, 10$^{-6}$%, 10$^{-4}$%, 10$^{-2}$%, 1%, 10% Rb$_1$ treated groups, and increased 10.4% in 10$^{-10}$%, 10$^{-8}$%, 10$^{-6}$%, 10$^{-4}$%, 10$^{-2}$%, 1% Rg$_1$ treated groups. In the CA test, the number of chromosomal aberration was decreased all the Rb$_1$ and Rg$_1$ treated groups. In the Comet assay, the OTM values were decreased in all the Rb$_1$ and Rg$_1$ treated groups. To evaluate the compatibility between CA and Comet assay, we compared the reducing ratio of chromosomal abnormalities with its OTM values, it was identified the antimutagenicity of ginsenoside, but it was more sensitive the CA test than the Comet assay. Ginsenoside Rb$_1$ and Rg$_1$ significantly decrease the number of cells with chromosomal aberration, and decrease the extent of DNA migration. Therefore, ginsenoside Rb$_1$, Rg$_1$ are thought as an antioxidant phytochemicals to protect mutagenicity. The in vitro Comet assay seems to be less sensitive than the in vitro chromosomal aberration test.

Iridology, developed more than 100 years ago, is the diagnosis of medical conditions through noting irregularities of the pigmentation in the iris The purpose of this study is to compare interrelation between CVA, hypertension family history and cardio-renal connective tissue in Iris Constitution through iris constitution examination. The subjects consist of 114 patients who were examined in Iris Constitution at Chonju Oriental Medicine Hospital attached to Wonkwang Univ. from September. 1St. 2000 to August. 31th. 2002. 1. In the distribution of Iris Constitution, among of 79cases, There are neurogenic type 13cases, abdominal connective tissue weakness constitution 31 cases, cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution 6 cases, cholesterol 7 cases and others 22 case in control group. 2. There are familial history of CVA and hypertention 32 cases, no familial history of CVA and hypertention1 3 cases, in 35cases of experimental group. These results imply that there is meaningfulness of interrelation between cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution and. CVA, hypertention.

With a view to examining the habit and method in which old people maintain and improve their health, we consulted 551 men and 444 women who were over 65 years old, and concluded as follows: 1. Habit of eating It's been revealed that most of the old people keep a regular eating hour, control the quantity of meal or eat a little food, and prefer vegetables to meat. 2. Mental health Old people feel the necessity for mental health and most of them (about 80%) keep good mental health without becoming pessimistic. Their chief concenrs have turned out to be about their sons and daughters and their own health and finance. 3. Managing Good Health It has been revelaed that old people do not possess any special kind of secret to keep good health but taking plenty of rest, regular meal, and proper exercise, and many of them (about 60%) have been shown to eat invigorant food that they can easily get around their living area. 4. Physical Functions It has been revealed that many old people are conscious of some symptoms about their parts of body and about to percent of them suffers from neuralgia. Some measures like medical aid especially for old people need to be taken as soon as possible. As we have found that the health-keeping method of old people consists plenty of rest, proper exercise, and appropriate nutrition, we can conclude that the recreatonal and culture facilities and programs for keeping old people in good health should be developed. It is also necessary to study food that contribute to their health and develop ways to get rid of the stresses to which they are exposed in their daily life. Presides, it is natural that government found an administrative department to deal with these matters effectively.

A successful treatment of infants and children with congenital heart defects depends upon several factors: diagnosis must be accurate, the operative technique, including techniques of perfusion and myocardial preservation, must be suited to the needs of patients and intensive cares, including accurate anesthesia, must be applied through all stages of investigation and treatment, i.e. before, during and after the operation. Recently we performed a open heart surgery successfully for a six-years old girl who had suffered from frequent upper respiratory tract infection and mild to moderate exertional dyspnea with congenital heart defects (ventricular septal defect, Kirklin type II, with patent foramen ovale). The operation and postoperative course were very smooth. And now we report this with review of literatures.

Background: Abnormality of lingual muscles is clinically common. But its exact clinical assessment is quite difficult. Evaluation of motor power of the lingual muscles and their neural pathway is limited because of anatomical inaccessibility and individual variation of subjective symptoms. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the human motor cortex is a non-invasive tool to assess the functional integrity of the fast conducting central motor pathways and electrical stimulation of lingual nerve is a conventional method of peripheral nerve conduction. Therefore both study will be helpful to understanding of pathophysiology of lingual abnormality. Until now there is no such report in Korea. This study was conducted to acquire the easier method and normal control values of Korean subjects. Method: We recorded the motor responses from the lingual muscles of 32 healthy subjects (22 men, 10 women) by focal cortical TMS with a circular coil. Motor potentials were recorded by means of surface electrodes applied on the both side of the tongue, following TMS several centimeters lateral from the vertex and parietooccipital cortex and peripheral electrical stimulation of the 12th cranial nerve at the lateral 1/3 point of the line between the midline and angle of mandible. Results: During moderate motor activation, majority of maximal motor response were obtained 4-6cm lateral to the vertex with similar latencies. And the responses from magnetic stimulation of the intracranial segment of hypoglossal nerve were discarded because of difficulty to obtain and unsatisfactory reproducibility. The latency of motor evoked potentials in right cortical stimulation was 10.08 ± 1.17 msec and in left stimulation 10.04 ± 1.32 msec. The amplitudes in right 2.15 ± 1.02, left 2.09 ± 1.11 mV. The latencies electric hypoglossal nerve stimulation were 2.42 ± 0.34 in right, 2.49 ± 0.35 msec in left side. The amplitudes were 2.90 ± 2.37 in right, 2.43 ± 1.86 mV in left side. Central conduction times as calculated by subtracting the response latencies obtained by magnetic and electric stimulation are right 7.65 ± 1.19, left 7.55 ± 1.35 msec. There was no significant difference between man and woman, Conclusion: The method may be efficient, noninvasive, painless, and easy reproduced. With more extensive application to various neurological disorders, it comes close to being an ideal clinical conduction study technique for this cranial nerve.

We develope a discrete event, object­oriented, distributed and web­based simulation environment in Java, and this allows simulations to be incorporated into web and run in various clients distributedly. We integrated traditional optimistic time­warp strategy and web­based simulation into a powerful simulation modeling class library which is based on distributive characteristics of Web, RMI remote call and object­oriented environments of Java. Simulation library supports reuse, design and implementation of simulation models, and thus permits the creation of simulation programs as Java applets. We validate the simulation environment by applying it to simulating ATM switches.

Amylodextrin과 Acrylonitrile 및 Styrene의 Graft共重合

Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile(AN) and styrene(Sty)onto amylodextrin(AD) was carried out using ceric ammonium nitrate(CAN) as initiator under a variety of condition. The graft efficiency of PSty-AD increased by increasing CAN concentration from 0.001mol/1 to 0.0028mol/1, however, at higher CAN concentration(i.e., up to 0.004mol/1.) it decreased. In case of PAN-AD, the efficiency increased with increase in CAN concentration even at higher level. Increasing the AN concentration from 1% to 8% caused a significant enhancement in grafting. The same held true for raising the copolymerization temperature within the range of 25℃-50℃. The graft efficiency of PAN-AD increased by increasing AN concentration, while that of PSty-AD only increased by increasing Sty concentration from 0.5mol/1 to 3.0mol/1. The grafting reaction proceeded initially at a fast rate and decreased with time. The grafted polymers showed increased crystallinity and much lower water solubility as compared with AD. Furthermore the grafted polymers showed no reaction with iodine tincture

This research is to offer the managers of Health Club User's of sports centers a new perspective for sports marketing strategy by verifying what kind of factors most affect the sorts Users and let them use those facilities through Using a demonstrative analysis. For this purpose, this research for mulated a conceptual model by the related studies hitherto and has reached the suitable degree of this research model by using path analysis. Based on the model, 1 presented a hypothesis that "material service(X1), human service(X2, X3), and systematic service(X4, X5), would affect the post-purchase evaluation(Y)," and verified it by the path analysis. To verity the hypothesis mentioned above, I made a pilot study on the 100 users of "K" sports facilities which are thought to be one of the best facilities in Taegu, and made the main research with 200 questionaire sheets distributed among the sports facility users in every zone of Taegu. The 157 effective answers carefully chosen among the returned materials were analyzed by PC 'SAS' and 'LISREL 8W' package. The result of this answers is Cronbach 'α=.7093~.9026. Though this procedure and method, I gained the following results. 1) The study model is of great value. The independent variables including material service(fundamental facilities), human service(service of sports leaders and that of facility personnels) and systematic service(service by system-convenient accessibility to sports facilities) give a significant effect to the post-purchase evaluation. The value of each process is above the general standard, so all the hypothesis was adopted and the value of the model aptitude(GFI) is so high 0.93 that the model proved to be an excellent one. 2) The independent variables-fundamental facilities, services of sports leaders and facility personnels, the accessibility to facilities-make a remarkable on the subordinate variables in the study model of "the post-purchase evaluation".
