Double primary cancers are two independently developed cancers in an individual. There have been some reports on double primary cancer since Billroth reported it for the first time in 1879. Double primary cancer of the stomach and esophagus has been revealed a very low incidence worldwide. The incidence of an esophageal cancer with another primary cancer is reported to be 9.5∼27%, but double primary cancers in the esophagus and stomach have been rarely reported to our knowledge. In this study, we present here a case of double primary esophageal and stomach cancer in a 66-year-old man because of progressive dysphagia.

Airborne dust emission among construction industry place of work that locate on Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi province of 4 processes (a plaster, cutting, hammer drill, concrete grinding) were analyzed. Work did in state that a worker does not exist except measurer as well as is not attained to control group. Investigation period did for 2 months from October to November. It measured 15 times by each process by personal air sampling method that is direct-reading particulate matter measurement device(digital dust indicator). When a plaster work, the dust was class 3 particulate matter, and geometric mean is 2.14㎎/m³, and occasion that exceed 10㎎/m³ that is threshold limit value was 13.3%. Control group was 0.35㎎/m³. plaster work was statisically difference higher than the control group (p<0.001). It was not significant difference between fixed type cutting machine work (0.96㎎/m³) and control group. It were not exceeded for threshold limit value. Geometric mean was 10.44㎎/m³ at movable type cutting machine process. Threshold limit value of this process was exceeded 53% and concentration of total dust was significantly higher than control group (p<0.001). Geometric mean was 3.22㎎/m³ at diameter 13.45㎜ drill work among hammer drill work and all cases not exceeded for threshold limit value, but it was significantly higher than control group(p<0.001). When work diameter 6.5㎜ drill, geometric mean was 4.06㎎/m³ and exceeded for threshold limit value was 13.3%, it was significantly higher than that of control group (p<0.001). It showed higher concentration of dust by diameter is smaller drilling. All 15cases exceeded threshold limit value at concrete grinding work, geometric mean was 78.38㎎/m³, and it was significantly higher than that of control group (p<0.001). As a result of above, countermeasure preparation that concentration of total dust by each process in construction workplace was specially required because exceeded threshold limit value of working environment more than 50% at process of concrete grinding work and movable type cutting machine.

<P>Coniferyl aldehyde (1) is previously reported as a potent inducer of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1). Here, we further examined the active pharmacophore of 1 for activation of HSF1 using the derivatives coniferyl alcohol (2), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylpropanal (3), and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylpropanol (4). Both 1 and 2 resulted in increased survival days after a lethal radiation (IR) dose. The decrease in bone marrow (BM) cellularity and Ki67-positive BM cells by IR was also significantly restored by 1 or 2 in mice. These results suggested that the vinyl moiety of 1 and 2 is necessary for inducing HSF1, which may be useful for developing small molecules for cytoprotection of normal cells against damage by cytotoxic drugs and radiation.</P>

The main purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of maternal control strategies on the relationship between preschoolers` temperament and compliance/noncompliance. A total of 125 mothers with preschoolers aged 3 and 4 years participated in this study. Preschoolers` temperament was reported by mothers. Maternal control strategies and preschoolers` compliance/noncompliance were observed in the laboratory using a clean-up task. There were four major findings. First, preschoolers with higher levels of activity exhibited less compliance, and preschoolers with higher levels of adaptability and activity displayed more noncompliance. Second, preschoolers whose mothers used fewer commands and more compliments displayed more compliance and less noncompliance. Third, mothers who rated their children higher in activity level used more commands with their children. Finally, the use of maternal commands mediated the association between preschoolers` activity level and compliance/noncompliance. When preschoolers` activity level and maternal control strategies were considered together to predict preschoolers` compliance/noncompliance, the relationship between activity level and compliance/noncompliance became nonsignificant. These findings suggest that the effects of temperament on compliance/noncompliance are indirect through maternal control strategies.

Cholestatic liver cirrhosis (CLC) eventually proceeds to end-stage liver failure by mediating overwhelming deposition of collagen, which is produced by activated interstitial myofibroblasts. Although the beneficial effects of Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) on various diseases are well-known, its therapeutic effect and possible underlying mechanism on interstitial fibrosis associated with CLC are not elucidated. This study was designed to assess the protective effects of RVS and its possible underlying mechanisms in rat models of CLC established by bile duct ligation (BDL). We demonstrated that BDL markedly elevated the serological parameters such as aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, total bilirubin, and direct bilirubin, all of which were significantly attenuated by the daily uptake of RVS (2 mg/kg/day) for 28 days (14 days before and after operation) via intragastric route. We observed that BDL drastically induced the deterioration of liver histoarchitecture and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM), both of which were significantly attenuated by RVS. In addition, we revealed that RVS inhibited BDL-induced proliferation and activation of interstitial myofibroblasts, a highly suggestive cell type for ECM production, as shown by immunohistochemical and semi-quantitative detection of a-smooth muscle actin and vimentin. Finally, we demonstrated that the anti-fibrotic effect of RVS was associated with the inactivation of Smad3, the key downstream target of a major fibrogenic cytokine, i.e., transforming growth factor b (TGF-b). Simultaneously, we also found that RVS reciprocally increased the expression of Smad7, a negative regulatory protein of the TGF-b/Smad3 pathway. Taken together, these results suggested that RVS has a therapeutic effect on CLC, and these effects are, at least partly, due to the inhibition of liver fibrosis by the downregulation of Smad3 and upregulation of Smad7.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Development of effective vaccines against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses is a global public health priority. Considering the difficulty in predicting HPAI H5N1 pandemic strains, one strategy used in their design includes the development of formulations with the capacity of eliciting broad cross-protective immunity against multiple viral antigens. To this end we constructed a replication-defective recombinant adenovirus-based avian influenza virus vaccine (rAdv-AI) expressing the codon-optimized M2eX–HA–hCD40L and the M1-M2 fusion genes from HPAI H5N1 human isolate. Although there were no significant differences in the systemic immune responses observed between the intramuscular prime-intramuscular boost regimen (IM/IM) and the intranasal prime-intramuscular boost regimen (IN/IM), IN/IM induced more potent CD8<SUP>+</SUP> T cell and antibody responses at mucosal sites than the IM/IM vaccination, resulting in more effective protection against lethal H5N2 avian influenza (AI) virus challenge. These findings suggest that the strategies used to induce multi-antigen-targeted mucosal immunity, such as IN/IM delivery of rAdv-AI, may be a promising approach for developing broad protective vaccines that may be more effective against the new HPAI pandemic strains.</P>

The purpose of this study was to characterize background mass concentration of PM₁?, PM2.5 and metallic composition from June 2004 to June 2005 in comparison with Seoul and Asan city. The results were as follows: 1. Annual mean of PM₁₂ concentrations in Seoul and Asan were 56.95(±25.63)㎍/㎥, 57.02(±27.22)㎍/㎥ respectly. 2. Annual mean of PM2.5 concentrations in Seoul and Asan were 46.97(±40.36)㎍/㎥, 42.16(±21.79)㎍/㎥ respectly. 3. The average PM2.5/PM₁? ratio was 0.82 in Seoul and 0.74 in Asan city. 4. The concentration of PM₁?, PM2.5 were the highest in spring and the lowest in summer. Asan was higher than Seoul in spring and summer. 5. The results showed that average PM₁? composition order as Si>Fe>Pb>Zn>]Mn in Seoul and Si>Fe>Zn>Pb>Mn in Asan. The concentration of metals in PM₁? of Seoul that Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn were high in spring and Zn was low in Fall. Fe, Mn were high in spring of Asan. 6. The results showed that average PM2.5 composition order as Si>Pb>Fe>Zn>Mn in Seoul and Si>Fe>Pb>Zn>Cr in Asan. The concentration of metals in PM2.5 of Seoul that Cr was high in spring. 7. The result showed that relation between Cr and Cu, Cu and Fe, Fe and Mn, Mn and Zn, Zn and Si in Seoul, Cr and Zn, Cu and Pb, Zn and Pb, Pb and Mn in Asan. The result showed that PM₁? concentration exceeding 50㎍/㎥(US-EPA Standard) and PM2.5 concentration exceeding 15㎍/㎥(US-EPA Standard). In urban area, the monitoring of PM2.5 permits the anthropogenic sources and the interference of natural sources with respect to PM₁? measurements.

Safety pharmacology studies are conducted to investigated the potential undesirable pharmacodynamic effects of a substance on physiological functions in relation to exposure in the therapeutic range and above. In the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH), the guideline “S7A : Safety Pharmacology Studies for Human Pharmaceuticals” has been developed and reached Step 5 of the ICH process in 2001. Now the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) are going to transfer “The Guideline for General Pharmacology” into “The Guideline for Safety Pharmacology”. Safety pharmacology studies should be performed in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Thus, the present paper reviews the Japanese GLP guidelines for pharmaceuticals to help the conduct and inspection of safety pharmacology studies in compliance with GLP. We also reviewed the ICH guidelines “S7B revised : The Nonclinical Evaluation of the Potential for Delayed Ventricular Repolarization (QT Interval Prolongation) by Human Pharmaceuticals” and “E14 : The Clinical Evaluation of QT/QTc Interval Prolongation and Proarrhythmic Potential for Non-antiarrhythmic Drugs” to apply our drug approval systems.
