      • The Study on Medicinal Flora of Several Uninhabited Islands in Jindo-gun, Chonnam province

        The medicinal plants in 22 unhabited islands of Jindo-gun, Chonnam provincde were investigated from March 2000 to October 2002. The medicinal plants in 22 uninhabited islands of Jindo-gun were consisted 366 taxa; 95 families, 269 genus, 309 species, 52 varieties, 3 forma, and 2 subspecies. Important medicinal plants on survey area were Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, Dendropanax morbifera, Ficus erecta, Farfugium japonicum, Machilus thunbergii, Juniperus chinensis var. procumbens, Dendrobium moniliforme, Pyrrhosia tricuspis, Cinnamomum japonicum, Pittosporum tobira, Kadsura japonica, and Daphniphyllum macropodum, This result can be used as basic information data for medicinal research and the conservation of uninhabited islands.

        유산구균 1370의 수용성 글루캔 형성에 영향을 미치는 인자

        Streptococcus mutans가 치태를 형성할 때, 유산구균 1370(Lactococcus lactis 1370)이 생산하는 수용성 글루캔이 영향을 미친다. 본 연구에서는 여러 인자에 의한 수용성 글루캔 형성 정도를 유산구균 1370 배양 상청액의 흡광도로 측정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 5% 자당이 첨가된 M17 broth에서 유산구균 1370 배양 상청액의 흡광도는 높고 Streptococcus mutans 배양 상청액의 흡광도는 낮았으나, 통계학적인 유의성은 없었다. 2. M17 broth에 10% 자당을 첨가하여 유산구균 1370을 배양할시 배양 상청액의 흡광도는 첨가하지 않을 때보다 높았다(p〈0.05). 배지 pH가 5에서보다 7에서 배양 상청액의 흡광도가 더 높았다(p〈0.05). 3. 32℃, 37℃, 42℃중 37℃에서 배양시 배양 상청액의 흡광도가 가장 높았으나 통계학적인 유의성이 없었고, 호기성 배양시보다 혐기성 배양시 배양 상청액의 흡광도가 더 높았다(p〈0.05). 4. 배지의 CaCl₂농도가 1.0mM에서 (p〈0.05), KCl 농도가 2.5mM에서 (p〈0.05) 배양 상청액의 흡광도가 높았다. 5. M17 broth에 5% 자당을 첨가한 배지에 유산구균 1370을 접종하여 배양한 배양 상청액의 배지를 1:3으로 가한 비커와이어 검사에서 Streptococcus mutans에 의하여 형성된 인공치태 무게는 5.6mg으로 5% 자당을 첨가하지 않을 때의 103.0mg에 비교하여 현저히 감소하였다 (p〈0.05). 이상의 결과를 요약하면 유산구균 1370에 의한 수용성 글루캔의 형성은 자당이 함유된 배지나 세균 증식이 잘 되는 조건에서 증가하였으며, 수용성 글루캔이 Streptococcus mutans에 의한 인공치태 형성을 억제하였다.

        Tracheobronchopathia osteoplastica is a rare disorder of unknown cause characterized by the projection of numerous bony or cartilaginous submucosal nodules into the tracheobronchial lumen with sparing of the posterior membranous portion of tracheobronchial tree. In the past, most of the cases were diagnosed as secondary finding at autopsy. Nowaday, the key component of the evaluation is flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy, which typically demonstrates irregular spicules of subrnucosal bone and cartilage projecting into the tracheobronchial lumen and causing various degrees of airway obstruction. A 45 years old man was visited Sunchon St. Carollo hospital due to discomfort on throat. We saw several nodules just below vocal cord via laryngoscope. The computed tomography revealed multiple small calcified nqdules on trachea and both main bronchi. Pathologic finding of bronchoscopic biopsy showed abnormal proliferation of bony and cartilagious nodules in the tracheal submucosa. These fingdings were consistent with tracheobronchopathia osteoplastica. We report here on a case of tracheobronchopathia osteoplastica with review of literature.

      • 성인 막성신병증의 임상적 고찰

        Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a glomerular disease characterized by diffuse thickening of the glomerular basement membrane without significant mesangial proliferative change and is usually manifested by the nephrotic syndrome. To evaluate the clinical and pathologic characteristics of this disease in adults, we analyzed 65 patients with primary membranous nephropathy who were diagnosed at Department of Internal Medicine, Chungnam National University Hospital from February 1986 to February 2001. The results are as follows: 1) Of total 96 patients with membranous nephropathy, 67.7% was primary MN. Hepatitis B-associated MN and lupus MN were 22.9%, and 9.4%, respectively. Median duration of follow-up was 35.1 months(0.3∼177) in primary MN, 49.6 months(2.5∼103) in lupus MN, and 35.6 months(0.5∼108) in hepatitis B-associated MN. 2) Mean age of the patients with primary MN at the time of diagnosis(43.3 years) was significantly higher than that of lupus MN(30.4 years) and HBV-associated MN(36.2 years). Male to female ratio of primary MN was 1.03:l. 3) At the time of diagnosis, 89.2% of primary MN was presented with nephrotic syndrome. Twenty seven percent of patients showed hypertension. Hematuria was found in 58.5% of primary MN patients. Azotemia was noted in 3.1 %. 4) Global sclerosis, tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis were noted in 39.8, 16.1 and 11.3% of primaty MN, respectively. IgG and C3 were deposited on the glomerular capillary loop in 92.7% and 29% of primary MN patients. There was no significant correlation between the electron microscopic pathologic stage and clinical findings. 5) Of 56 patients with primary MN followed more than 6 months, 50(90.9%) patients were treated with prednisolone, cyclophosphamide or cyclosporin. Complete remission was obtained in 29 patients(51.8%), partial remission in 6 patients(10.7%), and no response in 18 patients(32.1%). Of 6 patients who were not treated with immunosuppressive drugs, 3 patients showed spontaneous complete or partial remission. Three patients who did not show clinical improvement progressed to end-stage renal failure. There were no significant clinical difference including renal pathology at the time of diagnosis between the patients who showed complete or partial remission and patients who did not. In conclusion, it was difficult to predict the long-term prognosis of primary MN at the time of diagnosis, clinically. The response to therapeutic modality would be the most important to predict long-term prognosis of primary MN.

      • Fusobacterium nucleatum의 유황화합물 생성에 영향을 미치는 인자

        Fusobacterium nucleatum, one of the bacteria causing halitosis, produces the volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) such as H2S in the media containing sulfur components, and forms FeS by binding with iron component. The various factors of oral cavity affect the concentration of sulfur compounds produced by Fusobacterium nucleatum. In this study, the effect of nutrients and pH on the production of sulfur compounds by Fusobacterium nucleatum was studied with the following results; 1. The optical density of broth was increased to 0.817±0.032 and 1.297±0.024 by adding 1.0% sodium thiosulfate and 0.05% L-cysteine hydrochloride in the media, respectively. 2. Though the optical density of broth was 0.799 ± 0.032 by adding volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) only in the media, it was increased to 1.775±0.003 and 1.648±0.022 by adding xylitol combined with glucose and fructose, respectively. 3. The concentration of VSC was above 20,000 ppb in the media above pH 5.5. The optical density of broth was still high in the media with L-cysteine hydrochloride of higher concentration, being low in the media of lower pH. 4. The concentration of VSC was high when there was distilled water or saline solution on the media, and their amount was small. These results suggest that the production of sulfur compounds by Fusobacterium nucleatum is inhibited by xylitol and acid.

      • 유산구균 1370의 수용성 글루캔 형성에 영향을 미치는 인자

        The water-soluble glucan prodeced by Lactococcus lactis 1370 affects the formation of dental plaque by Streptococcus mutans. In this study the factors affecting the formation of water-soluble glucan were assessed as the optical density of culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the spectrophotometer. 1. The optical density of culture supernatant was high when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 5% sucrose, while being low in culture supernatant of Streptococcus mutans. 2. The optical density of culture supernatant was higher when Lactococcus lactis 1370 was cultured in M17 broth with 10% sucrose than when being cultured without sucrose (p<0.05), and was higher at pH 7 than pH 5 (p<0.05). 3. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest at 37℃ among 32℃, 37℃ and 42℃, and was higher in the anaerobic incubator than in the aerobic incubator (p<0.05). 4. The optical density of culture supernatant was the highest in the media containing 1.0mM CaCl2 (p<0.05), 2.5mM KCl (p<0.05), and 1.6 mM MgCl2. 5. When Streptococcus mutans was cultured in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth, the mean weight of produced artificial plaque was 103.0 mg on the wire, whereas being significantly reduced to 5.6mg in the media containing a quarter culture supernatant of Lactococcus lactis 1370 grown in M17 broth containing 5% sucrose (p<0.05). These results indicate that the water-soluble glucan is more formed by Lactococcus lactis 1370 in the media containing sucrose or under the adequate conditions for the growth of bacteria, and inhibits the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans.

        수동식 시료채취기를 이용한 사무실 직장인의 이산화질소 노출평가 및 예측 : 한국의 서울과 호주의 브리스베인 비교 연구 Comparative Study of Seoul in Korea and Brisbane in Australia

        Indoor and outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO_2) concentrations were measured and compared with measurements of personal exposures of 95 persons in Seoul, Korea and 57 persons in Brisbane, Australia, respectively. This activity diary was used to determine the impact on NO_2 exposure assessment and microenvironmental model to estimate the personal NO_2 exposure. Most people both Seoul and Brisbane spent their times more than 90% of indoor and more than 50% in home, respectively. Personal NO_2 exposures were significantly associated with indoor NO_2 levels with Person coefficient of 0.70 (p<0.01) and outdoor NO_2 levels with Person coefficient of 0.66 (p<0.01) in Seoul and of 0.51 (p<0.01) and of 0.33 (p<0.05) in Brisbane, respectively. Using microenvironmental model by time weighted average model, personal NO_2 exposures were estimated with NO_2 measurements in indoor home indoor office and outdoor home. Estimated NO_2 measurements were significantly correlated with measured personal Exposures (r = 0.69, p<0.001) in Seoul and in Brisbane (r = 0.66, p<0.001), respectively. Difference between measured and estimated NO_2 exposures by multiple regression analysis was explained that NO_2 levels in near workplace and other outdoors in Seoul (p = 0.023), and in transportation in Brisbane (p = 0.019) affected the personal NO_2 exposures.
