LiveGantt: Interactively Visualizing a Large Manufacturing Schedule

        Jaemin Jo,Jaeseok Huh,Jonghun Park,Bohyoung Kim,Jinwook Seo IEEE 2014 IEEE transactions on visualization and computer gr Vol.20 No.12

In this paper, we introduce LiveGantt as a novel interactive schedule visualization tool that helps users explore highly-concurrent large schedules from various perspectives. Although a Gantt chart is the most common approach to illustrate schedules, currently available Gantt chart visualization tools suffer from limited scalability and lack of interactions. LiveGantt is built with newly designed algorithms and interactions to improve conventional charts with better scalability, explorability, and reschedulability. It employs resource reordering and task aggregation to display the schedules in a scalable way. LiveGantt provides four coordinated views and filtering techniques to help users explore and interact with the schedules in more flexible ways. In addition, LiveGantt is equipped with an efficient rescheduler to allow users to instantaneously modify their schedules based on their scheduling experience in the fields. To assess the usefulness of the application of LiveGantt, we conducted a case study on manufacturing schedule data with four industrial engineering researchers. Participants not only grasped an overview of a schedule but also explored the schedule from multiple perspectives to make enhancements.

Prospective Evaluation of the Clinical Implications of the Tumor Metabolism and Chemotherapy-Related Changes in Advanced Biliary Tract Cancer

        Jo, Jaemin,Kwon, Hyun Woo,Park, Seongyeol,Oh, Do-Youn,Cheon, Gi Jeong,Bang, Yung-Jue Society of Nuclear Medicine 2017 The Journal of nuclear medicine Vol.58 No.8

Tumor metabolism measured by F-18-FDG PET has a diagnostic and prognostic role in several cancers. The clinical implication of tumor metabolism in biliary tract cancer (BTC) has not been studied well. Therefore, we evaluated the prognostic value of tumor metabolism and chemotherapy-related changes in advanced BTC patients. Methods: We prospectively enrolled advanced BTC patients before the initiation of palliative chemotherapy. Using F-18-FDG PET, we assessed the baseline SUVmax and monitored the changes in SUVmax during chemotherapy. We analyzed the associations between SUVmax, and clinicopathologic factors and clinical outcomes. Results: Seventy-five patients were enrolled. All patients received gemcitabine/ cisplatin as first-line chemotherapy. Primary tumor site, histologic differentiation, molecular characteristics, laboratory findings, and disease extent were associated with the metabolic characteristics. The high-metabolism group showed worse survival outcome (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.09, P = 0.001 for progression-free survival; HR = 2.61, P = 0.019 for overall survival [OS]) than the low-metabolism group. The lesser reduction of SUVmax was also associated with worse outcome (HR = 3.35, P = 0.002 for progression-free survival; HR = 1.96, P = 0.082 for OS). When both baseline tumor metabolism and its chemotherapy-related changes were considered, patients with a low metabolism and more reduction in metabolism obtained the best OS (20.7 vs. 6.2 mo, P = 0.013). Conclusion: Tumor metabolic activity and the chemotherapy-related changes in the metabolism are associated with prognosis in advanced BTC patients.

Severe anemia caused by secondary myelofibrosis in a patient with angioimmunoblastic peripheral T-cell lymphoma

Jo, Jaemin,Kang, Jeong Ho Institute for Medical Science 2020 The Journal of Medicine and Life Science Vol.17 No.3

Bone marrow failure, such as aplastic or myelophthisic anemia, can occur due to an underlying lymphoid malignancy and cause life-threatening events. A 58-year-old man diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma had recently visited the emergency department because of an altered level of consciousness caused by acute severe anemia. The laboratory findings were strongly suggestive of bone marrow failure syndrome. Bone marrow examination was immediately performed and, subsequently, dexamethasone was initiated to control the underlying lymphoma. Intravenous immunoglobulin was also administered in combination due to combined immune hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow examination revealed a packed marrow with marked fibrosis and lymphoma involvement. A diagnosis of secondary myelofibrosis related to the underlying lymphoma was made, and sequential combination chemotherapy was introduced despite the presence of severe anemia and thrombocytopenia. After combination chemotherapy, his hematologic profile and underlying lymphoma improved. Better understanding of various hematologic manifestations and knowledge of the rare condition of lymphoma are essential for appropriate diagnostic approaches and treatment.

      • WordlePlus: Expanding Wordle's Use through Natural Interaction and Animation

Jaemin Jo,Bongshin Lee,Jinwook Seo IEEE 2015 IEEE computer graphics and applications Vol.35 No.6

Wordle has been commonly used to summarize texts, with each word size-coded by its frequency of occurrences--the more often a word occurs in texts, the bigger it is. The interactive authoring tool WordlePlus leverages natural interaction and animation to give users more control over wordle development. WordlePlus supports direct manipulation of words with pen and touch interaction. It introduces two-word multitouch manipulation, such as concatenating and grouping two words, and provides pen interaction for adding and deleting words. In addition, WordlePlus employs animation to help users create more dynamic and engaging wordles.

2017 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.55 No.3

In this study, the optimization of extraction parameters (solvent, temperature, time, solvent concentration) for the maximization of polyphenol extraction was performed to produce value-added food and cosmetic additives using a byproduct of coffee extraction process (coffee residue). All of the extraction parameters evaluated in this experiment had significant effects on polyphenol extraction and the results showed the effect of NaOH concentration on the polyphenol production was most significant among tested parameters. Especially, hot water extraction using acid or base was effective rather than hot-water extraction and the addition of 0.1 mol of NaOH increased 1.5 times extraction concentration compared with hot-water extraction using distilled water. It was found that hot-water extraction with NaOH was more effective than hot-water extraction, and 36.5 mg GAE/g DM was obtained under optimum condition of 100 ºC, 2 mol of NaOH and 30 min. This result was 2.9 times higher than that of 12.5 mg GAE/g DM obtained from the hot-water extraction before optimization. Thus, coffee residue could be used for food and cosmetic industry as a high-value additive such as antioxidant.

Vol.19 No.1

Urinary tumors include cancers that commonly occur throughout the population, such as bladder cancer, kidney cancer, ureter cancer, and prostate cancer. The incidence of urological tumors in Korea is increasing. As the treatments of patients with cancer, such as operation, target therapy, immunotherapy, and gene therapy, are being developed, the life expectancy has been increasing. However, significant number of patients experience disease progression despite of existing treatments. Therefore, symptom direct treatment is crucial in oncologic era. Symptoms of patients with cancer vary but pain is one of the most common symptoms. Therefore, proper pain management is essential for the patients to improve the quality of life. Pain in cancer has as many complex pathological and physical characteristics as various tumor types. Both pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions are important to address the full spectrum of cancer pain in patients. Many approaches to pain control, including opioid analgesics, radiation, and interventional care, are included in pain control therapy. Clinicians working with urinary tumors should be familiar with these pain control options. This review is intended to provide practical help to clinicians in treating patients with urological tumors. Updates to current knowledge and concepts of cancer pain management are included.

2017 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.55 No.4

Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has attracted growing interest, as it is an effective method for the rapid extraction of bioactive compounds from plants with a high extraction efficiency comparable to the conventional extraction. In this study, UAE was used for the extraction of polyphenols from lipid extracted microalgae (Tetraselmis KCTC 12236BP) and the effects of five extraction variables on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) were studied. For the optimization of extraction parameters, particle size, solid-to-liquid (L/S) ratio, ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time have been examined as independent variables. All variables exhibited the significant effects on the extraction of TPC and extraction temperature showed the most significant effect among five variables. The optimal extraction conditions were the extraction using mixed particle, S/L ratio of 10%, ethanol concentration of 60%, extraction temperature of 100℃ and extraction time of 30 min, which gave the 8.7 mg GAE/g DW for TPC. Compared with conventional hot-water extraction, TPC extraction under UAE was increased by up to 1.8 fold with same extraction condition. This study showed that UAE under low temperature and short extraction time was proven to be an effective extraction process for TPC production from LEA compared to conventional hot-water extraction process.
