Identifying material parameters that affect magnetic properties of ferromagnets is key to optimize materials better suited for spintronics applications. Here, we propose an effective hole doping method to modulate the magnetic anisotropy of a van der Waals ferromagnet, and explore the physical origin of this effect. Experimental measurements of the doping and thickness dependent magnetic properties of thin Fe3-xGeTe2 show a significant suppression of the magnetic anisotropy with hole doping. From the measured and calculated doping dependent electronic structure, we find that the energy gain by the spin-orbit induced band splitting is reduced by the chemical potential shift associated with hole doping, which in turn reduce the magnetic anisotropy energy. The identified mechanism provides an understanding of the doping induced modulation of magnetic properties in Fe3GeTe2 thin films.

The bioassay-directed isolation of a marine brown alga, Ecklonia cava, afforded four phlorotannin derivatives, eckol (1), 8,8'-bieckol (2), 8,4'''-dieckol (3), and phlorofucofuroeckol A (4). Among these compounds, 2 and 3 exhibited an inhibitory effect an human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease. Specifically, they inhibited the RT more potently than the protease. The inhibitory activity of compound 2 (IC_(50), 0.51 μм) against HIV-1 RT was comparable to that of nevirapine (IC_(50), 0.28 μм), a reference compound. An enzyme kinetic assay showed that this compound inhibited the RNA-dependent DNA synthesis activity of HIV-1 RT noncompetitively against dUTP/dTTP with a K_(i) value of 0.78 μM. With respect to the homopolymeric template/primer, (rA)_(n)(dT)_(15), 8,8'-bieckol (2) displayed an uncompetitive type of inhibition (K_(i), 0.23 μм).

<P>Abstract. To investigate the effect of additional CO2 observations in the Siberia region on the Asian and global surface CO2 flux analyses, two experiments using different observation data sets were performed for 2000-2009. One experiment was conducted using a data set that includes additional observations of Siberian tower measurements (Japan-Russia Siberian Tall Tower Inland Observation Network: JR-STATION), and the other experiment was conducted using a data set without the above additional observations. The results show that the global balance of the sources and sinks of surface CO2 fluxes was maintained for both experiments with and without the additional observations. While the magnitude of the optimized surface CO2 flux uptake and flux uncertainty in Siberia decreased from −1.17 ± 0.93 to −0.77 ± 0.70 Pg C yr−1, the magnitude of the optimized surface CO2 flux uptake in the other regions (e.g., Europe) of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) land increased for the experiment with the additional observations, which affect the longitudinal distribution of the total NH sinks. This change was mostly caused by changes in the magnitudes of surface CO2 flux in June and July. The observation impact measured by uncertainty reduction and self-sensitivity tests shows that additional observations provide useful information on the estimated surface CO2 flux. The average uncertainty reduction of the conifer forest of Eurasian boreal (EB) is 29.1 % and the average self-sensitivities at the JR-STATION sites are approximately 60 % larger than those at the towers in North America. It is expected that the Siberian observations play an important role in estimating surface CO2 flux in the NH land (e.g., Siberia and Europe) in the future. </P>

<P>Centrifugal partition chromatography was applied to separate arctigenin and matairesinol from Forsythia koreana extract with a two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane–ethyl acetate–methanol–water (5 : 5 : 5 : 5 v/v). Using this method, arctigenin and matairesinol were successfully separated from partially purified F. koreana extracts in only one step. The purities of isolated compounds were determined to be over 90% by HPLC analysis.</P>

<P>The methanolic extract of Paeonia lactiflora roots significantly protected primary cultures of rat cortical cells exposed to oxidative stress induced by H(2)O(2). Seven monoterpenes, paeonilactone-B (1), paeonilactone-C (2), paeoniflorigenone (3), benzoylpaeoniflorin (4), paeoniflorin (5), oxypaeoniflorin (6) and albiflorin (7), were isolated by bioactivity-guided fractionation and further separation using chromatographic techniques. Among them, compounds 2 and 4 significantly protected primary cultures of rat cortical cells against H(2)O(2)-induced neurotoxicity.</P>
