Multiple sclerosis and lupus erythematosus are chronic, potentially disabling diseases of unknown cause. It is a rare occasion that the finding of both diseases occurs in one patient. Because both diseases may affect the central nervous system, it may be difficult at times to differentiate symptoms of lupus erythematosus from those of multiple sclerosis. As far as we know, there was no case report of SLE in multilple sclerosis in Korea. We report a case of multiple sclerosis accompanied by SLE.

Background: Increased sebum secretion is considered the main causative factor in the pathogenesis of acne. There is an unmet pharmacological need for a novel drug that can control sebum production with a favorable adverse effect profile. Objective: To investigate the effect of azidothymidine on lipid synthesis in sebocytes and to identify the underlying mechanism of the inhibitory effect of azidothymidine on insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1-induced lipid synthesis in sebocytes. Methods: Immortalized human sebocytes were used for the analysis. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and Oil Red O staining were performed to evaluate lipid synthesis in the sebocytes. The differentiation, lipid synthesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, and mitophagy in sebocytes were investigated. Results: TLC and Oil Red O staining revealed that azidothymidine reduced IGF-1 induced lipid synthesis in the immortalized human sebocytes. Azidothymidine also reduced IGF-1-induced expression of transcriptional factors and enzymes involved in sebocyte differentiation and lipid synthesis, respectively. Moreover, we found that IGF-1 upregulated the levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1α, LC-3B, p62, and Parkin, major regulators of mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy in immortalized human sebocytes. In contrast, azidothymidine inhibited IGF-1 induced mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy in the sebocytes. Conclusion: These results suggest that azidothymidine downregulates IGF-1-induced lipogenesis by dysregulating the quality of mitochondria through suppression of mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy in immortalized human sebocytes. Our study provides early evidence that azidothymidine may be an effective candidate for a new pharmacological agent for controlling lipogenesis in sebocytes. (Ann Dermatol 33(5) 425∼431, 2021)

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Naturally, frost forms at fin-tube evaporator surface when refrigerant below 0 °C flows inside the heat exchanger. Frost tends to block the evaporator, hinders efficient heat exchange and degrades the performance of the system. The determination of the start time for defrosting is one of the essential issues that most of air heat pumps are confronted with because it is directly connected to energy consumption. Many types of sensors can be installed for frost detection but they are usually not cost-effective or related logic is not so physically presented. In this study, a novel frost volume calculation method is suggested in order to determine the start time for defrosting in an air-to-air heat pump system. The detailed explanation of the method is presented and verified with experimental data. With this method, the start timing of defrosting can be appropriately judged. At the time of defrosting, the heating capacity decreased from 16.2 to 39.3% and the COP reduced from 12.3 to 26.4% compared with maximum values. The blocking ratio from image processing at the time was between 0.83 and 0.97.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A method for the determination of defrosting start time is proposed. </LI> <LI> Frost volume and blocking ratio are calculated from experimental data. </LI> <LI> Frost volume calculation method is verified by image processing of the evaporator. </LI> <LI> This method accurately determines the timing of deterioration of the system. </LI> </UL> </P>

Personal protection from high temperature metal surface is one of the most important factors for safety ar work. Although various metal materials have very high thermal conductivity, the insulation materials have low property for that. ASTM C1057-12 is considered that the different thermal diffusivity between metal and insulation materials could induce distinctive maximum surface temperature for personal protection for each materials. In this paper results of two types of insulation system, fiber-glass insulation system and insulation paint, are presented, and the characteristics of conduction heat transfer and temperature of each system are calculated. The results and analysis leads to the possibility of the insulation paint for personal protection if the maximum surface temperature is assumed to be 82℃ following ASTM C1057-12, and the superiority of the insulation paint for personal protection due to its benefit of space-saving comapring with traditional fiber glass insulation system.

The use of steam takes over one third of energy consumption in industrial sector. Using steam for processes in factory has many advantage such as quick heat transfer at constant temperature during processes because it utilizes latent heat. For conventional steam generation method, a boiler is commonly installed. However, a boiler has maximum possible efficiency of 100% while heat pump could generate more heat than received work. Introducing heat pumps can have strong effect on energy saving because of waste heat recovery. Most industrial processes which use steam generally have waste water after processes and thrown away after cooling process. However, the temperature of waste water is high thereby reusable as a heat source. In this study, a steam generation heat pump was designed and experiments were conducted to find out optimal charge amount of the system and the performance. In addition, steam generation rate at different heat source temperature was also presented.

In air heat pumps, frost naturally forms when the surface temperature of evaporator is lower than ice point. Judging the proper time of defrosting operation is one of the important task for air heat pump systems. Many different method were suggested previously but most of them are not cost-effective or realistic solution. In this study, a new method for determination of defrosting start time was suggested which calculates frost volume at evaporator. The frost volume was calculated with a dry bulb temperature and a humidity of outdoor air, evaporator temperature and degree of superheat (DSH). This method appropriately judge the start time of defrosting at the point within 15 minutes the system performance starts to decrease.
