Previouslyl we reported on the isolation and structure elucidation of quercetin, avicularin, quercitrin and hyperin from the leaves of Rhododendron brachycarpum D. Don (Ericaceae). In this communication, the isolation of diterpenoid, grayanotoxin I, mp 247∼8˚ [α]_D=-5˚will be presented. 1) Choi, J.S., Choi, J.H., Young, H.S., Park, J.C. and Woo, W.S., Proceedings of 35th annual convention of the Pharmaceutical Society of Korea, 1986, p.108.

Nitrite Scavenging Effect by Flavonoids and Its Structure-Effect Relationship
Choi, Jae-Sue,Park, Si-Hyang,Choi, Jin-Ho The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 1989 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.12 No.1
Nineteen flavonoids, five phenolics, two coumarins, maltol and L-ascorbic acid were tested as scavenger of nitrite which is believed to participate in the formation of N-nitroso compounds. Many were found to be potent scavenger and the five most potent ones were (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, phloroglucinol, caffeic acid and L-ascorbic acid. The nitrite scavenging effect was higher at pH 1.2 than pH 3.0 and increased when the incubation time was longer. The possible relationship of structures to scavenging effect of the flavonoids tested was discussed.
Choi, Jae-Sue,Jung, Mee-Jung,Park, Hye-Jin,Chung, Hae-Young,Kang, Sam-Sik The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 2002 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.25 No.5
From the leaves of Brassica juncea, an radical scavenging isorhamnetin 7-Ο-glucoside on peroxynitrite and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was isolated and characterized based on the spectroscopic evidence. The compound showed the peroxynitrite and DPPH scavenging activities with $IC_{50}$ values of 2.07$\pm$0.17 and 13.3 $\mu$M, respectively. Penicillamine and L-ascorbic acid as positive control exhibited radical scavenging activities with $IC_{50}$ values of 3.17$\pm$0.39 and 12.78 $\mu$M, respectively.
Phytochemical Study on Aloe vera
Choi, Jae-Sue,Lee, Seung-Ki,Sung, Chung-Ki,Jung, Jee-Hyung The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 1996 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.19 No.2
Aloe plants have been used as herbal medicine for centuries and the name aloe means the dried exudate from the cut leaves of Aloe ferox Mill. (Cape aloe, Liliaceae), Aloe ferryi Baker. (Socotrine aloe), A. bainesii Th. Dyer. (Natal aloe) and Aloe vera L. (Curacao aloe) (Namba, 1986). Among them, Aloe vera has not only been one of the most used natural drug well known for its cathartic properties, but also has been widely used as raw materials of cosmetics and health foods (Leung, 1978, Hoffenberg, 1979). Although previous investigations showed that the leaves of A. vera contain a number of anthracene and chromone derivatives such as aloin A, aloin B, 1, 3, 6, 8-tetra-nitro-4,5-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl anthraquinone and 7-hydroxy-aloin, its chemical composition is far from being completely investigated (Hoffenberg, 1979, Rauwald and Voetig, 1982). As a part of our chemical investigations on the constituents of aloe, we report chemical investigation of the freeze dried ground leaves of A. vera which is led to the isolation of five compounds from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the methanolic extract.
Hypoglycemic and Hypolipemic Effects of Ixeris dentata in Diabetic Rats
Choi, Jae-Sue,Young, Han-Suk,Kim, Byung-Woo The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 1990 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.13 No.3
Blood glucose and total lipid levels in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes were determined after intraperitoneal administration of methanolic extract of Ixeris dentat whole plants and its main component, cynaroside (=luteolin 7-O--$\beta$-D-glucoside). From the data obtained, it was concluded that intraperitoneal administration of the methanolic extract produced a significant hypoglycemic effect. Total blood lipids were also decreased. Cynaroside in the streptozotocin-diabetic rats failed to exhibit hypoglycemic effect but a significant hypolipemic activity was observed. Thus, it is suggested that this methanolic extract may contain one or more hypoglycemic and hypolipemic principles including the main flavone glucoside, cynaroside, which can significantly reduce the levels triglyceride and total cholesterol in streptozotocin-diabetic rats.
