        This study was conducted to examine the ion-exchange capacity and experimental basic parameter of ammonia-nitrogen by the domestic natural zeolite. The amount of NH₄^+ ion-exchanged by the domestic natural zeolite was affected by the particle size, the order was -40/+100 > -14/+20 -200/+325 -4/+8 mesh. The removal efficiency of NH₄^+ ion-exchanged decreased as the calcined temperature increased. The ion-exchange kinetics fitted from very well to the Freundlich isotherm, the amount of NH₄^+ ion-exchanged by the -40/+100mesh was higher than by the -200/+325mesh The effects of coexisting cations(Na^+, Ca^(2+)) on the ion-exchange by the domestic natural zeolite decreased the ion-exchange capacity and were found to be Na^+> Ca^(2+). The predominent ion exchanged with domestic natural zeolite was Na^+ and the extracted ion was Na^+> +K^+ > Ca^(2+) > Mg^(2+) > Al^(3+) in order of concentration.

        Aqueous solution with the dissolved ammonia is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, refrigerants, stabilizers and many household cleaning agents. The wide applications result in ammonia contamination in water. Ammonia can be removed from water by physical, biological, and chemical methods. Especially ozonation is effective in the treatment of water with low concentration of ammonia. Therefore, this study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia. The rate of reaction was proportional to the influent ozone concentration and the overall kinetics was applied as the first or second order. The reacted ammonia was converted completely to nitrate ion. The destruction rate of ammonia increased gradually with the influent ozone concentration.

      • 질편모충(Trichomonas vaginalis)의 시험관내에서의 용혈능

        To evaluate the hemolytic activity of T. vagindlis from Korean women and fresh human RBC of A type were nsed for hemolytic assay. RBC(1×10 /ml) was added to RPMI-TPS media(RPMI 1840:TPS-1= 20 : 1) containing T. vaginalis(2×10 ) and incubated at 37℃, 5% CO₂incubator for 6hr and hemolysis was measured by spectrophotometer at 412m. We investigated the parasite to erythrocyte ratio and lemperature needed for hemotysis. Optimal erythrocyte lysis by T. vaginalis was achieved at ratio of 1 : 5 and optimol temperature 37℃. Minimal hemolytic activity was detected in lysates of T. vaginalis. No hemolysis occured when a membrane a 3㎛ pore size was nsed to prevent contact between parasites and erythrocytes. These data suggest a need for contact for trichomonol hemolysis. Hemolytic activity did not correlated with the production of subcutaneous abscess in mice.

Therefore, this study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia at the high pH. The results were as follows: The oxidation rate of ammonia increased with pH, and the depletion rate of ammonia was first order with respect to pH. And the rate constant varied from 6.9 ?10^-4 to 62.2 ?10^-4 min^-1 as the pH increased from 7.1 to 12.1

      • 면역시킨 마우스 흉선 및 비장세포에 대한 병원성 Naegleria의 세포병변 효과

        Naegleria fowleri is a causative agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in man and experimental animal. We investigated the interaction of immunized mouse thymocyte and splenocyte with N. fowleri trophozoites in vitro. BALb/c mouse was immunized with 150∼200×10⁴/ml N. fowleri trophozoites, intraperitoneally, once a week, for two times. Thymus and spleen cells from immunized or normal mouse cocultured with N.fowleri in 10% FCS+MEM, 37℃, 55%-CO₂incubator and cell: amoeba ratio was 200∼400:1. Thymus or spleen cells and N. fowleri were observed at 24, 48, 72 hrs after incubation by inverted microscope. Spleen cells from immunized mice showed moderate lysis aftre 72 hrs with round amoeba, but other group cells were completely lysed at 48 hrs after incubation with N. fowleri. It may be secreted a certain cytolytic amterial from N. fowleri because of cell lysis occured abruptly after 24 hrs culture. And amoebae showed better condition i.e., pseudopodaand vacuoles, after phagocytosis of lytic cell material. On the other hand, nonadherent cells from immunized spleen were completely lysed at 48 hrs with N. fowleri conculture and immunized thymus cell with aditive activated mactophage showed prolonged cell survival. And so, cooperative reaction of immunized T-lympocyte and macrophage are important to supperss N. fowleri in vitro.

        20~30대 젊은 여성의 골밀도, 신체조성과 식행동 연구

        This study was carried out to identify bone mineral density (BMD), body composition, lifestyle and dietary habits of young women by physical measurement and questionnaires. The study subjects, 190 young women living in Seoul, were divided into three age groups: 20 ~ 24 years (93), 25 ~ 29 years (44) and 30 ~ 39 years (53). There was no significant difference in mean body muscle mass, protein, mineral, body fat and BMI among the three age groups. The rate of low weight (18%) in 20 years group was higher that of the 30 years (11.3%). The mean BMD and T-score were 0.44 g/㎠ and -0.66. BMD and T-score of the forearm bone were significantly higher in the 30 ~ 39 years group. But BMD and T-score of calcanues were not significantly different among the three age groups. The rate of normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis subjects by BMD were 60.5%, 38.4%, 1.1%, respectively. The rate of osteopenia in 20 ~ 24 years group was significantly higher than the other age groups. The rate of meal irregularity was significantly higher in 20 ~ 24 years group. The rate of women who walk and are exposed to sunlight more than 1hr per day were significantly higher in 20~24 years group than the others. However, the score of food behaviors is significantly higher (bad) in 20 ~ 24 years group than the others. The relationship between BMD and frequency of food intake showed significant differences in beans, broom, seaweed and rice wine. In conclusion, the risk rate of BMD was very high, 40% of the subjects, and the risk rate of BMD was higher in 20 years group than 30 years group, and the rate of low weight in 20 years group was higher than in 30 years group. The food habits and behaviors were not healthy enough. Therefore, nutrition education is needed for bone health.

      • 수증기 개질반응용 니켈촉매에 첨가된 리튬의 효과

        In the direct internal reforming type molten carbonate fuel cell, alkali carbonates used as electrolyte in the cell are transported to reforming catalyst of which activity drastically decreases. In our previous work, the deactivation of the nickel catalyst was studied with increasing the amount of added lithium. Unexpectedly, the increase of activity was observed with a small amount of lithium less than 1wt%. The results of TPR, XRD and chemisorption showed no significant difference between the fresh catalyst and the Li-added one, implying that lithium did not cause the change of morphological property of the supported nickel. To elucidate the effect of lithium the methanation of CO was applied to the catalysts, which was considered as the reverse reaction of the key elementary step of methane steam reforming. It can be seen by an online mass spectrometer that the small injection of CO/H₂ mixture into the Li-added catalyst reactor at 650 ℃ showed the longer tail of produced methane than into the fresh one. The delay should be originated from the effect of lithium, which determined the overall rate on the Li-added catalyst.

        Dorsal root ganglion(DRG) block by the local anesthetics and steroids which has done classically in low back pain(LBP) patients with radiculopathy has high incidence of recurrence rate and side effects of steroids. Recently a new technique of pulsed radiofrequency thermocoagulation(P-RFTC) was introduced and substituted for it because of the benefits such as relatively low recurrence rate, low risk of nerve injury and comfort during the procedure. We experienced 15 patients who had LBP with radiculopathy and no or little response to epidural steroid injection. When we performed DR ganglionotomy by P- RFTC under the C-arm guide in these patients, we tried to approach the exact DR ganglion using tow cannulas - the one for obtaining patient's subjective symptoms and injection of contrast dye, the other for making a RF lesioning after identifying the impedance of sensory and motor stimulation. In conclusion, DR ganglionotomy by P- RFTC using two cannulas in LBP patients is an easy and safe procedure with satisfactory results.

        Nitric Oxide (NO), derived from L-arginine, is produced by two types (constitutive and inducible) of nitric oxide synthase (NOS: cNOS and iNOS). The NO produced in large amounts by the iNOS is known to be responsible for the vasodilation and hypotension observed in septic shock and inflammation. The inhibitors of iNOS, thus, may be useful candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases accompanied by the overproduction of NO. We prepared alcoholic extracts of herbal drugs which have been used for the treatment of inflammation in oriental medicine. We have screened the inhibitory activity of NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages after the treatment of these extracts. Among the 81 kinds of extracts of herbal drugs, 34 extracts showed potent inhibitory activity of NO production above 50% at the concentration of 50 (μg/ml. The inhibitory activities of NO production were also evaluated for several solvent fractions at three different concentrations. Especially, hexane soluble fractions of Agrimonia pilosa, Hydrangea serrata, Machilus thunbergii, Prunella vulgaris, Saussurea lappa, Tussilago farfara, and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of Angelica gigas, Ostericum koreanum, Torilis japonica, Perilla frutescence showed moderate activity at 10 and/ or 25 (μg/ml. These fractions are promising candidates for the study of the activity-guided chromatographic purification of active compounds.

      • 지방과 도시인의 交通手段 利用實態 및 態度 比較硏究

        지방과 도시인의 도로교통 이용실태 및 태도 조사 결과를 보고하였다. 지방을 대표하는 지역으로 경상남도 거창읍을, 그리고 도시는 서울특별시 강남구 대치동을 선정하였고, 각 지역에서 800명(400 부부쌍)의 무선표본을 대상으로 질문지로 조사하였다. 조사내용을 출퇴근 길의 교통수단이용, 외출시의 교통수단이용, 자가용의 이용및 소유실태, 운전면허 소지 및 취득실태, 교통사고경험, 대중교통수단에 대한 평가 및 관련 태도 등이었다. 조사결과, 도시와 지방간의 현재의 교통수단 이용에서의 차이를 파악할 수 있었을 뿐 아니라, 후속연구에서 교통수단이용의 변화를 평가할 수 있는 기저선이 마련되었다. Two representative samples of married couples. one(n=400 couples) from Dae-Chi Dong in Seoul and another(n=400 couples) from the town of Ku-Ch'ang in South Kyung-sang Province were studied through a questionnaire. The questionnaire dealt with (1)transportation uses in commuting to work (2)transportation uses on weekends. (3)types of automobiles owned and the uses to which they are put. (4)statistics related to obtaining and possessing driver licenses. (5)experience of traffic accidents, and (6)attitudes regarding the public trasportations and policies. The study as designed to provide a baseline for future studies on the transportation statistics as well as gauging the urban-rural difference in automobile culture.
