Objectives : The purpose of this study is to understand the temperature characteristics depending on the thickness and material of the needle used with the Electronic Warm Acupuncture Device (EWAD). Methods : We controlled experimental environment and measured temperature changes of a silicon phantom in which K-type thermocouples were inserted at depths of 2, 7 mm. EWAD perfomed with acupuncture needles of various thicknesses (0.25×60 mm, 0.40×60 mm, and 0.50×60 mm) and materials (Gold 0.40×50 mm). We set non-needle (only heated with EWAD skin heater) group as a control group. Results : The maximum temperature and temperature changes of 0.40 mm, 0.50 mm needle group were significantly higher than the non-needle group. The highest temperature range in all needle groups was 0.50 mm needle group (41.44±0.31℃). However, the 0.25 mm needle group was not significantly different from the non-needle group. Maximum temperature of gold needle group was significantly higher than stainless steel needle group. Temperature changes of gold needle group were higher than stainless steel group at the depth of 7 mm. Conclusions : It was found that needle thickness and material of acupuncture had an effect on the temperature of the EWAD. When performing EWAD treatment, consideration of thickness and material of acupuncture is needed. Future research is needed using phantoms that can reflect actual clinical situations and better mimic the human body.
Manufacture of Rainbow-colored Veneer by Natural Dyeing
Suh, Jin Suk,Park, Ryeong Jae,Cho, Yeong Hee,Song, Eon Ja,Kim, Jong In,Park, Sang Bum Korea Furniture Society 2015 한국가구학회지 Vol.26 No.3
The wood veneers were clearly rainbow-colored with natural dyes. As shown through Korean-style jacket with stripes of multi-colors beyond traditional obang colors (red, blue, yellow, black and white colors), eco-friendly coloring methods representing Korean colors familiar from old times could be used nobly by coloring natural wood veneer being raw material of wood products. In terms of industrialization, the study to manifest korean color, substituting chemical stains such as dye and pigment, would be necessary. In order to realize this purpose, the study about economical dyeing materials and characteristics, that is, mordant, dyeing and drying techniques showing environment-friendly coloring and high coloration level ought to be followed. In addition to this, investigating discoloration transition by fading test for interior and exterior uses would have to be carried out.

Purpose: Despite the overall excellent prognosis for patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), these tumors are also associated with a 5% relatively high lymph node (LN) recurrence rate and the optimal surgical extent of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma has been controversial. Cervical LN metastases (LNMs) are found in about 40∼65% of patients with PTMC. The aim of this study is to identify the factors affecting lymph node metastases (LNMs) in patients with PTMC. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of 335 patients with PTMC who underwent total thyroidectomy or lobectomy with elective central lymph node dissection (CLND) at Kangnam St. Mary’s Hospital between Jan. 2006 and Dec. 2008. We investigated the association of LNMs and clinicopathologic factors such as sex, age, multiplicity, extrathyroidal extension, and tumor size. Results: LNMs were present in 88 patients (26.3%). Univariate analysis showed that less than 45 years of age, male, multiplicity, a tumor size of greater than 5 mm, thyroid capsular invasion and extrathyroidal extension were predictive factors for LNMs (P<0.05). Of these, the age, male, tumor size and extrathyroidal extension were independent predictive factors for LNMs on multivariate analysis. Conclusion: A tumor size (>5 ㎜), male, age (<45) and extrathyroidal extension were determined as the predictive factors for LNMs, which occurred in about one fourth of the patients with PTMC. Therefore, elective CLND should be considered in patients with PTMC who have these factors through a thorough investigation before surgery.
Development and Evaluation of Genome-Probing Microarrays for Monitoring Lactic Acid Bacteria
Bae, Jin-Woo,Rhee, Sung-Keun,Park, Ja Ryeong,Chung, Won-Hyong,Nam, Young-Do,Lee, Insun,Kim, Hongik,Park, Yong-Ha American Society for Microbiology 2005 Applied and environmental microbiology Vol.71 No.12
ABSTRACT
The genome-probing microarray (GPM) was developed for quantitative, high-throughput monitoring of community dynamics in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation through the deposit of 149 microbial genomes as probes on a glass slide. Compared to oligonucleotide microarrays, the specificity of GPM was remarkably increased to a species-specific level. GPM possesses about 10- to 100-fold higher sensitivity (2.5 ng of genomic DNA) than the currently used 50-mer oligonucleotide microarrays. Since signal variation between the different genomes was very low compared to that of cDNA or oligonucleotide-based microarrays, the capacity of global quantification of microbial genomes could also be observed in GPM hybridization. In order to assess the applicability of GPMs, LAB community dynamics were monitored during the fermentation of kimchi, a traditional Korean food. In this work, approximately 100 diverse LAB species could be quantitatively analyzed as actively involved in kimchi fermentation.
