        Structure and Challenges of a Security Policy on Small and Medium Enterprises

        Information Technology (IT) plays an increasingly important role for small and medium-sized enterprises. It has become fundamental for these companies to protect information and IT assets in relation to risks and threats that have grown in recent years. This study aims to understand the importance and structure of an information security policy, using a quantitative study that intends to identify the most important and least relevant elements of an information security policy document. The findings of this study reveal that the top three most important elements in the structure of a security policy are the asset management, security risk management and define the scope of the policy. On the other side, the three least relevant elements include the executive summary, contacts and manual inspection. Additionally, the study reveals that the importance given to each element of the security policy is slightly changed according to the sectors of activity. The elements that show the greatest variability are the review process, executive summary and penalties. On the other side, the purpose of the policy and the asset management present a stable importance for all sectors of activity.

        Evaluation of Antiproliferative, Anti-Type 2 Diabetes, and Antihypertension Potentials of Ellagitannins from Strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) Using In Vitro Models

        Strawberries represent the main source of ellagic acid derivatives in the Brazilian diet, corresponding to more than 50% of all phenolic compounds found in the fruit. There is a particular interest in the determination of the ellagic acid content in fruits because of possible chemopreventive benefits. In the present study, the potential health benefits of purified ellagitannins from strawberries were evaluated in relation to the antiproliferative activity and in vitro inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) relevant for potential management of hyperglycemia and hypertension. Therefore, a comparison among ellagic acid, purified ellagitannins, and a strawberry extract was done to evaluate the possible synergistic effects of phenolics. In relation to the antiproliferative activity, it was observed that ellagic acid had the highest percentage inhibition of cell proliferation. The strawberry extract had lower efficacy in inhibiting the cell proliferation, indicating that in the case of this fruit there is no synergism. Purified ellagitannins had high α-amylase and ACE inhibitory activities. However, these compounds had low α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. These results suggested that the ellagitannins and ellagic acid have good potential for the management of hyperglycemia and hypertension linked to type 2 diabetes. However, further studies with animal and human models are needed to advance the in vitro assay-based biochemical rationale from this study.

        Prolonged Ingestion of Prehydrolyzed Whey Protein Induces Little or No Change in Digestive Enzymes, but Decreases Glutaminase Activity in Exercising Rats

        Because consumption of whey protein hydrolysates is on the increase, the possibility that prolonged ingestion of whey protein hydrolysates affect the digestive system of mammals has prompted us to evaluate the enzymatic activities of pepsin, leucine-aminopeptidase, chymotrypsin, trypsin, and glutaminase in male Wistar rats fed diets containing either a commercial whey isolate or a whey protein hydrolysate with medium degree of hydrolysis and to compare the results with those produced by physical training (sedentary, sedentary-exhausted, trained, and trained-exhausted) in the treadmill for 4 weeks. The enzymatic activities were determined by classical procedures in all groups. No effect due to the form of the whey protein in the diet was seen in the activities of pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and leucine-aminopeptidase. Training tended to increase the activity of glutaminase, but exhaustion promoted a decrease in the trained animals, and consumption of the hydrolysate decreased it even further. The results are consistent with the conclusion that chronic consumption of a whey protein hydrolysate brings little or no modification of the proteolytic digestive system and that the lowering of glutaminase activity may be associated with an antistress effect, counteracting the effect induced by training in the rat.
