<P>The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the physicochemical parameters associated with the pathogenicity of high-aspect-ratio nanomaterials is important for comprehensive regulation efforts and safety-by-design approaches. Here, we report quantitative data on the correlations between the rigidity of these nanomaterials and toxicity endpoints <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. As measured by new ISO standards published in 2017, rigidity shows a strong positive correlation with inflammogenic potential, as indicated by inflammatory cell counts and IL-1β (a biomarker for frustrated phagocytosis) levels in both the acute and chronic phases. <I>In vitro</I> experiments using differentiated THP-1 cells find that only highly rigid multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and asbestos fibers lead to piercing and frustrated phagocytosis. Thus, this study suggests a bending ratio of 0.97 and a static bending persistence length of 1.08 as threshold rigidity values for asbestos-like pathogenicity. However, additional research using MWCNTs with rigidity values that lie between those of non-inflammogenic (<I>D</I>b = 0.66 and SBPL = 0.87) and inflammogenic fibers (<I>D</I>b = 0.97 and SBPL = 1.09) is required to identify more accurate threshold values, which would be useful for comprehensive regulation and safety-by-design approaches based on MWCNTs.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

In this paper a neural network controller called "Feedback-State Learning "for control of the attitude of a wheeled inverted pendulum is presented. For the controller the design of a stable feedback controller is necessary, so the LQR is used for the feedback controller because the LQR has good performance on controlling nonlinear is applied to the stabilization of a wheeled inverted pendulum. Because of its nonlinear characteristics such as friction and parameter variations in the linearization, the wheeled inverted pendulum is used for demonstration of the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

The purpose of this research is to suggest the policy making for the effective promotion of Quality Small-Group activity. Since 1975, variety of organizations in Korea have widely the implemented Quality Small-Group activities for their management systems. Today, Companies are facing the harsh realities of a competitive environment. This is no time for revolutionary change. Instead, Companies are instituting revolutionary change meant to have impact within a very short time frame. Bold steps are required to lead the industry into a future of improved efficiency and significant productivity gains. The Worker's Quality Small-Group activity is, essentially, a trouble shooting oriented voluntary small group within their working place to improve the surroundings creatively. The industries have enthusiastically used Quality Small-Group activities and were influenced from them. The Quality Small-Group activities can be regarded as a kind of Knowledge Management where new knowledge is created and knowledge is shared in the economy. However, the academics were less interested in this subject, as a result, there were no systematic guidances for Quality Circle activities. Also, the government was less interested in these activities, as a result, there were no systematic policy making for Quality Small-Group activities. Thus, in this research, the effective policy making for Quality Small-Group activities were suggested which were based on the results of survey Questionnaires. As a results of this research, to maximize the effect of TQM in the nationwide, Quality Small-Group activity as a bottom-up management should be more expanded and revitalized.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a three-wheel riding cultivator for improving the performance of the current four-wheel riding cultivators in the market. Methods: A prototype three-wheel riding cultivator with the rated power of 15.5-kW, a primary hydrostatic and a two-speed selective gear transmission shifts, front/rear three-wheel drive, a hydraulic wheel tread adjustment, and the mid-section attachment of the major implements was designed and constructed. Its specifications and basic performance are investigated. Results: The maximum speeds of the prototype at the low and high stages were measured to be approximately 7.31, and 11.29 km/h in forward travel, respectively, and approximately 3.60, and 6.37 km/h in rearward travel, respectively. The minimum ground clearance is shown to be 670 mm. The rotating speeds of the power takeoff (PTO) shaft at the low and high stages are shown to be approximately 795 and 1,140 rpm, respectively. The tread of the rear wheels, the minimum radius of turning, and the maximum lifting height of the parallel link device are measured to be within 1,320-1,720 mm, 2.80 m, and 390 mm, respectively. Approximately 25.3% and 74.7% of the total weight of the prototype are distributed in the front and rear wheels on flat ground, respectively. When the tread of rear wheels increased from 1,320 to 1,720 mm, the left and right static lateral overturning angles increased from $33.4^{\circ}$ to $39.1^{\circ}$ and from $29.0^{\circ}$ to $36.1^{\circ}$, respectively. Conclusions: The prototype three-wheel riding cultivator showed a wide range of travel and PTO speeds, high minimum ground clearance, small minimum radius of turning, and easy control of the rear wheel tread. Further, the easy observation of cultivating operations by mid-mounting the implements can improve quality of work. Therefore, the prototype is expected to contribute to the riding mechanization of cultivating operations for various upland crops in Korea.

<P>Red Liriope platyphylla (RLP) manufactured by two repeated steps (steaming and drying) stimulates the insulin secretion ability and glucose receptor signaling pathway in an animal model for type I diabetes. This study examined the levels of glucose and lipid metabolism-related factors in a useful animal model for type II diabetes with obesity following RLP treatment for 3 weeks to determine if RLP treatment affects the glucose concentration, insulin secretion and fatty acid oxidation. The following results were obtained: i) RLP contained a large amount of polyphenolic compounds; ii) insulin secretion was induced in RLP-treated OLETF rats, although there were no significant differences in body weight, glucose tolerance test and glucose concentration; iii) the RLP-treated OLETF rats showed a significant increase in adiponectin concentration but the concentration of triglyceride and LDL decreased compared to the vehicle-treated rats; iv) although the abdominal fat mass and adipocyte size did not change with RLP treatment, expression of the adipocyte marker genes and β-oxidation genes in fat tissue was recovered to the level of the LETO rats; v) fatty liver formation was reduced dramatically in the liver of the RLP-treated group compared to the vehicle-treated group; vi) the expression of adipocyte marker genes and the β-oxidation gene in the liver tissue were generally similar to those of the abdominal fat but PPAR-γ showed a reverse pattern in the RLP- and vehicle-treated OLETF rats. These results suggest that RLP may stimulate insulin secretion and a decrease in lipid in serum, and may also suppress fatty liver formation through the regulation of fatty acid oxidation. The data presented here highlight the possibility that RLP can be considered a candidate for the prevention or alleviation of obesity-related diseases.</P>

Behcet's disease is a recurrent and multisystemic disorder which usually persists over many years. In 1937 Behcet described a chronic relapsing triple symptom complex of recurrent oral ulceration, genital ulceration and ocular inflammation. Other manifestations of the syndrome include arthritis, cutaneous vasculitis, thrombophlebitis, epididymitis, ulcers of gastrointestinal tract and meningoencephalitis. Recently, a case was experienced involving intestinal Behcet's syndrome with duodenal ulcer bleeding. A 32-year-old male patient was admitted due to hematemesis, and epigastric pain. The patient had ulcers on the oral mucosa, soft palate, external genitalia, and anus. An irregularly marginated ulcer with bleeding was found on the anterior of the duodenal bulb through esophago- gastroduodenoscopic examination. The patient was diagnosed with Behcet's disease and was treated with steroids. In this paper, the case of duodenal bulb involvement of Behcet's disease is reported with a review of relevant literature.
