Methane Reforming Reactions over Ni/Ce-ZrO₂, Ni/La-ZrO₂ and Ni/Si-ZrO₂ Catalysts

Hyun-Seog Roh,전기원,Sang-Eon Park 한국공업화학회 2003 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.9 No.3

Methane reforming reactions such as steam reforming of methane (SRM) and oxy-reforming of methane (ORM) have been carried out over Ni/Ce-ZrO2, Ni/La-ZrO2 and Ni/Si-ZrO2 catalysts. It was found that Ni/Ce-ZrO2 exhibits the highest activity as well as stability among the catalysts tested even though they do not have significant difference in characteristic data such as BET surface area, Ni surface area, H2 uptake and so on. Thus, it was confirmed that the remarkable activities of Ni/Ce-ZrO2 in methane reforming reactions are due to the role of a Ce-ZrO2 support resulting from strong metal to support interaction and high oxygen storage capacity.

Carbon Dioxide Reforming of Methane over Ni/CaO/Al₂O₃

        Hyun-Seog Roh,Zhong-Wen Liu,H. S. Potdar,Jae-Woo Kim,전기원 한국공업화학회 2003 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.9 No.6

Ni catalysts supported on CaO-precoated Al2O3 were prepared and characterized by BET, XRD and TPR techniques. The Ni/CaO/Al2O3 catalysts with various CaO loadings were applied to carbon dioxide reforming of CH4. All the catalysts showed a fairly good stability but the activity of Ni/CaO/Al2O3 depended upon the amount of CaO. Among the catalysts tested, the Ni/CaO/Al2O3 catalyst with a Ca/Al ratio of 0.04 exhibited the highest activity and stability. The interaction between Ni and the support was changed with the addition of CaO and the variation of Ca/Al ratio. Based on the characterization results, the promotional effect of CaO on Ni/-Al2O3 resulted from (1) the interaction between Ni and CaO, (2) the stabilization of CaO on Al2O3 and (3) the strong basicity of CaO. It was suggested that the highly dispersed CaO species are effective to obtain active and stable Ni/CaO/Al2O3 catalysts in carbon dioxide reforming of methane.

Low Temperature Methane Steam Reforming for Hydrogen Production for Fuel Cells

        Hyun-Seog Roh,전기원 대한화학회 2009 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.30 No.1

Low temperature methane steam reforming to produce H2 for fuel cells has been calculated thermodynamically considering both heat loss of the reformer and unreacted H2 in fuel cell stack. According to the thermodynamic equilibrium analysis, it is possible to operate methane steam reforming at low temperatures. A scheme for the low temperature methane steam reforming to produce H2 for fuel cells by burning both unconverted CH4 and H2 to supply the heat for steam methane reforming has been proposed. The calculated value of the heat balance temperature is strongly dependent upon the amount of unreacted H2 and heat loss of the reformer. If unreacted H2 increases, less methane is required because unreacted H2 can be burned to supply the heat. As a consequence, it is suitable to increase the reaction temperature for getting higher CH4 conversion and more H2 for fuel cell stack. If heat loss increases from the reformer, it is necessary to supply more heat for the endothermic methane steam reforming reaction from burning unconverted CH4, resulting in decreasing the reforming temperature. Experimentally, it has been confirmed that low temperature methane steam reforming is possible with stable activity.

Direct Decomposition of NO over Plasma-Assisted Catalytic System Induced by Microwave Irradiation

        Roh, Hyun-Seog,Park, Yong-Ki,Park, Sang-Eon 한국공업화학회 2003 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.9 No.4

Direct decomposition of NO was carried out over plasma-assisted catalytic system (PACS) having both microwave absorbents for plasma generation and NO decomposition catalysts for the conversion of NO into N_2 and O_2; Co_3O_4 and SiC were used as microwave absorbents and Cu-ZSM-5 was used as a NO decomposition catalyst. Stable and light blue-colored plasma could be generated successfblly in atmospheric condition over 95 wt% SiC/Cu-ZSM-5 and 25 wt% Co_3O_4/Cu-ZSM-5 PACS-5 by the irradiation of continuous microwave, which showed superior NO decomposition activity. More than 98% of NO was decomposed into N_2 and O_2 without the formation of N_2O over 25 wt% Co_3O4/Cu-ZSM-5 PACSs at GHSV > 45000 h^-1 and the apparent temperature of 280℃.

Methane Reforming Reactions over Stable Ni/ θ -Al₂O₃ Catalysts

        Hyun-Seog Roh,전기원,Wen-Sheng Dong,Seung-Chan Baek,Sang-Eon Park 한국공업화학회 2002 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.8 No.5

NiO/θ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared and investigated after reduction treatment in the methane conversion reactions, such as oxy-reforming, steam reforming and oxy-steam reforming. Among the catalysts with various Ni loading, 12% Ni loading exhibits not only the highest catalytic activity and selectivity but also remarkable stability. The TPR results reveal that strong interaction between Ni and support results in forming stable NiOx species. Reducibility of NiO and the population of NiOx compared with NiO and/or NiAl2O4 play very important roles in the catalytic activity and stability of Ni/θ-Al2O3. Metallic Ni sites formed from the reduction of both NiO weakly interacting with the support and NiOx strongly interacting with the support are active sites for methane reforming reactions. Even though free NiO sites are prerequisite for high activity, the increase of NiO population in high Ni loading favorably promotes Ni sintering resulting in undesirable catalytic properties.

Carbon Dioxide Reforming of Methane over Ni/CaO/Al₂O₃

        Roh, Hyun-Seog,Liu, Zhong-Wen,Potdar, H.S.,Kim, Jae-Woo,Jun, Ki-Won 한국공업화학회 2003 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.9 No.6

Ni catalysts supported on CaO-precoated A1₂0₃ were prepared and characterized by BET, XRD and TPR techniques. The Ni/CaO/A1₂O₃ catalysts with various CaO loadings were applied to carbon dioxide refonning of CH₄. All the catalysts showed a fairly good stability but the activity of Ni/CaO/A1₂O₃ depended upon the amount of CaO. Among the catalysts tested, the Ni/CaO/A1₂O₃ catalyst with a Ca/AI ratio of 0.04 exhibited the highest activity and stability. The interaction between Ni and the support was changed with the addition of CaO and the variation of Ca/Al ratio. Based on the characterization results, the promotional effect of CaO on Ni/-Al₂O₃ resulted from (1) the interaction between Ni and CaO, (2) the stabilization of CaO on A1₂O₃; and (3) the strong basicity of CaO. It was suggested that the highly dispersed CaO species are effective to obtain active and stable Ni/CaO/Al₂O₃; catalysts in carbon dioxide reforming of methane.

Adsorptive Desulfurization of Natural Gas for Fuel Cells

        Roh, Hyun-Seog,Jun, Ki-Won,Kim, Ji-Youn,Kim, Jae-Woo,Park, Dal-Ryung,Kim, Jae-Dong,Yang, Soo-Seok 한국공업화학회 2004 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.10 No.4

Desulfurization of natural gas using the adsorption method for fuel cells has been investigated. Sulfur capacities of activated carbon (AC), Fe/AC, BEA zeolite (BEA), and Fe/BEA were obtained from the breakthrough curves of tert-butyl mercaptan (TBM) and tetrahydrothiophene (THT). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of TBM and THT was conducted on the adsorbents also. The sulfur-adsorption capacities appear to be closely related to the desorption area of chemisorbed sulfur compounds. Fe/BEA (Fe: 3%) prepared by the ion-exchange method exhibits the highest sulfur capacity (19.6% gs-_(comp_)/g_(sorb)) among the adsorbents tested because of the strong chemisorption of sulfur compounds on the Lewis acid sites present in BEA zeolite and the beneficial Fe effect on the Fe/BEA adsorbent through the possibility of complexation.
