Recently, atmospheric contamination by exhaust dusts from diesel automobiles and from plants is critical in our country so that many people are exposed to respiratory disease and other related problems. Because of this, the basic study for development of the particle removal system was done in a vertical, cylindrical electrostatic precipitator(ESP) containing a tungsten wire in the center. Corona discharges occurred as the voltage was applied higher. After the injection of activated carbon particles of 37∼74μm into the electrostatic precipitator(ESP), the collection efficiency of the particles was analyzed based on various voltages(2∼8kV) and air flow rates(10.84∼18.12L/min). In addition to this, we examined the collection efficiency of the particles according to the weight of injected carbon(0.2∼2.0g). The collection efficiency increased at higher voltages and at lower air flow rates. This fact corresponds with Deutsch equation. But the discrepancy between experimental data and the theoretical prediction of the collection efficiency increased at higher voltages. Moreover, as air flow rate increased(17.36∼18.12L/min), a more difference between experimental data and Deutsch equation existed. As the collection efficiency decreased gradually. The maximum collection efficiency of 83% was obtained at the air flow rate of 10.8L/min and the voltage of 8kV in this system.

The resonant frequency of the dielectric rod resonator which is surrounded by cylindrical cavity can be calculated very exactly by using eigenfunction expansion method in the concept of electric and magnetic wall from the symmetry. But if the supporter is put in the cavity, the symmetry disappears. Thus this method has some errors. In this paper, the resonant frequency of the asymmetric dielectric rod resonator was calculated by using the eigenfunction expansion method. Also, the effect of the supporter was discussed. Then we found that the resonant frequency was more affected in the case of TM mode than TE or Hybrid modes as the length of the supporter was longer.

Pathological observations were examined after abdominal inoculation in 7∼8㎝ sized flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) with 1X10^7 cfu/㎖ of Streptococcus faecalis. The infected flounder were clinically observed and weighed a fish body at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 days post inoculation. In infected group, mortality were 70% and feed efficiency were 7.2%. In non-infected group, mortality were 10% and feed efficiency were 18.2%. Macroscopically, the significant lesions were characterized by protrusions and opacity of the eyes and ulcer of the caudal pecuncle. Histopathologically, the lesions were observed a degeneration. necrosis and inflammatory cells in muscle of the caudal peduncle and a degeneration and necrosis of the rod cells and detached retina from the black pigmented layer
Acremonium chrysogenum에 의한 Cephalosporin C 생산 및 모델링

The production of cephalosporin C and its biosynthetic modeling were studied. Cultivation experiments were carried out in an agitated and aerated fermentor using Acremonium chrysogenum. Corn steep liquor was used as a major carbon source. Intracellular and extracellular concentrations of metabolites and enzymes were measured. Based on enzymatic kinetics the biosynthetic modeling of cephalosporin C was developed and used to compare the experimental data with simulation results. In the simulation the effect of dissolved oxygen concentraction on cephalosporin C production was investigated. For the high production yield of cephalosporin C the dissolved oxygen concentration should be kept over 40 % during the cultivation. The biosynthetic modeling can help further to understand the biosynthetic machinery of the microorganism to produce cephalosporin C.

Two farmed young ostrich chicks were applied to pathology laboratory at Chungnam National University. Grossly, one ostrich showed rotated tibiotarsus, the other showed rolled toes. Case 1 ostrich was hypertrophy of fibualis longus and tibial cranialis tendon and gastrocnemius tendon in crus, inflammation of flexor digitorum longus. In histopathological views, myocytes of fiburalis longus were showed hypertrophy and hyperplasia. It is not found any specific feature in X-ray of the case 2 ostrich. Limb deformities were detected frequently in farmed ostrich chicks in 2- to 3 weeks old. Limb deformities were an important cause of mortality in farmed ostrich chicks during the first 10weeks after hatch. Cause of limb deformities were considered a nutrition problem.

Pilomatricoma was histopathologically diagnosed in a 2.5-year-old male Alaskan malamute. The patient was referred to Chungnam National University, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with solitary, firm and well-circumscribed mass at shoulder. Grossly, the mass was dome shaped to tumor like and 10 x 8 x 5㎝ in size. Some lesions had gritty or bony consistency and was chalky when sectioned Histopathologic feature included mumerous clusters of tightly arranged, basaloid cells with evenly distributed chromatin and ghost cells were characterized by a central unstained zone. The ghost cells often become calcified and osseous metaplasia was also present.
푸마르산으로부터 숙신산 생물전환을 위한 Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 균체의 포괄담체에 의한 고정화

The Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 cells were immobilized within the polymer matrices such as agar, Ca-alginate, and k -carrageenan in order to investigate bioconversion characteristics of immobilized Enterococcus faecalis RKY1. Agar and k-carrageenan gels were prepared for cubic type, and Ca-alginate gels for bead type. When the seed volume of immobilized cells was adjusted to 10%(v/v), the optimum concentrations of agar, sodium alginate, and k -carrageenan for immo- bilization of Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 cells were 2%(w/v) for all. In this condition, the conversion ratios were 93.6, 96.4, 76.5%, respectively. Immobilized cells entrapped in agar, Ca-alginate, and k -carrageenan have all the optimum pH of 7.0. The optimum temperature of immobilized cells was 40℃ for agar gels, 35℃ for Ca-alginate gels, and 40℃ for k -carrageenan gels. Therefore, Ca-alginate gels were suitable for immobilization of Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 for succinate production.
Rhizopus oryzae KCTC 11970을 이용한 푸마르산 생산조건의 최적화

This work was developed in several steps to find the optimum conditions of fumaric acid production by Rhizopus oryzae KCTC 11970 in flask culture. Six different carbon sources and eleven nitrogen sources were tested. CaCO_3 was used as a neutralizing agent to control pH of medium. The optimum carbon source and nitrogen source were glucose 70 g/L and ammonium sulfate 0.4 g/L, respectively. At this optimum condition, the fumaric acid concentration, yield, and volumetric productivity were 19.33 g/L, 52.8%, and 0.32 g/L/h, respectivity, after fermentation time of 60 hr.

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus was inoculated into swine tracheal organ culture. The ballooning degeneration of the tracheal ciliated epithelium and a decrease of ciliary activity from the tracheal organs infected with PRRS virus were observed one day post-infection(PI). Tracheal epithelium showed degeneration and focal necrosis 2 days PI. Epithelial necrosis and loss of cilia and epithelial cells became more severe 3 and 4 days PI. An entire loss of cilia and epithelial cells were recognized 4 days PI, however, control tracheal organs were normal during the period of the experiment except a little decrease of ciliary activities with time..

An experimental investigation was presented to determine the optimum configuration of influential parameters (concentrate volume, flow rate, temperature,initial lactate concentration, voltage, and impurities) for the best performance. AMX-CMX ion-exchange membranes were used in all experiments. Temperature was found to possess an important role in the increase of lactate recovery, and it was not increased to high values due to membrane destruction. When the higher voltage was applied to electrodialyzer, the better performance of electrodialysis was observed due to enhancement of the driving force. It was found that, to achieve an optimum operating condition,feed volume, concentrate volume, flow rate, temperature,initial lactate concentration in concentrate, and voltage should be 2 L, 1 L, 0.8 L/min, 32ºC, 1 g/L, and 15.0 V,respectively. Under these optimized conditions, 97% of lactate was successfully recovered from the fermentation broth, where the lactate flux and energy cost were 7.2 ± 0.6moles/m2/h and 0.25 kWh/kg, respectively. The results of experiments indicate that the lactic acid in the fermentation broth can be economically purified by electrodialysis.
