<P>A normally off GaN MOSFET was proposed by utilizing an extremely high 2-D electron-gas density (> 10<SUP>14</SUP> / cm<SUP>2</SUP>) at an AlGaN/GaN heterostructure as source and drain, which can be obtained by controlling the tensile stress accompanied with the growth of GaN on silicon substrate. The fabricated MOSFET with an Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> gate insulator exhibited excellent device performance, such as a threshold voltage of 2 V, drain current of 353 mA/mm, extrinsic transconductance of 98 mS/mm, and field-effect mobility of 225 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/V·s.</P>
Per3, a circadian gene, is required for Chk2 activation in human cells

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><I>PER3</I> is a member of the <I>PERIOD</I> genes, but does not play essential roles in the circadian clock. Depletion of Per3 by siRNA almost completely abolished activation of checkpoint kinase 2 (Chk2) after inducing DNA damage in human cells. In addition, Per3 physically interacted with ATM and Chk2. Per3 overexpression induced Chk2 activation in the absence of exogenous DNA damage, and this activation depended on ATM. Per3 overexpression also led to the inhibition of cell proliferation and apoptotic cell death. Marine algae (seaweed) encompass numerous groups of multicellular organisms with various shapes, sizes, and colors, and serve as important sources of natural bioactive substances. The brown alga Ecklonia cava Kjellman, an edible seaweed, contains many bioactives such as phlorotannins and fucoidans. Here, we evaluated the antioxidative, neuroprotective, and anti-apoptotic effects of E. cava extract (ECE), E. cava phlorotannin-rich extract (ECPE), and the phlorotannin dieckol on neuronal PC-12 cells. The antioxidant capacities of ECPE and ECE were 1,711.5 and 1,050.4 mg vitamin C equivalents/g in the ABTS assay and 704.0 and 474.6 mg vitamin C equivalents/g in the DPPH assay, respectively. The dieckol content of ECPE (58.99 mg/g) was approximately 60% higher than that of ECE (36.97 mg/g). Treatment of PC-12 cells with ECPE and ECE increased cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Intracellular oxidative stress in PC-12 cells due to ECPE and ECE decreased dose-independently by up to 63% and 47%, respectively, compared with the stress control (323%). ECPE reduced the production of the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and caspase-3 more effectively than ECE. Early and late apoptosis in PC-12 cells were more effectively decreased by ECPE than ECE treatments. From the results obtained in this study, we concluded that ECPE, which is rich in phlorotannins, including the marker compound dieckol, may be applied to the development of functional materials for improving cognition and memory.
건물일체형 신재생에너지 시스템의 평가를 위한 Mock-up 시설 계획설계에 관한 연구

Worldwide, the roadmap for saving building energy has been proposed. According to this tendency, research institutes of Korea are on process. In addition, applying renewable energy systems to improve the energy efficiency of buildings is urgently needed for the research. Therefore, a mock-up for renewable energy systems was built on the top floor of Architectural Engineering, Hanbat National University, Daejeon. This study proposes the integrative design process from planning for the performance of systems applied could be maximization. The form of this mock-up facility has cube shape and each face is devided as grid type. Because the BIPV system has unusual color as outer cover, the color design is considered. BIPV system has been applied 4 side as slope of 30 degree on south, horizontal, vertical south and vertical west side of facility with 2.1kW capacity. The color of window is considered for outer harmony, complementary color is applied. In case of BIST system, producted as window type and installed as first case of domestic. 9 collectors are installed in South side. In addition, to reduce the building's lighting load, dimming control sensor that works automatically with external condition and fuselage senser is installed to make the lighting load minimize. This mock-up facility is working on variety of performance assessments to applying renewable systems on the demonstration building. The evaluation of environmental performance is planned.
