Developing a thermochemical process to convert extremely low-level radioactive spent ion-exchange (IE) resins into recyclable carbon materials is an attractive goal from an economic perspective. This study investigated a noble thermochemical process, consisting of carbonization and halogenation, to convert spent IE resins into high-purity spherical carbon granules. Lowtemperature carbonization converts organic spent IE resins into spherical carbon granules with some inorganic constituents including radioactive metal species. Subsequent high-temperature halogenation treatment devolatilizes hazardous inorganic constituents in the form of halide vapors, producing high-purity carbon granules. Kinetic analysis of the carbonization process was conducted using TGAs coupled with FTIR gas analysis. Thermodynamic equilibrium model analysis was conducted to investigate the volatility characteristics of radioactive metals in the carbonized spent IE resins under the high-temperature halogenation conditions. A pilot-scale carbonization and halogenation treatment process, using mainly a graphite reactor, a plasma post-combustor, and a wet scrubber, was designed and implemented. Its performance was tested using simulated IE resins with radioactive metal surrogates such as cobalt and cesium.

Bowel ischemia is a life-threatening surgical emergency. We report a case of rapidly progressive bowel necrosis in a previously healthy child without proven mechanical small bowel obstruction. The definite diagnosis was established at the time of an exploratory operation. Of note, imaging studies and even a laparotomy did not reveal any evidence of acute appendicitis or mechanical obstruction such as intussusception or Meckel's diverticulum. During hospitalization, since we could not rule out surgical abdomen after inconclusive image findings, we closely followed the patient and repeated physical examinations carefully. Eventually surgical exploration was performed based on changes in clinical condition, which proved to be the right decision for the patient. We propose that in children with suspected strangulation of small bowel obstruction, especially when imaging findings do not provide a conclusive diagnosis, the timely exploratory surgical approach ought to be chosen based on carefully observed clinical findings and other evaluations.

<P>Intrauterine exposure to hyperglycemia is reported to confer increased metabolic risk in later life, supporting the ` developmental origins of health and disease' hypothesis. Epigenetic alterations are suggested as one of the possible underlying mechanisms. In this study, we compared pairwise DNA methylation differences between siblings whose intrauterine exposure to maternal gestational diabetes (GDM) were discordant. Methylation of peripheral blood DNA of 18 sibling pairs was measured using Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip assays. Of the 465,447 CpG sites analyzed, 12 showed differential methylation (false discovery rate < 0.15), including markers within genes associated with monogenic diabetes (HNF4A) or obesity (RREB1). The overall methylation at HNF4A showed inverse correlations with mRNA expression levels, though non significant. In a gene set enrichment analysis, metabolism and signal transduction pathways were enriched. In conclusion, we found DNA methylation markers associated with intrauterine exposure to maternal GDM, including those within genes previously implicated in diabetes or obesity.</P>

<P>Reversible surface segregation of Pt in Pt3Au/C catalysts was accomplished through a heat treatment under a CO or Ar atmosphere, which resulted in surface Pt segregation and reversed segregation, respectively. The Pt-segregated Pt3Au/C exhibited a significantly improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (227 mA/mgmetal) compared to that of commercial Pt/C (59 mA/mgmetal). For the Pt-segregated Pt3Au/C, the increased OH-repulsive properties were validated by a CO bulk oxidation analysis and also by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interestingly, the DFT calculations revealed that the binding energy for Pt-segregated Pt3Au (111) surfaces was 0.1 eV lower than that for Pt (111) surfaces, which has been previously reported to exhibit the optimum OH binding energy for the ORR. Therefore, the reversible surface segregation is expected to provide a practical way to control the surface states of Pt–Au bimetallic catalysts to enhance ORR activity. In addition, the Pt-segregated Pt3Au/C showed excellent electrochemical stability, as evidenced by its high-performance retention (96.4%) after 10 000 potential cycles, in comparison to that of Pt/C (55.3%).</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2013/jpccck.2013.117.issue-18/jp403135k/production/images/medium/jp-2013-03135k_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jp403135k'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Lead levels were measured in the maternal blood in early and late pregnancies, in cord blood at birth, and in 2-, 3-, and 5-year-old children's blood. The behavior of 575 children aged 5years were assessed using the Korean Child Behavior Checklist.
