Background and Objectives : The immunomodulatory drug thalidomide can inhibit angiogenesis and induce apoptosis in experimental models. It can also induce marked and durable response in newly diagnosed myeloma patients. Thalidomide has been used at doses ranging from 200 to 800 mg with significant toxicity. No data are available on the impact of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone as initial therapy for myeloma patients. Design and Methods : To address this issue, newly diagnosed myeloma patients were treated with 50 mg/day thalidomide continuously and cyclophosphamide 150 mg/m², days 1-4 and dexamethasone 20 mg/m², days 1-5 and day 15-19, every month. Between October 2005 and October 2006, 14 patients (median age 54.5 years) were treated with low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. Results : After a minimum of two cycles of treatment, 5 patients (55.5%) showed a partial remission. After four cycles of treatment, 10 patients (83.3%) showed a partial remission (n=6) and complete remission (n=4). After a median follow-up of 15.4 months, 1 year overall survival rate was 82.0%. Thalidomide was well tolerated without serious toxic effects. Conclusions : The combination of low-dose thalidomide, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone demonstrates favorable response rate and 1 year overall survival rate in newly diagnosed myeloma. Severe toxicities were not seen with this combination.
여대생의 아침식사 실태와 이상적 아침식사 유형을 위한 연구 : l. 아침식사 행동을 중심으로

This study was carried out to investigate breakfast behaviors of female college students. 500 questionnaires were distributed and 417 were used for statistical analysis(SAS program). This survey was conducted from June, 2000 to October, 2000. 44.7% of the respondents considered lunch to be the most important meal. 51.6% students thought that people must eat breakfast. 41.6% of the students always eat breakfast but 22.1% do not eat breakfast. Conventional type of breakfast was found to be the most popular (67.6%). But ₩400,000 monthly allowance group(P<0.05) and self prepared breakfast group preferred Western style breakfast. The main reason for eating breakfast was for health(34.6%). The group of students with less monthly allowance were more likely to skip breakfast due to lack of time (p<0.01). Physical discomforts after skipping breakfast were: lack of strength(42.5%), stomach ache(36.3%), giddiness(9.1%), and recovered temper(12.1%). In conclusion, it is needed that a convenient and nutritional education should be developed for college students' health.
수학교과 통합 진로교육이 학생들의 정의적 특성에 미치는 효과

The purpose of this study is to analyze effects of the mathematics integrated career education on students`` affective characteristics. For this purpose, 3 hours of lesson materials of the mathematics integrated career education were developed and applied to 65 students of the 10th ~11th graders selected in two high schools. After 3 hours of lessons, the following research findings are obtained. Fisrt, it is revealed from the pre-post test of 65 subjects that the mathematics integrated career education can help students improve their mathematical attitude and belief. Second, it is shown from the interview with 4 students that they became not only to recognize the usefulness and value of mathematics, but also got changed their self-concept for mathematics.

<P>Intracranial aneurysm (IA) is characterized by an abnormal bulging of one of the arteries in the brain and is heavily affected by genetic factors. Although IA is a very serious disease because of its severity and prevalence in the general public, the gene causing IA has not yet been identified due mainly to the lack of definitive genetic loci for the disease. Following a model-based family collection that recruited families from a geographically limited area that inherited IA as an autosomal dominant trait, we conducted a genome-wide linkage analysis. Significant evidence of linkage to IA was found on chromosome 8p22.2 with a maximum two-point logarithm of the odds ratio score of 3.61 under an autosomal dominant model of inheritance. The methods described in this study could be applied to localize disease-causing genes of other complex diseases through either a genome-wide linkage analysis or a genome-wide association study.</P>

<P>A new laccase gene (lac3) from the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica was induced by the presence of tannic acid, which is abundant in the bark of chestnut trees and is assumed to be one of the major barriers against pathogen infection. However, other commonly known laccase inducers, including ferulic acid, 2,5-xylidine, catechol, and pH, did not induce lac3 transcription. Moreover, the hypovirus modulated the induction of lac3 transcription, abolishing the transcriptional induction of the lac3 gene by tannic acid. A functional analysis of lac3 using a lac3-null mutant indicated that fungal growth and other morphological characteristics, including pigmentation and sporulation, were not affected. However, a virulence assay indicated that the loss of function of a tannic acid-inducible and hypoviral-regulated laccase resulted in reduced virulence without detectable changes in the morphological features. The constitutive expression of lac3 resulted in no significant differences in the necrotic lesions from those caused by the wild type, but its expression in the presence of the hypovirus led to larger lesions than those caused by the hypovirulent strain. These results suggest that the lac3 gene product may not be the only determinant of fungal virulence in chestnut trees but is an important factor.</P>

Background/Aims Patients undergoing cholecystectomy may have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). We investigated the prevalence and characteristics of SIBO in patients with intestinal symptoms following cholecystectomy. Methods Sixty-two patients following cholecystectomy, 145 with functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGIDs), and 30 healthy controls undergoing hydrogen (H2)-methane (CH4) glucose breath test (GBT) were included in the study. Before performing GBT, all patients were interrogated using bowel symptom questionnaire. The positivity to GBT indicating the presence of SIBO, gas types and bowel symptoms were surveyed. Results Post-cholecystectomy patients more often had SIBO as evidenced by a positive (+) GBT than those with FGID and controls (29/62, 46.8% vs 38/145, 26.2% vs 4/30, 13.3%, respectively; P = 0.010). In the gas types, the GBT (H2) + post-cholecystectomy patients was significantly higher than those in FGIDs patients (P = 0.017). Especially, positivity to fasting GBT (H2) among the GBT (H2)+ post-cholecystectomy patients was high, as diagnosed by elevated fasting H2 level. The GBT+ group had higher symptom scores of significance or tendency in abdominal discomfort, bloating, chest discomfort, early satiety, nausea, and tenesmus than those of the GBT negative group. The status of cholecystectomy was the only significant independent factor for predicting SIBO. Conclusions The SIBO with high levels of baseline H2 might be the important etiologic factor of upper GI symptoms for post-cholecystectomy patients. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2015;21:545-551)
Synthesis and Antifungal Activity of 2,5-Disubstituted-6-arylamino-4,7-benzimidazolediones

2,5-Disubstituted-6-arylamino-4,7-benzimidazolediones were synthesized and tested for in vitro antifungal activity against pathogenic fungi. Among them, 6-arylamino-5-chloro-2-(2-pyridyl)-4,7-benzimidazolediones exhibited potent antifungal activity against Candida specis and Aspergillus niger.
