Vol.29 No.1
Hydrodesulfurization of thiophene were studied over Co- Mo/TiO2- ZrO2 and Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. Under the experimental conditions of this study, the surface area, acidity and acid strength of TiO2- ZrO2 support were similar to those of γ-Al2O3 support. Characteristics of Co-Mo/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst were similar to that of Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst, too. Under the atmospheric pressure, thiophene conversion increased with increasing temperature over both Co-Mo/TiO2-ZrO2 and Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, and the increasing rate of thiophene conversion over Co-Mo/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst was higher than that of Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with increasing temperature.

Nowadays, more mothers tend to have a job while raising their children, often called `working moms`. The purpose of this study was to investigate what image is working moms have in picture books. For this purpose, this study selected 4 picture books that focus on working moms as a main character, 『The Weird Mom』, 『Mom! Do You Ever Think of Me at Work ?』, 『I`m Going to the Mart Today as Usual』 and 『Working Monster』. Thus, this study analyzed how working moms are depicted in the texts and illustrations of those picture books. As a result, this study found that the picture books analyzed in this study present a negative view on working moms and depict women as having role conflicts or needing help. Based on these findings, this study discusses the social influences and values of picture books related to early childhood education and suggests that a better understanding of working moms as well as continuous attention and support for them are needed.

The herpes virus can affect not only the epidermal surface but also the epithelial structures of the adnexa. Since typical signs of herpetic folliculitis such as grouped vesicles are rare, diagnosing the herpes viral infection is difficult. A 57-year-old male was presented with erythematous swelling to the occipital area with pain, itching and a burning sensation. The skin biopsy showed necrotic follicular epithelial cells and intranuclear viral inclusions, indicating a herpes infection. We diagnosed the skin lesion as herpetic folliculitis and treated it with 1000 mg of daily valaciclovir over seven days. After three days the patient’s pain had resolved, and after one week the skin lesion had clinically improved. Herein, we report a case of herpetic folliculitis on scalp and it must be considered in cases of folliculitis that are non-responsive to antibiotic.

Cutaneous aspergillosis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by Aspergillus species. Primary cutaneous aspergillosis, more commonly observed in immunocompromised patients, is caused by a direct inoculation at a site of skin injury such as that induced by surgery, burn, or trauma. A 77-year old male was presented with multiple ulcers with pain on both forearms. A month before, the patient had tattoos removed from both forearms by Nd:YAG laser treatment. An excisional biopsy showed partial necrosis of the dermal collagen accompanied by lymphohistiocytic infiltration. Periodic acid-Schiff staining showed many septate fungal hypha with dichotomous branching, which was compatible with cutaneous aspergillosis. To determine the causative organism, we used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and identified fungal Aspergillus-specific and A.fumigatus-specific DNA. The patient was given an antifungal treatment, and the lesions improved dramatically after 4 weeks of itraconazole (100 mg dose twice, daily). It is well known that tattooing has various complications, including skin infections. However, infectious complications of tattoo treatment have not been reported. Here, we reported a case of primary cutaneous aspergillosis after tattoo removal using a Nd:YAG laser to an immunocompetent patient.

Although propolis is widely used practically, little is known about the potential effects of propolis on skin cells. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the effects of propolis on cultured keratinocytes. Methods: To confirm the effect of propolis, we evaluate skin hydration and inflammation using biochemical techniques and animal models such as aquaporin3 (AQP3) expression, a channel for glycerol, in human keratinocytes and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Results: Propolis increased the expression of AQP3. Consistent with this result, propolis increased [3H]glycerol uptake in keratinocytes. However, propolis did not affect TEWL when topically applied onto the tape-stripped mouse skins. Finally, in poly(I:C) induced-innate immune response, propolis significantly decreased the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-8 and TNF-α. Conclusion: These data demonstrate that propolis has a variety of effects on epidermal keratinocytes, suggesting that it can be used as an ingredient for cosmeceuticals targeting various dermatological events.
