        A Comparison of the Style and Communicative Functionality of Two Newspaper Articles: A Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) Approach

        This paper aims to compare the general stylistic properties and communicative functionality of two news articles of a political event using a Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach. A transitivity analysis has been conducted to investigate the biases, positions and ideologies encoded in the experiential meaning of the articles. The first part of the paper briefly discusses the experiential components of the SFG framework and news article genre and introduces the two articles. The second part of the paper has attempted an analysis and findings of the texts using the SFG framework. The results of this analysis highlight the value of an SFG approach to text analysis and its application as a tool to help readers identify biases and ideological positions in news articles.

        An exploration of the mental lexicon of Korean EFL learners

        Much research in second language (L2) word association has attempted to uncover the organization and development of the L2 mental lexicon. It has been suggested that the organization of words in the mental lexicon is dependent on links that facilitate the storage and retrieval of words (Wilks & Meara, 2002). Understanding these links and their properties can provide valuable information to L2 researchers and practitioners and inform L2 acquisition theory. Studies have shown that the type of word associations made by learners may be related to their L2 proficiency (Namei, 2004; Soderman, 1993; Zareva & Wolter, 2012). This study seeks to determine the lexico-semantic patterns of Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners of different proficiency levels through a word association test. The findings of this study show that a group of low level learners had the highest proportion of syntagmatic responses while a group of L2 learners at high level had greater paradigmatic responses. In comparison to native speakers of English, both groups of Korean EFL learners had greater syntagmatic responses. This may suggest that the higher the English language proficiency of the speaker, the greater or stronger the semantic links are in the mental lexicon. The pedagogical implications of these findings are discussed and areas of further research are suggested.

        Multimodal Discourse

        The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions’ relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.

        온톨로지의 구축에서는 각 개념간의 관계의 정의가 매우 중요하며, 이를 표현하고 정의하는 많은 일련의 과정이 진행되고 있다. RDF 스키마내부에 시간관계 개념인 “before"를 정의하고 에이전트가 ”before" 시간관계를 해석 할 수 있도록 Logic정의를 시도하였다. 또한 시간개념을 사용하여 온톨로지를 구출할 때 발생할 수 있는 이점에 대해 살펴보았다.

        Is There any Role of Visceral Fat Area for Predicting Difficulty of Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer?

        Purpose: Obesity is associated with morbidity following gastric cancer surgery, but whether obesity influences morbidity after laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) remains controversial. The present study evaluated whether body mass index (BMI) and visceral fat area (VFA) predict postoperative complications. Materials and Methods: A total of 217 consecutive patients who had undergone LG for gastric cancer between May 2003 and December 2005 were included in the present study. We divided the patients into two groups ('before learning curve' and 'after learning curve') based on the learning curve effect of the surgeon. Each of these groups was sub-classified according to BMI (<$25kg/m^2$ and ${\geq}25kg/m^2$) and VFA (<$100cm^2$ and ${\geq}100cm^2$). Surgical outcomes, including operative time, quantity of blood loss, and postoperative complications, were compared between BMI and VFA subgroups. Results: The mean operative time, length of hospital stay, and complication rate were significantly higher in the before learning curve group than in the after learning curve group. In the subgroup analysis, complication rate and length of hospital stay did not differ according to BMI or VFA; however, for the before learning curve group, mean operative time and blood loss were significantly higher in the high VFA subgroup than in the low VFA subgroup (P=0.047 and P=0.028, respectively). Conclusions: VFA may be a better predictive marker than BMI for selecting candidates for LG, which may help to get a better surgical outcome for inexperienced surgeons.

      • Billroth II with Braun Enteroenterostomy Is a Good Alternative Reconstruction to Roux-en-Y Gastrojejunostomy in Laparoscopic Distal Gastrectomy

        <P><I>Background</I>. Although Billroth II (BII) reconstruction is simpler and faster than Billroth I or Roux-en-Y (RY) reconstruction in patients undergoing totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (TLDG), BII reconstruction is associated with several complications, including more severe bile reflux. BII Braun anastomosis may be a better alternative to RY reconstruction.<I> Methods</I>. This retrospective study included 56 consecutive patients who underwent TLDG for gastric cancer, followed by BII Braun or RY reconstruction, between January 2013 and December 2015. Surgical outcomes, including length of operation, quantity of blood lost, and postoperative complications, were compared in the two groups.<I> Results</I>. Clinicopathological characteristics did not differ between the BII Braun and RY groups. Mean length of operation was significantly longer in the RY than the BII Braun group (157.3 min versus 134.6 min,<I> p</I> < 0.010), but length of hospital stay, blood loss, and complication rate did not differ between the two groups. Ileus occurred in three patients (10.0%) in the RY group. Endoscopic findings 6 months after surgery showed bile reflux in seven (28%) patients in the BII Braun group and five (17.2%) in the RY group (<I>p</I> = 0.343), but no significant differences in rate of gastric residue or degree of gastritis in the remnant stomach in the two groups.<I> Conclusions</I>. B-II Braun anastomosis is a good alternative to RY reconstruction, reducing length of operation and ileus after TLDG.</P>

        Gene Expression Profiling of Acetaminophen Induced Hepatotoxicity in Mice

        Microarray analysis of gene expression has become a powerful approach for exploring the biological effects of drugs, particularly at the stage of toxicology and safety assessment. Acetaminophen (APAP) has been known to induce necrosis in liver, but the molecular mechanism involved has not been fully understood. In this study, we investigated gene expression changes of APAP using microarray technology. APAP was orally administered with a single dose of 50 mg/kg or 500 mg/kg into ICR mice and the animals were sacrificed at 6, 24 and 72 h of APAP administration. Serum biochemical markers for liver toxicity were measured to estimate the maximal toxic time and hepatic gene expression was assessed using high-density oligonucleotide microarrays capable of determining the expression profile of >30,000 well-substantiated mouse genes. Significant alterations in gene expression were noted in the liver of APAP-administered mice. The most notable changes in APAP-administered mice were the expression of genes involved in apoptosis, cell cycle, and calcium signaling pathway, cystein metabolism, glutatione metabolism, and MAPK pathway. The majority of the genes upregulated included insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1, heme oxygenase 1, metallothionein 1, S100 calcium binding protein, caspase 4, and P21. The upregulation of apoptosis and cell cycle-related genes were paralleled to response to APAP. Most of the affected gene expressions were returned to control levels after 72 hr. In conclusion, we identified potential hepatotoxicity makers, and these expressions profiling lead to a better understanding of the molecular basis of APAP-induced hapatotoxicity.

        To investigate the possible enhancement of genotoxicity in stress environment, we examined the effect of genotoxic material in oxidative stress-induced condition using human cell line. Human lymphoblast cell line, TK6 was treated with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) for induction of oxidative stress, and treated with N’-methyl-N’-nitroguanidine (MNNG), as a genetoxic material. We carried out MTS assay to set treatment doses. TK6 was treated with H₂O₂ as 6.75 (low dose) or 13.5 μM (high dose) for 2 h, and treated with MNNG as 0.117 (low dose), 0.234 (middle dose), 0.468 μM (high dose) for 2 h. As results, a treatment of MNNG induced DNA damage as dose dependently. And TK6 treated with H₂O₂ at low as well as high dose followed by MNNG treatment showed higher DNA damage compared to MNNG alone treated groups. Malondialdehyde, as a marker of lipid peroxidation was increased in H₂O₂ and MNNG treated groups. Real-time RT-PCR analyses for expression sion of several antioxidative enzymes showed that catalase mRNA and glutathione peroxidase 1 mRNA expression were decreased in H₂O₂ and MNNG treated groups. Taken together, we conclude that genotoxicity induced by MNNG is enhanced in a condition of oxidative stress induced by H₂O₂ and it suggests that it should be associated with induction of lipid peroxidation and decrease of antioxidant enzymes.

        The passive type solar energy heating system for the classroom was investigated. A classroom in a primary school located at Gangnam-ku, Seoul was taken as a model classroom the heat balance equation was established. The temperature in the classroom and solarium were calculated from the heat balance. at clear days, the temperature in the classroom and solarium were measured and compared with the calculated values. The calculated and measured values for the temperature agreed with, in general, in the increasing of $20\%$ range. It was found that the smaller size of solarium could Provide the increasing of energy efficiency for the classroom temperature.

        Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is the most commonly used phthalate ester in polyvinyl chloride formulations including food packing and storage of human blood. DEHP is a well known as non-genotoxic carcinogen and endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC). DEHP have shown all negative results in ICH-guildeline recommended standard genotoxicity test battery. In this study, to assess the clastogenic and DNA damaging effect in human-derived tissue specific cells, DEHP was treated in human derived MCF-7 cells, HepG2 cells, LNCap cells, BeWo cells, MCF-10A cells, and female peripheral blood cells using micronucleus assay and in human<br/> breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells up to 1.28×10-²M using Comet assay. The in vitro micronucleus assay is a mutagenicity test system for the detection of chemicals which induce the formation of small membrane bound DNA fragment i.e. micronuclei in the cytoplasm of interphase cells, originated from clastogenic and/or aneugenic<br/> mechanism. The single cell gel electrophoresis assay (Comet assay) is used to detect DNA strand-breaks and alkaline labile site. In our results, DEHP increased significantly and/or dose-depentently and time-dependently micronucleus frequency at the 6 and 24 hr without metabolic activation system only in MCF-7 cells. DEHP treated with 2 hrs in MCF-7 cells using Comet assay induced DNA damage dose-depentantly.
