Purpose: To report upon two cases of anterior capsule opacification (ACO) proliferating into the pupillary region of the anterior surface of a single piece acrylic AcrySof? intraocular lens (IOL) (SA60AT, Alcon Laboratories, Inc., USA). The surgical removal of the ACO was also reported. Methods: An 80-year-old woman and a 75-year-old woman underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of a single piece foldable AcrySof? IOL in the posterior capsular bag. ACO proliferating from the opposite sides of the IOL along the central axis were found three months after surgery. To recover visual acuity in the 80-year-old woman`s eye, ACO was surgically removed with a Sinskey hook and irrigation and aspiration system. Results: The patient`s visual acuity was recovered after surgical removal of the ACO. Histopathologic findings of the removed tissues revealed fibroblastic proliferation of lens epithelial cells. The ACO in 75-year-old woman`s eye was not treated, as it was not associated with a visual disturbance. Conclusions: In eyes containing an AcrySof? IOL, clinically significant ACO proliferation into the pupillary region along the central axis can occur. Surgical removal can be beneficial for recovery of visual acuity.

Unexpected antibody Screening is essential for transfusion practice to prevent hemolytic transfusion reaction. So it is very important to maintain high sensitivity in unexpected antibody screening test. We analyzed the detection limits of anti - D antibody in various test and sample condition to estimate the influence of factors on the sensitivity ofunexpected antibody screening test. Regardless of washing procedure, the diluted anti - D antibody with normal saline were detected with same sensitivity by microplate method. In the detection of the diluted anti-D antibody in serum by microplate method, omittion of washing procedure made the sensitivity low. With column agglutination method, the detection sensitivity of the diluted anti-D antibody in serum was higher than that in saline. In conc1usion, the neutralization of anti - human globulin have major influence on the sensitivity of antibody detection by microplate method. But the factor having major influence on the sensitivity of column agglutination method is the other one than the neutralization of anti-human globulin.
Developmental and acute toxicity of cetylpyridinium chloride in Bombina orientalis (Amphibia: Anura)

<P>In an effort to evaluate the toxicity of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a cationic surfactant in amphibians, we examined the developmental and acute toxicity of CPC in Bombina orientalis embryos and tadpoles. Embryonic exposure to 2.0 mu M (0.72 mg/l) CPC for 7 days significantly decreased the survival rates and increased DNA damage in the intestine of developed tadpoles. Exposure to 1.5 mu M (0.54 mg/l) CPC significantly decreased the growth of embryos and increased developmental abnormalities. The 168-h LC50 and EC50 values of CPC were 1.95 mu M (0.697 mg/l) and 1.48 mu M (0.531 mg/l) in embryos, respectively. In an extended acute toxicity test using tadpoles, the 168-h LC50 value of CPC was 5.07 mu M (1.82 mg/l). In terms of survival and growth rates, the lowest observed effective concentration of CPC was 1.5 mu M. At sub-lethal concentrations (1.0 and 2.0 mu M) CPC treatment to embryos increased lipid peroxidation in the intestine and gills of developed tadpoles, indicating that CPC can impose oxidative stress. At 2.0 mu M CPC, pro-apoptotic Bax and Bak mRNA levels were significantly increased together with DNA fragmentation, indicative of apoptotic cell death. 우리나라의 차량 범죄률은 국민들의 소득 증가와 더불어 계속해서 증가 중인 추세이다. 현재 상용화된 차량 번호판 인식은 시스템은 특정 위치에 고정되어 있고, 화면의 특정 영역에 물체가 들어와야만 번호판을 인식할 수 있다. 단순히 그 영역에 들어오지 못하면 번호판을 인식하지 못하고 지나치게 된다. 본 연구는 특정 영역에 구애받지 않고 장소, 화면 어디에서든 차량 번호판을 인식할 수 있게 딥러닝 기술을 응용하여 범죄차량을 찾아내는 기법을 제안한다. 또한 서버와 연동시켜 실시간으로 범죄차량의 위치를 파악, 주변 경찰들에게 연락을 주어 빠르게 범죄차량을 검거하는 서비스를 제공한다.

The developmental toxicity of nickel was examined in the embryos of Bombina orientalis, a common amphibian in Korea. Based on a standard frog embryo teratogenesis assay, the LC<SUB>50</SUB> and EC<SUB>50</SUB> for malformation of nickel after 168h of treatment were 33.8μM and 5.4μM, respectively. At a lethal concentration (100μM), nickel treatment decreased the space between gill filaments and caused epithelial swelling and abnormal fusion of gill filaments. These findings suggest that nickel affects the functional development of gills, leading to embryonic death. At sublethal concentrations (1-10μM), nickel produced multiple embryonic abnormalities, including bent tail and tail dysplasia. At 10μM, nickel significantly decreased tail length and tail muscle fiber density in tadpoles, indicating inhibition of myogenic differentiation. Before hatching, the pre-muscular response to muscular response stages (stages 26-31) were the most sensitive period to nickel with respect to tail muscle development. During these stages, MyoD mRNA was upregulated, whereas myogenic regulatory factor 4 mRNA was downregulated by 0.1μM nickel. Calcium-dependent kinase activities in muscular response stage embryos were significantly decreased by nickel, whereas these activities were restored by exogenous calcium. In tadpoles, 10μM nickel significantly decreased the expression of the myosin heavy chain and the 12/101 muscle marker protein in the tail. Expression was restored by exogenous calcium. Our results indicate that nickel affects muscle development by disrupting calcium-dependent myogenesis in developing B. orientalis embryos.

본 증례는 산모의 혈청 속에 존재하는 항-C+e 항체 중 IgG type의 항-C 항체만 태반을 통과하여 발생된 신생아 용혈성 질환으로 산모 혈청 속에 존재하는 항-C의 항체역가는 1:256, 신생아는 1:32를 보였으며 IgM type의 항-e는 산모의 혈청에서만 1:2048의 높은 항체역가를 보였다. 따라서 신생아의 혈청 혈액형 검사가 AHG phase에서 A 혹은 B 혈구에 응집 반응이 일어났다면 동종항체에 의한 응집 반응인지 IgG type의 항-A 혹은 B 항체에 의한 것인지를 구별해야 할 것이며, 이를 위해서는 산모 및 신생아의 항체 선별검사 및 신생아의 ABO 혈구형 검사와 혈청 혈액형 검사가 AHG phase까지 반드시 실시되어야 할 것이다. We describe a case of hemolytic disease of newborn due to anti-C derived from mother who have anti-C+e The titer of anti-C was 1:256 in mother`s serum and 1:32 in serum of nenonate suffering hemolytic disease of newborn. The titer of anti-e was 1:2048 found only in mother`s serum. Because it was IgM antibody, it could not cross the placenta. In order to confirm causative antibody and make a plan for safe transfusion in case of hemolytic disease of newborn, we must investigate the blood group antibody status of both mother and neonate including immunoglobulin types of antibody such as IgG and IgM

Background/Aims: The signal transducer and activator of the transcription (Stat)-family of proteins are cytoplasmic transcription factors that transmit signals from cytokines and growth-factor receptors to the nucleus. Stat proteins, especially Stat3 and Stat5, are constitutively activated in various solid tumors and hematological malignancies. However, the role of Stat3 signaling in gastric carcinoma has not yet been fully determined. This study was conducted to investigate the climical value of STAT3 and STAT5 expression in gastric carcinoma. Methods: Expression of STAT3 and STAT5 was extimated by 100 resected gastric cancer cases. We evaluated the relationships between expressions of STAT3 or STAT5 and various clinicopathological factors, including stage and, overall survival. Results: Compared with normal gastric epithelial cell line, elevated activities of STAT3 and STAT5 were found in human gastric cancer cell lines. The expressive intensity of phospho-Stat3 protein was significantly increased in patients with higher TNM stage. Furthermore, the expressive intensity of phospho-Stat3 was correlated with poor survival rate. However, there was no correlation between Stat5 and clinicopathological paramenters. Conclusions: These results suggest that STAT3 may play an important role in the tumorigenesis of gastric adenocarcinoma, and it`s expression in tissue is good indicator for poor prognosis of gastric cancer. STAT3 deserves further investigation for treatment of gastric cancer.
